2024 Creative Writing MFA Applicants Forum

I know someone who took some classes there years ago, they said it was fine, she went on to emerson. as far as the others being open admission rip off schools, no. just no. I won't get in to how good or why but they're among the finest educational institutions in the world. anyone who even suggests nyu or columbia are diploma mills should be asked where they were on january 6. but know, don't pay for an mfa. see below all this. and more to the point of art not being about making money, it shouldn't be about starving in debt either. no output is guaranteed, but an mfa as a financial investment is on the low scale - at best. a significant number of people want the paid program, not for the letters or the agent or the job after. For them, it's about nothing more than the room of one's own. and as an artist, what more could you ask? -

I'd like to think it means they've narrowed down the list enough to bother checking our social media. on 2/29 they searched me. -

This is a wonderful problem to have. Be sure to triple check cost of living, ask about campus housing, local transportation, and travel home. talk to current students as well as the school. and enjoy every fucking minute of it. -

ooooohh. tell us everything. It's a good question for the Draft vets. The only way to know is if one has done it - been rejected after an interview. even then it would be hard to be certain. -

I feel you. The waiting is rough. when Virginia sent out the unofficial rejection I was so appreciative. It takes so little to be considerate of our time to say nothing of our health. If we all get snail mail rejections form the iww over the next week, that's fine, i bet it. but these institutions that wait weeks after the decisions are made are simply disrespectful. Then there are those that say they're going to make an offer but don't... -

that's ironic. a lot of my spam/scam numbers come from Nevada. Irvine called me from a Reno number. I almost ignored it but something told me not to. And if you missed it, FAU called me from an Iowa City number. -

DUDE! sorry about the wheels. and you're right, super irrational. as long as you're looking at things super irrationally, aren't all these things just as likely to indicate something good is going to happen? -

no, this is exactly true. and it's true for anywhere i guess. not the overlooked part. there are programs with such tiny cohorts i don't see how you could be missed. no, finding the right fit is more important that the rep of the school. I'd love to figure out how to do that. -

i think i post too much. anyway, i've told everyone here to play to the buzzer. I have an acceptance and a good one and I'm pretty sure it's where I'm going, nevertheless, I'm here till the end. You've all been supportive and inspiring and I'm not giving up on anyone. I'm throwing some thoughts into a document and I'll post it towards the end of the cycle for anyone applying next year. I've learned a lot and would do some things differently and I want to pass it on. I can't promise to help anyone get an acceptance but I'm certain it will help someone handle the journey more effectively. Anything anyone thinks i should address? Questions or things you've learned? no one is behind. I'm 49 forty fucking nine. I drank most of my life and believed i had wasted it. one of my recommenders (who has absolutely no time for bullshit) said it was all part of what got me here. nothing is a waste. I don't know about you, but i'm a better writer just for all the work i did on my essays. jesus it was a lot of writing and under pressure and in a short time. You are all better than you were yesterday. an athlete or a laborer or even a surgeon has a limited time to peak. We have a lot more. just don't stop. hell, you can even take off a cycle, but do not stop writing. and do not ruin the process by making it about something else. -

Yes. But there are programs who distribute funding unequally and some of those may give an offer of an enhanced package which includes a stipend unattached to educational duties. -

If rejections go out, I'm sure you'll know. If your mail is being looked after, ask if your mail picker upper sees something from the cornfields. -

getting accepted gives you exactly zero insight into these questions so no worries. Honestly, i'm on the NWP waitlist and vs Irvine the ONLY thing I can think of right now is reputation. If I were fortunate enough to get an offer, I'd have numbers to think about. That said, I'm about the work and I don't really see NWP giving me more support than Irvine, but that too might change with a phone call. Here's another thing I wonder about: Why would they not the Michener waitlist from NWP. I know it's logistically difficult but imagine establishing the Michener cohort and then the NWP. i dunno, i'm just listening to my daughter play the worst music ever and spitballing. we're going on a bear hunt we're going on a bear hunt
