Calling 2011 Applicants: The Decision Thread!!!
new mexico replied to new mexico's topic in Religion
Well, now i'm not quite sure what i'll do. Although I have a full tuition + stipend at Boston University STH for the M.Div., I was accepted to a program at Brown University that's extremely tempting and, in the long run, could open many more doors for me. Unfortunately, it's a professional program at Brown, so it will cost quite a bit in terms of loans (even with the scholarship I received). Also, I'm somewhat turned "off" by theology, generally speaking. EDITED (appropriate, but I will probably use that in an email he he) The plot thickens, and I need to do some serious prayer concerning my decision. Drats. -
hopefully, the extended wait will bring great news!

Trin, I'm lovin' the positive attitude!!! don't lose hope, and keep up the good work!!! So you're definitely going to HDS? Maybe we can take a class together through the BTI!!! (I'll be at BU STH most likely.)

Hey Everyone, Well, the 2011 Theology Applicant thread has been a great success, and hopefully more people will be posting in it for the schools that still have yet to notify prospective applicants. So, I've decided to start a new thread for those of us who have been accepted to various programs (M.Div., M.T.S., M.A., Th.D., Ph.D., etc etc) and are in the process of deciding where to attend. I'm hoping this topic will be useful for those of us deciding which school to attend, and to see where other gradcafe members will be attending as well. I hope we will be able to ask one another questions and bounce ideas off of one another. So, I'll start. Right now, I'm heavily leaning towards attending Boston University School of Theology for the M.Div. I received a full ride w/ a stipend. I love the program (the revised curriculum allows me to pursue my research interests), the people, and, although i haven't been to Boston, my brother tells me it's awesome (he's a student there in pure math) and that i'll love it. I turned down Leadership Candler @ Emory for the M.Div. primarily because it doesn't have the kind of flexibility BU offers; however, it's an amazing program and the people there were super helpful and kind throughout the entire admissions process. I'm just waiting on University of Oxford. I've been admitted to the M.Phil. in Social Anthropology, and i'm waiting on the college decision and the scholarship I applied for. So, I'll be able to make a decision in two weeks. To make a long story short, I'm 99.999% heading to Boston U.

Just use Kaplan's Math Review book to study for that section of the GRE. I used it, and it made the quantitative section incredibly easy. Anyway, I didn't apply to Harvard (though I might for the ThD) because I wasn't interested in it for the M.Div. I'm sorry to those that weren't accepted. The admissions process is, to put it simply, not fair. Don't give up hope! And, more importantly, remember that Harvard is not the be-all and end-all of education. I'm sure Harvard probably receives numerous applications in which the applicant obviously just wants to get a degree from Harvard even though he / she may not be a great fit, and I'm sure this is why many people are probably rejected. I have some friends that applied to HDS for philosophical and historical theology, which makes no sense to me at all. I can understand applying to University of Oxford, St. Louis University, Wheaton College, and other schools for the aforementioned subfields, but I don't think, at least from all that I've heard, that HDS is strong in these fields. Perhaps this is why they were rejected. Don't lose hope!!

Not sure if this helps, but I was accepted into the BU STH and received full funding, but I have yet to receive the official notification in the mail. From what I know, if you haven't received anything in the mail yet, don't worry about it....it is not indicative of a decision of either yes or no.
-
still waiting on my college decision from Oxford....Un-freaking believable. Well, if I don't receive substantial funding from Oxford, then I'm heading off to study theology (theologies of liberation in the context of a medical anthropology is what I'm interested in), which I'm actually excited about. Hopefully, Oxford will be notifying soon about colleges and the scholarship. hard to sleep at the moment.
-
Nice! I'm going to try to attend.
-
i'm also sorry for those that did not receive adequate funding. i pray that petitions go well. please keep us posted.
-
i found out BU via phone, and they sent out merit scholar awards on monday, i belive, via email. i got mine on Monday. i was told that the BU mail takes a while too.
-
Geez!!! AWESOME!!!! So, will you be going to Harvard????!
-
i'm sorry where will you be attending?
-
Check it!!!!!!!!!
-
WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PM me if you want a roommate Congrats!!! what a great acceptance!!! NO!!!!
-
hopefully, Phenomenologist is a recipient of the scholarship as well. I believe Phenomenologist received a phone call from Yale that he missed.
-
Wow!!! CONGRATS!!!! that's basically the exact same funding I got for the M.Div. at Boston U! Wahoo!!! Alright, so if it's between Vandy, Yale, and Harvard, and funding is similar, which one will you attend?
-
hopefully you're in!!! call back!!!!
-
it's 4:15pm east coast time. i'm hoping they send out notifications by today for everyone....i'm not sure many of you, understandably, will want to wait till Monday or Tuesday next week.
-
Do not contact your school because you are antsy

Exactly!!! No harm in calling. Just don't do it everyday. Give it a week or so between calls. -
Well, it looks like i'll be moving from New Mexico to Boston sometime later this summer. I'm not looking forward to the housing situation
-
LOL! i understand!! i'm really hoping you get into HDS!
-
Is anyone going to BU for the merit scholar day? it's the 29th to the 30th. it's not mandatory to attend, but I think if I can conjure up $200 i'll go (they only reimburse up to $150 for the flight, but hotel / food is free). also, if anyone is going to be attending BU, BC, or HDS and does not want to live on campus and, instead, live with other theology students off campus, please PM me!!!! I'm interested
-
ugh! i didn't even apply to YDS or HDS and i can't even get my hw done since i'm so excited for everyone! i'll stay on here for a bit longer. good luck, everyone!

grad school rejection = best thing ever?
new mexico replied to EscapedMonkey's topic in Waiting it Out
Agreed. Very poor research. It sounds like someone that's whining.
