  1. Addendum: this is just what I did, so YMMV. also, i'm sure others have much better advice than I -- especially those that got into doctoral programs . all the best, NM
  2. I'm in the 2nd round right now. I applied to 9 programs last year (PhD), and I was rejected by all 9. I was, however, accepted to a med anthro master's program and a neuroscience program; however, I decided to try again. For this application cycle, I contacted a number of professors at different schools about four months prior to applying. This helped a lot because it gave me an idea as to which schools I may have an actual chance with. Also, I made sure to cast my net widely this admissions cycle -- i.e., I applied to phd programs (anthropology), public health programs (mph), and divinity programs (mdiv, with the intent on then studying political / liberation and practical theology). I really worked on rewriting my personal statement. If the emails I sent to the professors received a favorable response, then I made sure to incorporate some part of that email into my personal statement. And, so far, it's worked. I was accepted to Emory (mdiv, full funding), Brown (mph, w/ scholarship), Columbia (mph, w/scholarship), and Oxford (mphil anthropology, waiting on funding). I hope to get accepted to UNM (phd anthropology) and Boston U (mdiv). I also applied to WashU (phd anthropology), and I hope to get accepted, but I know it is more desirable to get into. Also, it depends what you want to do w/ your degree. Whatever direction I take, I will eventually attend medical school. I wish to use both an academic and medical degree to help ameliorate the suffering of the disenfranchised and poor in New Mexico. So like I said, if for some reason you don't get accepted anywhere for graduate school, sit down and reevaluate what you want to do and what you can do to get there next year! Please feel free to PM me with any questions!! All the best, NM
  3. duplicate
  4. Archaeology and EvoAnthro decisions have already been made at UNM, but cultural anthro decisions will be made today! i'm nervous!
  5. i was accepted to the mph in sociomedical sciences -- Social Science Research in Public Health. w/ a scholarship, but it's still expensive.
  6. Congrats to those accepted to and wait-listed at Princeton!
  7. I hope today is your day, persiandoc!!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you -- hopefully Princeton, NYU, and Yale notify you sooner rather than later!
  8. I'm hoping, wherever I go, to be md/phd status before i start doing field work. My schools aren't notifying till next week. *Crosses fingers* So, what is everyone doing to pass the time? Physics and biochemistry are taking up a lot of my time, and I'm running a few days a week to help alleviate some of the stress. Anyone else have courses, work, or fun activities?
  9. I don't care about rankings. I'm interested in attending a grad program where the professors are laid back and want what's best for the students -- that is, i'm interested in schools where the professors aren't creating "mini-me's," so to speak.
  10. persiandoc, it's going to be OK! you're going to get in somewhere!
  11. Geez, this is so exciting. I love how we're all keeping each other up-to-date. Well, New Mexico and WashU should be notifying applicants next week (at least that's what I've been told) for anthropology.
  12. Well, these are exciting times .
  13. one more week till BU? *crosses fingers*
  14. so, we'll hear back in April?
  15. In your signature it says you applied to BU. For some reason I thought you weren't applying there. That's great though!! That's my top choice right now. I wish it was next week or the week after. I don't think we'll know till the last week of Feb or first week of March
  16. Congrats on the acceptance to ANTS. I hope to hear from BU soon. Maybe we'll take some classes together through BTI. Good luck with Harvard!

    MDIV/JD

i completely agree. as long as Presby knows exactly why he / she wants to do it, I say go for it. Presby can get a killer teaching job with an JD/Mdiv. I know a few relatives that have such degrees, and they teach ethics at law schools, med schools, and graduate programs. As baylor2011 mentions, there's plenty of opportunities available in social justice issues, advocacy, urban poverty, teaching, and much more. however, and to reiterate, you still want to go to a decent law school.
  18. Any word from WashU?
  19. it's good to get confirmation. i didn't apply, but i appreciate that everyone is willing to share results.
  20. I'll be turning down the offer from Candler (and Leadership Candler) in a few minutes via email. I hope they invite one of you that applied; at the very least, this frees up scholarship space for someone.

    MDIV/JD

You've received some great advice so far! If you really want to do a JD/Mdiv, do it! I suggest, however, that you have a solid reason for wanting to do both degrees. As others have mentioned, the market is currently saturated for JD's, and if you want to be a lawyer, you REALLY need to go to a phenomenal school. Unlike medical school, where one graduates from law school is extremely important. If it helps, I plan to apply to medical school sometime during my MDiv (or Phd or MPH...not sure what program i'll choose yet) or sometime directly after. Go for it
  22. Take everything result in the results section with a grain of salt unless there's multiple posts. I'm still waiting on a few schools, but i have a few acceptances too
  23. BU, i'm told, does not notify until the last week of Feb / first week of march with financial aid notifications sent out two weeks later.
  24. I'm sorry i'm not following, though....they sent out a mass email for those that didn't get the invite? please explain.... also, you sound like a great applicant, so i bet HDS or YDS will accept you!!!
  25. i'm not methodist either
