Ha! Mine isn't funded but to me, NY is a better choice than SD as I've always been a Northern California girl

Dream School, No Funding ... Where to look for fellowships?
cheshirey replied to explodingstressball's topic in The Bank
I agree. I'm only going for mine because it's an MA and I'm pretty positive I'll be a more competitive applicant for PhD funding after I go to this school -
I'm in the same boat but mines only a year. I'm going for it I think though, only because I don't think it'll be worth my time to apply again next year (for me anyway). But those suggestions are really good about working on campus

yeah seriously. i start in june (if i go) so i am thinking ill do the campus housing for the first three months, which will round out to bout that..eek

I am heading to NY from liberal San Francisco and I've got myself a few small-ish tats and a lip piercing. The first school I'm visiting is an art school I'm already accepted to, so I'm not worried but should I take out my lip ring to visit a history program I'm still applying to? Keep in mind I really don't want to. And everyone is telling me I don't need to but they're all from San Francisco too so I'm sure they're opinions are skewed.

I don't know, I guess it depends on the packet. I didn't get any funding, which I expected but I'm still a bit shocked I even got in...this was a bit of a stretch for me. I'm visiting the school (and a couple others) in a couple weeks and that will help me decide. But in case you're wondering, I got an email back from Noel Rodriguez yesterday saying that they're having technical problems with their email system and they are supposed to go out today...although its almost 8 pm there...

as a twenty something who dresses up every day for her federal government job, i say yes to the slacks and sweater but depending on the school, show your personality a bit. dont go overboard with the quirks of course but remember its important to separate yourself in a good way

The M.A. program...Has anyone gotten the email packet yet?

Hello! I have two more apps due April 1 (seriously who does that), both for American Studies. One is my first choice. My interest in American Studies is Hip-Hop and specifically its relation to American youth and morality. Here's the thing. For my other apps (different programs) I used a Nietzsche quote but here it doesn't fit. Since I am primarily interested in hip-hop and these are MA programs I want to use a rap lyric that is relevant to my purpose. It's not profane or anything and its a rapper with some credibility. Is this a terrible idea?

If you're only in Las Vegas, I would say bring the car. Berkeley isn't too tough to find parking...at least in comparison to San Francisco. But the person above me is right, the bay area has a lot of public transportation programs that are usually sufficient to get around

I'm re-writing a sop for an American Studies program due in April. I have time, I know, but I want to get it over with. Focus is 20th cent American pop music. Help meeee!!!

hahahaha. i like this blog because when i start feeling like im going crazy with all of the ridiculous steps to applying and the constant worrying and anxiety in real life (still havent heard from any schools and i still have 2 apps due) i can come here and be among my fellow crazies. nobody else really understands.

American Studies, 1850-present, particularly on sociomusicology of popular music and other pop culture in the media.

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application

Haha thanks, I didn't make it up, but it seems appropriate for this forum -

"Hmm, interesting musical training, good grades in theory classes and great undergrad thesis paper...oh! and great GRE scores. Oh, but look at this GPA..." "Yes, yes I agree...it's quite a disappointment indeed." "But she has quite a bit of experience in the industry." "It's not enough! To the garbage bin with it! She is a Comm student, not a music student!" -
Anyone feeling his or her application was a diaster as I am now?

I know exactly how all this feels and it's good to know I am not alone! -
Any Theatre/Drama/Performance Studies People Out There?
cheshirey replied to ViridianMambo's topic in Waiting it Out
I applied to Tisch's Performance Studies program and I may apply to UC Davis' too (its due in May. MAY.) I tried to get in touch with a professor but he literally was booked on phone appointments. Not counting on that school haha. -
Are late deadlines killing you too?
cheshirey replied to lab ratta-tat-tat's topic in Waiting it Out
i actually have 2 deadlines April 1st! Maybe thats just M.A. Music programs -
thanks guys and i'm glad i'm not alone. my focus right now (as i guess would be for my MA thesis) is American sociomusicology based on the framework of Jacques Attali's Noise and any relations to Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy. In other words, very interdisciplinary stuff. Thanks for your help everyone!

I'm coming from a California State U with a BA in Communication Studies with a minor in Music (if it helps, i have way over the amount needed for a minor). I've been working in the Music industry for 3 years or so (at a record label, then a concert venue and now at a CBS top 40 radio station in San Francisco) and have had private training in voice and piano. My GRE scores were pretty great for Humanities and my GPA is ok. I recently met with a professor at my dream school nearby. I proposed my idea for my thesis (which is based on music, philosophy and sociology) and she seemed very receptive. She asked me about my musical background and how I made my major focus toward music, which I gladly told her. Later on I met with the dean of the music department at my school about my minor who, when i told I was applying to music schools for graduate study, exclaimed "Without a BA in Music? Good luck." Now I'm freaking out. Am I totally screwing myself here by applying to music?
