  1. ha yes Harvards extensive financial aid application WAS over the top ... of course I didn't qualify for anything. Do you know if the admissions committee looks at that before accepting you? Or is it processed by a completely different department??
  2. its cruel and unusual punishment to make people wait this long for a life-changing decision!

  3. so glad you started this thread.... last time I read the Linguistics forums, I got so depressed. Before, I had this hope that one or two schools would see the potential in me, & want to 'be part of my development & success' (thanks bhikhaari), but after reading how qualified everyone was & the experience theyve had I was SO down on myself.. it was like, who're you fooling???
  4. Alyanumbers, I see you're applying to Univ of Edinburgh .. for what semester are you applying?? I'm going to apply for Fall 2011!!
  5. So, I sent in all of my applications over a month ago. I was perfectly happy with them, until I realized the other day that I didn't mention my blog in any of them. I have an academic blog that's related to my field, & I'm thinking it would've been nice to give the address to the adcom, if they're interested in seeing some of my recent work (especially since the writing sample I sent in is completely unrelated to my field, since my Master's thesis (which is more relevant) is nowhere near ready for submission). Is it possible to send a 'heads up' email to the adcom, letting them know I have this blog, that if they're interested they can see some of my 'language-related' work? Or should I just wait, see if I get any interviews, then mention it then? I'm really torn between these two options. On the other hand, I'm afraid my lack of a relevant writing sample will hurt me, too.....
  6. in terms of best, I'd like to nominate Yale ... it was easy, had a user-friendly menu on the left-hand side, asked the right amount of questions, only requested scanned transcripts, and because of how easy it was, was one of the first apps I finished.
  7. "who does this girl think she is??!!"
  8. That is .. a fabulous quote. I had the same philosophy .... first, I couldn't afford to apply to a bunch of schools, and second, I only want to spend my time & money at a place that I feel is truly worth it. If I'm not accepted to any (which is a huge possibility), I'll apply to programs that I like in Europe. Truth is, I'm on the fence about moving back to the States & I think my being accepted or not will be Fate telling me what's the best move.
  9. ...wow....
  10. congrats laurend!!!
  11. (stands) hi, I'm ZouZax, and I'm a gradCafe addict. Come February I expect to be a quite severe application-checking addict, so let's get that out of the way now. (sits)
  12. i second the vote for Stanford & its inability to click on the page you want. Of course, I uploaded my statement of purpose, transcripts, and writing sample last .. AND at different times ... and quite unfortunately, these three things just happened to be on page 15 (or was it 13?) doesn't matter, all I know is that every time I wanted to edit one of those I was incessantly clicking, trying to get to the right page. I also agree with the vote for MIT's stark application. It made me feel ... lonely.

    omg, y'all

it's so great to read that other people are freaking out like me (I know i shouldnt be pleased by other people's stress, but it IS comforting). All I do is think about my applications, whether someone at some school has taken a peek at mine yet, what are they thinking, is there a huge mistake??? Some days I think, who are you fooling, you're not going to be accepted anywhere .... and some days I'm feeling really positive, and thinking, wooooo you'll definitely be accepted to ONE of them!! For sure!! One of them has to be fooled into accepting you lol. I'm already having total Imposter Syndrome .... which I didn't even know was a term until I joined this forum, and I'm SO glad there's a term for it because I thought it was just called Crazy. I really just need to KNOW already!! I wish it were February ((
  14. Great news!! My profs submitted the rest of my LORs and now I'm officially done with all of my applications!! There's hope for you, too!
  15. Im applying to Linguistics this year as well! Have a B.S (honors).in Psychology from a large, private university, where I actually focused on Neuroscience but, because I wanted to graduate a year early, left with a Psychology degree in 2004. Dabbled in various languages & am now pursuing a Masters in Translation Theory in Istanbul, where I'm focusing on Psycho and Neurolinguistics for my thesis. Undergrad GPA (Overall): 3.89. Grad GPA (so far): 3.83. Speak/read 7 languages (I say read as one of them is Ancient Greek, can't do much speaking there). GRE score: 640V, 780Q, 4.5W (unfortunately). Teach ESL as well, and have translated a few books from Turkish to English. Am very worried about my chances of being accepted, as I don't have a traditional linguistics background, my thesis is nowhere near completion so I had to settle with sending my undergraduate honors thesis (psychology) and a current bibliography for my master's thesis as writing samples Some schools I applied to: NYU, Brown, MIT, Yale. Only applied to 'dream'/'reach' schools as its really expensive to apply, as you guys know, and I could only afford to apply to a few (max 6). Want to concentrate on Psycho and/or Neurolinguistics for my Ph.D. Let's see! Can't wait to hear everyone's results!
  16. is it decision time yet?

  17. sent my applications in a month ago, waiting for one prof to send a LOR to 4 of the schools, inexplicably he sent 2 letters electronically about 3 weeks ago and then lost his enthusiasm, claimed he would do it last week but I'm still waiting ... so frustrating! feeling really negative, am convinced I wont be accepted anywhere. already thinking of ways to improve my application for next year.... wish I could sleep until february!! the suspense is the worst!!
  18. Finished my applications, applied to 6 Ph.D programs in the States, and will probably apply to a few in Europe (France, maybe Germany) if I'm not accepted. Only applied to 'dream' schools. Need a school that can offer full-funding. Would have liked to apply to 2-3 more but it got WAY too expensive. Cost me 100$ just to FedEx 3 transcripts. Thankfully the other schools used scanning uploads or I wouldve had to take another school off the list haha. Now of course I'm convinced Ive made some HUGE, GLARING mistake on all of my applications that will cause me to be immediately rejected.
