And this is what happens when I have a job where I'm allowed access to the intertubes all day long.
-
Congratulations. Think how much money you'll save in grad school by not having to buy cigarettes!
-
Hey, that's a great way to look at it. If I hear from all my schools in February it'll be one school every 2.88 days. Unfortunately, it's far more likely I'll hear from all nine of them on March 31.
-
Oh, crap. I picked the highest option, but I didn't even remember to mentally factor in the money I spent on a roadtrip to visit six of my potential schools.
-
Ah, thanks a lot. Linguistics is actually the only subfield I don't do, but this sounds so interesting that I'm going to pick it up.

I had a text document where I kept lists of what documents were required for every program, mailing addresses, contacts, due dates, etc. I didn't bother with crime stats because I live in an extremely crime-filled metropolitan area right now, so anything is going to be an improvement, and I didn't apply to anywhere with weather that I won't enjoy.

Well, at least educational loan deferment exists. So there's that. That's a small load off my mind, at least. March is in 27 days!

Oh, sweet minty jesus. >_<; I better have something to show for this! *shakes fist*

My partner's father is a long-time tenured professor (I had him for some classes - woo, that was uncomfortable) and knowing him, we definitely aren't expecting to be wealthy. Putting it mildly.
-
I am hoping for funding, as we all are, but I don't know if I can mentally (and to some extent, physically) cope with another year of retail. If I only got into one of my top three choices (out of nine) and it was without funding, I would consider trying to rely on loans. My partner will support our living expenses, so it would basically just be taking care of tuition. I probably would not even consider attending my bottom two choices without funding.
-
At one of my schools I met with two professors who both want me. They said that if I get in, they will probably share. THAT was a confidence booster, let me tell you. Sadly, the school in question has pretty much no funding at all this year. :/

I applied to another school today, after receiving an EXTREMELY enthusiastic response to my inquiry from the director. So I'm feeling good about that. Unfortunately it's a new program and I don't know where to send my GRE scores, so I have to wait for a call back from the message I left with the secretary before I order 'em.

I'm curious as to why your mom got involved. Was that just to put additional leverage on the professor?

It isn't really nonvegetarian, it's nonvegan. It's filtered through activated charcoal which sometimes is sourced from bone char - animal bones. There's no way to tell whether bone char has been used or not.

If you're near a Wegmans, which are the flat-out best grocery retailer this side of the Atlantic, they have imported cookies aplenty. Plus, depending on where you are, the caloric delights may be myriad - I'm a little scared if I get accepted to a Pennsylvania school, land of cheesesteaks and funnel cakes. And oh god, has anyone else every been to Berkey Creamery on Penn State's main campus? HERE COMES THE BUYING OF THE BIGGER PANTS.
-
That is generally a vegan rule rather than a vegetarian rule, afaik. I know people set their own wide variety of dietary rules, but all the vegetarians I know eat gelatin and avoid only flesh, it's the vegans who eschew Jell-O. I'm curious - do you also avoid refined cane sugar and cheese?

Agree with this 100%. Would you really want a recommender writing you a letter because they were forced to? I personally wouldn't have many good things to say if I was recommending against my will.
-
Okay, I'd start contacting your other professors and asking if someone would mind writing an emergency recommendation. Don't name names, just say one of your recommenders fell through and you're in a tight spot.
-
1. It depends on the program. Some do, others do not. If you had tracking on your packages, you can make sure that they at least arrived. Only three out of eight of my departments emailed me to confirm receipt, but I had tracking on the packages, so I know they got there. If they are missing something, they'll probably let you know. 2. No way to know. Depends on your field and the department. Use the results search to see if you can get any data about when your programs notify. 3. I think that's probably fine. You were going off the last information you had from them. It definitely can't hurt. 4. Well, it's fine, except you won't be able to know when and if your packages arrive. I'm sure they won't hold it against you.

Because there hasn't been a pool for a few days

If I don't get in, I'm thinking pastry school. So restaurant + fair trade chocolate FTW. -
If this person posts again, make sure to QFT if you respond. How annoying.

My partner will be working, so hopefully we won't be as broke as we would if it was just two students. I anticipate a lot of crock pot meals. I'm hoping that wherever we go, there'll be a Thai restaurant there. I've become really, really accustomed to (and spoiled by) the awesome Thai restaurants in our current city. *drools over larb *

Oh sweet minty jesus. I'm really sorry to hear that you've been having such a hard time! I'm not sure about asking them to disregard a recommendation that they have already received, but do you have someone lined up to send a supplemental recommendation to bolster your application?
-
I do a weird fusion of three subfields. Bohhhhh.

It's because Tuesday is the lowest-volume mail day. I don't think it makes sense, though - wouldn't it be smarter to space the no-mail days more evenly throughout the week?
