C&EN article on PhD schools of tenured faculty?
Faraday replied to BlackAlbino's topic in Chemistry Forum
I think this is what you are looking for: http://pubs.acs.org/cen/education/8139/8139education1.html -
In short, yes. Unless you genuinely have equal interest in all of those programs then I would narrow it down to at least 3-4. I suppose you could visit some places just for fun, although for me it seems disingeneious to do that at the school's expense if I'm not really interested in going there. I am already planning on which schools I will turn down if I hear back from anyone else at this point and playing out the various scenarios of visiting weekends in my head. I don't really want to be visiting any more than four schools. If you plan to visit Colorado State shoot me a message.

http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php Search by school, and sort by program. http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php No, not yet. According to previous years, the last week(s) in January/the first week in February seem to be when most acceptances are sent out. It also seems like that is when most rejections are sent out, so we should have an idea of where we stand relatively soon. One of the visit days for UCLA is next weekend, because one of the members on here was accepted there and they mentioned it. I don't know about other dates but presumably there are several. http://www.princeton.edu/chemistry/graduate/admissions/ How can I visit Princeton chemistry? In late winter, we will hold three visiting weekends for accepted students. The 2013 visits will be: February 15-16, March 8-9 and March 22-23. Prospective students will have the opportunity to learn about ongoing research in the department, meet with faculty and graduate students, tour the University, graduate housing, and explore the town of Princeton.

It looks like Yale already sent out one round of acceptances, presumably to the most outstanding applicants. I would expect one more round. Based on the past results they have accepted most people in the final week of January/first week(s) of February. I didn't apply to Harvard but again, looking at past years' results, it seems they have usually sent out acceptances in the final week of January.

I saw the flood of Washington acceptances on the results page. Congrats! Does this make the UT-Austin decision any more difficult?

It has indeed been pretty quiet. Adcoms probably thought to themselves, "we could tell them this week, but let's just wait until next week so they have to squirm..." Was the person accepted to the University of Colorado-Boulder a poster here?

I would prepare as if it were your top choice and be able to offer an engaging discussion, ask insightful questions, etc. so that when you do visit your top choice you will have a better idea of how you want conversations with potential POIs to go based on experience... Look at this as a warmup for impressing POIs later who will really matter.

Assuming this works like some of the offers I have received, you will get the basic stipend plus an additional amount (a few thousand) for the first year (usually). They do this for very strong applicants as a way of persuading you attend that school.
