cotterw got a reaction from Waltzfordebby in Arizona PhD funding for 4 years only..so what happens for year 5?
    Hi all,
I thought I'd chime in because I'm currently a phd student at AZ in both the linguistics and anthropology departments. PhD students in linguistics are a "priority" for funding for 4 years, and then they are a lower priority for the 5th year. I can say that our department has a fantastic record of students getting good external fellowships for the last year. I have also seen students who are further along in the program getting teaching assignments still. We also do have a lot of people powering through the program at a pretty quick pace. So I think the answer I would give is pretty much the same as fuzzylogician, if you're making good progress through the program and they can still find you a teaching appointment for the 5th year they will probably do whatever they can to help you. I don't know if the situation is different at all for international students though.
Either way, you'll still be on the hook for the mandatory fees, which are university mandated and the dept can't pay. It comes out to ~$500 a semester, and all the students in the dept pay them regardless of their teaching appointment/funding situation. I had a fellowship my first year and I still had to put up the money for the fees so they're unavoidable. Hopefully that's helpful and if anyone who is applying wants to reach out to me and ask more questions about the program feel free. My email is in my profile.

I'm a Research finalist for Jordan! I'm glad they finally got those notifications out, the wait was miserable.

Hey all. I pop on here from time to time (right now because I'm one of the many people waiting for Fulbright finalist notifications), and I saw some people on the results page who got admitted to the joint Anthropology & Linguistics PhD at the University of Arizona. Congrats! I'm in that program right now. If you have questions or want to say hello, feel free to reach out. Hopefully we'll see you at the prospective student weekend!

    Hey y'all,
I saw some acceptances to U Arizona linguistics on the results page. Just wanted to say congrats from someone who is currently in that department! Hopefully we'll see you all at the visit weekend!

cotterw got a reaction from Arezoo in Wondering about prospects for a non-terrible PhD
I agree with hovariel. GPA isn't crucial, but having a high one is helpful. GRE only seems important in the sense that it's used as a cutoff metric. That being said, my quantitative percentile was in the 30s, so ridiculously low and I got accepted to a couple of PhD programs so low test scores also shouldn't be a total deterrent.

Most important definitely seems to be solid writing/researching abilities, good letters of reference, and fit with prospective programs. Obviously nothing is all inclusive and it's never all perfect though.

So the season's finally over... We've all had some good results, some bad ones (except our champion onzeheures!), and it's been a very daunting process (no less daunting than the one coming ahead: getting housing, moving -for some of us, abroad-, and actually starting our degrees!)

I wanted to thank you all for your support during this last Spring-Summer (or your Fall-Winter), and to wish you the very best of lucks in pursuing your graduate studies (no, I did not copy this last sentence from all the rejections letters, ).

Good luck! See you at conferences,

I got rejected twice. Thank you, Pitt. I am so stupid that I did not get it the first time you rejected me...

Waitlisted by UC Davis today. I've already committed elsewhere and had honestly assumed I was going to get a rejection since I hadn't heard anything until now. It's nice to know I at least made the wait list though. If anyone is waiting on UC Davis I'll be telling them to take me off the wait list to make sure no one does any more waiting than they have to

cotterw got a reaction from pears in University of Arizona??
Just as an FYI, I got an email tonight from Arizona saying that I had been recommended for admission for the dual Anth/Ling phd program. So I'd assume other notices should be going out soon.
