  1. @hawaisi yes! i (and my dissertation committee) am eagerly awaiting something from IIE as well!
  2. I'm a Research finalist for Jordan! I'm glad they finally got those notifications out, the wait was miserable.
  3. I obviously don't know the official answer to this, but my on campus fulbright contact told me that the medical forms were primarily just to assess that you were physically capable of doing the work / grant. It would be terribly inappropriate if anyone were to disqualify a candidate because of something like that in their medical history. Also, it was quite a long time ago at this point, so I would imagine you're fine.
  4. Hey all. I pop on here from time to time (right now because I'm one of the many people waiting for Fulbright finalist notifications), and I saw some people on the results page who got admitted to the joint Anthropology & Linguistics PhD at the University of Arizona. Congrats! I'm in that program right now. If you have questions or want to say hello, feel free to reach out. Hopefully we'll see you at the prospective student weekend!

  6. Hi all, Semi-finalist for the Jordan program for Research/Study. Congrats to all the other folks who made it to the semi-final stage, and like a number of other people have mentioned on here, not getting an award isn't a negative reflection on any of us/our success/our work!
  7. Hey y'all, I noticed a few acceptances at Arizona on the results page. Congrats! Hopefully we'll see you at the visit weekend!

    EAPSI 2016

So it looks like we've only got one NZ acceptance that has posted on this thread? I'm still waiting to hear back on mine, just curious if anyone else heard about NZ last week.

I'm waiting on NZ as well, haven't seen anything go out on here about it yet though :/
  11. The hike is usually pretty tame! We don't want to wear any of you out, just show you how beautiful this part of Arizona is!
  12. Hi! I'm honestly not sure. They don't really let us know much until they give the grad student organization in the department a list of people who are coming to prospective student weekend, because the grad students largely organize the logistics of the visit weekend. All I can really say about ANLI admissions is that it does have to go through two different departments admissions committees, so it could take longer, but I really don't know. Hopefully you get positive results though!
  13. Hey y'all, I saw some acceptances to U Arizona linguistics on the results page. Just wanted to say congrats from someone who is currently in that department! Hopefully we'll see you all at the visit weekend!
  14. No problem! As someone who is in the thick of this program, I just want to say it is a really great department and it's an incredibly comfortable and welcoming group of people to work with every day. So, best of luck in the application process!
  15. I'm not totally sure about what they work on but the University of Oslo might be a good option? It's at least worth looking into.
  16. Hi all, I thought I'd chime in because I'm currently a phd student at AZ in both the linguistics and anthropology departments. PhD students in linguistics are a "priority" for funding for 4 years, and then they are a lower priority for the 5th year. I can say that our department has a fantastic record of students getting good external fellowships for the last year. I have also seen students who are further along in the program getting teaching assignments still. We also do have a lot of people powering through the program at a pretty quick pace. So I think the answer I would give is pretty much the same as fuzzylogician, if you're making good progress through the program and they can still find you a teaching appointment for the 5th year they will probably do whatever they can to help you. I don't know if the situation is different at all for international students though. Either way, you'll still be on the hook for the mandatory fees, which are university mandated and the dept can't pay. It comes out to ~$500 a semester, and all the students in the dept pay them regardless of their teaching appointment/funding situation. I had a fellowship my first year and I still had to put up the money for the fees so they're unavoidable. Hopefully that's helpful and if anyone who is applying wants to reach out to me and ask more questions about the program feel free. My email is in my profile.
  17. I don't know a great deal about the HLT program at AZ or specifically the PhD in comp ling there, but I'm an incoming Anth/Linguistics phd student there and the department as a whole, I have to say seems really great. I specifically remember meeting the faculty member who is in charge of the HLT program during my campus visit and he's a great guy, the rest of the faculty I met with were all top notch. I'm not sure that they fund the HLT masters, they probably don't or you'd be low on the funding list. Their PhD funding is a little confusing but it's pretty decent for Tucson, which has a low cost of living. Every one of the prospective students that came to the visit weekend that I was in contact with said they were incredibly impressed with the Linguistics dept there, even if they ended up deciding to go somewhere. It's a really solid/welcoming dept.

    Atlanta, GA

I did my undergrad at GSU, and you're right downtown is primarily offices. There are a few good restaurants in the general area of GSU, but it's pretty limited in general. My preference for hanging out was always East Atlanta Village. There are like 10 bars within two blocks of each other so if you're into drinking I'd wager that's a good spot. There are also some good restaurants over there, and Joes Coffee is a good place to hang out and people watch. Aside from that, I worked in Inman Park off of North Highland Ave and there are some good places to hang out there as well. Virginia Highlands is another good area. Little Five Points is kind of over the top (and overrated in my opinion) but there are a ton of places to eat and drink around there. I know less of Decatur, but it does have good restaurants and I would sometimes go and do work in any number of coffee shops out that way. People that I know who live in Decatur really love it, and seem to say that it has everything they want/need. So if you're looking for spots to hang out I'd bet Decatur could accommodate.
  19. I agree with hovariel. GPA isn't crucial, but having a high one is helpful. GRE only seems important in the sense that it's used as a cutoff metric. That being said, my quantitative percentile was in the 30s, so ridiculously low and I got accepted to a couple of PhD programs so low test scores also shouldn't be a total deterrent. Most important definitely seems to be solid writing/researching abilities, good letters of reference, and fit with prospective programs. Obviously nothing is all inclusive and it's never all perfect though.
  20. Finally heard back from the final program I was waiting on. Thrilled to have this process finally behind me.
  21. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
  22. Woke up to an email this morning from the University of Pittsburgh prompting me to check the website. Unsurprisingly a standard form rejection was waiting for me. It's not a biggie because I've already committed elsewhere, but man it took them forever to get that decision out.
