  1. Ah. Perhaps I was 'projecting' my insecurities and my own feelings on to you. How fitting for a psychology forum. Thanks. Hopefully grad schools will think so too and won't think of it as too 'unfocused' : S
  2. http://www.glendon.yorku.ca/iBA/ http://www.glendon.y...rements.html#sh http://www.glendon.y...ology/index.php Literally a trilingual iBA so I have to a certain amount of english, french, and spanish language courses and do a certain amount of my degree requirements in english, french and spanish. also have to take a certain amount of internationally oriented courses and go on an international exchange and then do my reqs for my psychology degree I could give you the exact requirements but I doubt your interested in as I assume you think my degree is bs, and while I somewhat agree a ) whatever and b ) I'm almost done my trilingual iBA reqs so again, whatever.
  3. Helllloooooo So I know this is not related to grad school applications that I've submitted or interviews etc Hopefully this will be a welcomed break from the application freak outs... I'm a third year student and I'm having what a mild psych-student identity crisis, or maybe more a mid-degree crisis I haven't been feeling ready at all to write my honors thesis next year or to graduate.... So I thought that I might take a fifth year just to do my honors thesis and seminars (so a fifth year) and have more time overall to focus on my grades... but I'm feeling like I won't even have time to complete all courses even if I do a fifth year for the following reasons: I'm doing a trilingual international bachelor of arts so a lot of my degree of my degree so far has been fulfilling those requirements. I don't feel like a psych major. May have been a mistake in retrospect. I'm also doing a specialization in cognitive neuropsychology, so I have specific requirements for that (21 credits) so once I fulfill those and my general specialized honors psych requirements I don't really have room for other courses I will probably be applying to clinical programs around a year before or after I graduate, and I have seen repeatedly that clinical programs look for certain prereqs. For example, my institution lists the following: The honours degree equivalent for students applying to the Clinical Area should include:One full-course in Introductory Psychology; One full-course in Research Design and Statistical Analysis; and, The equivalent of six other full-courses in psychology. Applicants to the Clinical Area are expected to have a general background and knowledge in core content areas of psychology. Of the six other full-courses, one full-course or two half courses in each of the following core content areas, taken at the undergraduate level, are accepted as satisfying this expectation: biological bases of behaviour (e.g. physiological psychology, comparative psychology, neuropsychology, sensation, psychopharmacology, health psychology) cognitive-affective bases of behaviour (e.g. learning, memory, perception, cognition, thinking, motivation, emotion), social bases of behaviour (e.g. social psychology, cultural, ethnic and group processes, sex roles, organizational and systems theory), and individual behaviour (e.g. personality theory, human development, individual differences, abnormal psychology). ... So.... I definitely won't have time to do six credits 'social bases of behavior' or 'individual behavior' (should have 'biological' and 'cognitive' down from cognitive neuropsych specialization Is it really necessary to have all of those courses? What about other courses I am interested in? FINALLY, I should explain that I think that this is stemming from recently discovering I have broader interests than I had previously thought... and I'd really like to narrow down before I apply to grad school and the best way I can think of doing this is through course work... Can any of you relate/provide support? Sorry for the long post (again) and thanks in advance!
  4. You have an inspired moment... ''THAT would be a good research question!'' How do you organize your ideas? Do you have a notebook? .doc file? Is there an app for that? Somewhere online? I'm curious

  6. Ps @rcpk310 I went to a TC info seminar and their ''Clinical Masters'' program really isn't a Clinical Masters program per se... TC offers what seems to be a pretty general MA program with two 'tracks' the clinically oriented track is the MA in Psychology in Education: Applied Track (in Personality and Psychopathology)... which doesn't exactly seem like a Masters in Clinical to me... A couple of things that I'd like to mention from the seminar: PROS -if you are interested in TC's faculty might be a good opportunity to network/work with profs if you'd like to apply there for your PhD, I think they have some pretty good counselling area profs but it's definitely not my area of expertise... a lot of their clinical faculty are kind of counselling-y too as a lot of them do psychotherapy stuff CONS -there are virtually no research assistant/research opportunities at the Masters level -their programs are SUPER expensive. SUPER EXPENSIVE. You could also look at other non-general masters programs? Also.. on another note Counselling psychology still entails research too... maybe you mean that you like research that is 'hard(er) science'?
  7. Thanks I still find it hard to focus on the micro level... I find myself thinking 'I must do well on all of my exams in all of my courses coming up' (which is of course true, but a way bigger workload than 'I must do well on this upcoming quiz') and then I get stressed out... any recommendations on time management that would help me to focus on things on the micro level? Oh ps, Gellert, after having looked at my transcript the prof said that it would be best until I raise my gpa to do the independent study... probably a good idea!
  8. Ha. You're right, I think we were talking about the same thing. I guess it all usually works out being the same right? A colleague and former member of our lab did her PhD in the UK, which I guess took her a few years less than it would have in Canada, and apparently she will have to do more post-docs to kind of 'make up for it'.... I guess it all evens out eventually...
  9. Sonicmasics (did I get that name right?) You are applying to the two institutions I have studied in (undergrad) in the only two cities I have ever lived So if you have any general questions about the cities or institutions let me know! Also, York's undergrad and graduate psych student association (I'm the prez at my campus of the undergrad at my campus, no big deal) have a little initiative where we've partnered grad students with undergrads who want to pursue grad studies My mentor is in history of psych, so if you have any questions I can ask him, or connect you, he's fucking awesome. Ps the name of the uni in calgs is the University of Calgary : )
  10. Oh and ps... I suppose I should have written 'most countries in Europe' instead of 'europe' in my original post because the UK definitely has direct entry. My bad.
  11. That's true, may vary, I apologize. Haven't looked into social psych programs But Clinical? Really? I haven't come across any... Well PsyDs at unis in Québec yes but no PhDs I know McGill, and some other schools I'm sure have Masters/PhD programs.. Kinda like in 'in track masters/PhD programs in the states... But pretty sure you still enter the program as a Masters student right? Curious!
  12. Gellert, it's been going ok... I got 100% on a psychobio quiz last week somehow! I feel like it never ends though... Thank you both : ) I'm just going to keep trying! Hopefully I can remain motivated :S
  13. I just want to point out that in Canada there is no direct entry from undergrad to PhD programs Like in Europe, you do 2 years doing your masters and 3 years doing your PhD (there are rare circumstances where, if you are a complete genius, you can defend your masters thesis as a PhD dissertation) which means: -programs usually accept roughly the equivalent of american PhD programs so around 8-15 or less -programs are usually funded -programs are research intensive (generally, depends on the program of course)
  14. Hey both, Sorry this response is so delayed Rude of me. I've actually been studying and spending less time on the gradcafe, haha Thank you so much for the moral support and your help!
  15. Sorry if this is redundant... But I can't figure out how to search the forum on my iPhone for a similar topic... What kind of docs should one provide to referees? SOPs? Transcripts? Writing samples? Etc? Thanks!
  16. I apologize again for my franticness.... Thank you so much Lewin. I realize that now is definitely my last chance to change things You are right But I'm not giving up on this yet... I've thought about this and realize that I would have to submit all transcripts when applying, however I looked at grad school apps this morning and the couple that I were looking at asked for entry of your gpa from the undergrad program you're graduating from so, yes, they'll see all transcripts but hypothetically, assuming I do WAY better in the upcoming years.... The gpa from the institution I would transfer to would be better (because it does not have my previous grades weighing it down) Wouldn't it be better to have this hypothetical gpa entered, even though I'll have to submit all transcripts? I'm going to talk to my supervisor about this today :S Thanks so much for all your help Lewin I really appreciate it
  17. So as the topic title would suggest I'm having a bit of a nervous breakdown right now... Firstly, I am (rightly so) freaking out about my gpa considering that I really want to pursue psych research I am in my second year, Ive completed 40 credits, and my transcript is horrible. I have a D (intro span lit), a D+ (intro psych, retook and got an A), an F (intermediate French, retook and got a C+), a bunch of C's and B's, and the intro psych A aforementioned. My gpa is a 5.36 on a 9 scale, which translates into a C+ letter grade. Not sure what it would be on a 4 point scale, but I'm sure it wouldn't be good. Obviously there won't be any grad schools who are stoked on these stats. I've heard of transferring earlier in your degree to 'refresh' your gpa I really don't want to do this but would this be the way I should do it? Secondly, I've been working as an RA at my institution for a year now, and asked my supervisor which courses I should take to complement the research we do at the lab and for grad school in general. He insisted I do an individual study and actually contacted the director of our grad program, with whom we work very closely, to see if she would take me on. She originally didn't ask to see my transcript, but recently has. I'm freaking out. I don't want to show this to her, but I can't exactly just turn her down out of nowhere now. Also, my supervisor hasn't asked to see my transcript since last year so I'm worried that if I tell her the truth, word will get around to him, since they are very close... Sorry if the above is frantically written, I'm writing from my iPhone and will make edits from my MacBook later Thanks in advance for your help!
  18. The below is the best advice in this thread! I was just having a conversation about this This is such a good point, I'm personally going to follow this advice
  19. I haven't written a grad school SOP but I had to write one for a school in France for an exchange program and found the following quite useful... Have you googled this? there are a ton of different how-to's, blogs, school websites etc with pretty good ideas I think You can start from there, if you find any inspiration, even for an outline When you can't write any more take a break, talk to friends about it, get feedback Then re-write, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat... Maybe even google 'writer's block' for how-to's etc? Couldn't hurt...
  20. This is anecdotal... but I've always heard of studies that have shown of the unimportance of the GRE as a predictor of graduate success I'm up in Canada though, and I know we probably have slightly different attitudes than America about this The more Iook at this topic the more I think that this poster should re-take the GREs (whether or not they predict grad success) because it limits the poster's options significantly, and the poster should probably apply to the best fitting schools if they want to go to grad school, right?
  21. There has been some disagreement on whether this is SUCH a good idea or not... I'm wondering, might this vary by program?
  22. Awesome thanks! I guess my question was equally 'do second+ author pubs have significant value' and it seems as if the general consensus is yes. Thank you!
  23. How important are having first author publication(s) for grad school admittance? When people recommend trying to publish during undergrad are they referring to anything or to being a first author? Any Canadian perspectives? (as I know we are a bit different up north!)
