  1. (I'm currently an undergrad in Ohio) U of Illinois is having an orientation/visit on April 6th (Monday), I'd have to fly to and from. (Illinois is one of my top three program choices) Then on April 8th (Wednesday), I'm flying to New Orleans to present at a national conference. (I'd have to miss my undergrad classes because of these trips) Would it be too much/too difficult/overwhelming to try to go to the April 6th event? I can't get out of the April 8th one. I sort of want to go, but if anything goes wrong (miss flight, canceled flight, etc.), I'll be screwed. My mom says I def. shouldn't go to Illinois, but I'm looking for some more opinions. I need to let them know today! :!: Thanks!
  2. I wrote my recommenders a nice thank you card and stuck it in their mailboxes at school. I didn't get them gifts or gift cards because I still have a class with one of them and see them all the time. I didn't want to seem bribey, and I really don't have the extra $$ anyway. They were all very appreciative of the cards and acted like it wasn't necessary. The cards I sent were actually wedding thank you cards that I mistakenly picked up at Target. LOL They were pretty though!
  3. Now that I've heard back from all my schools, I now have to choose! Anyone made a decision yet? I haven't heard anything about funding yet. I'm worried about paying for it/having to make my decision based purely on what I can afford ugh! This decision is so much more stressful than waiting
  4. Cats are pretty easy to care for. If you get a regular American Shorthair, you don't need to bathe them or brush them that regularly. (though my cats do love a good brushing!) As for being house broken, most cats are really good at using the litter box. Just show it to them a few times, and they'll know to use it. (same with their food, water, and scratching posts) So easy!
  5. I'm one of the ones with 5 cats in my house! But there is a good reason! I'm not *that* much of a crazy cat lady. I still live at home (fin. reasons), and we have 3 cats. But my sister's family is moving to England for a few years, and their 2 cats are not part of the move (she doesn't want to put them through the travel or quarantine). So we're taking them in. So that's why the 5 cats...but when I move out for grad school in the fall, I'm taking 2 with me. That'll straighten out the situation!
  6. I was thinking a prof from a different department! Still trouble?
  7. Haha, what a great topic! I seem to develop mini crushes on most of my male profs, but I think it is just because their older and wiser than all the dudes around me in undergrad. Or maybe it is because I have major daddy issues....Not sure. Probably both. Is it taboo to date a prof in grad school? hrmmm...maybe we might all start acting on our crushes?!
  8. IU uses Apply Yourself, but, as far as I can tell, there is no place where it says "accepted." The message center doesn't have any info in it. They just sent me a letter via snailmail.
  9. that does seem like it is a rejection... sorry goldie!
  10. Thanks! I think she'd totally understand. I think she'd be happy to wander around campus or the city on her own too. I think I just need to let her know that I'd like to attend these things solo.
  11. Yes, let the anxiety and fretting begin!! I don't even want to know what my mailman thinks of me. I run to the mailbox seconds after he's stuffed it. I'm going to start focusing my energy on going to the gym and my undergrad studies. I feel very disconnected from my courses now... Anyway, Good luck this week!!
  12. I'm still in undergrad, but I'm finding it weird to mention my plans to friends, family, and profs. I'm not sure why, but I'm keeping my news or lack there of pretty private. Also, not many students from my major are going on to graduate school now, so I don't want to be "LOOK WHAT I'M DOING!! I HAVE A PLAN!" How horrible that you fear sabotage! I'm keeping mum because I'm a private person, and I don't want to seem like an oversharer or braggart.
  13. This is sort of connected: This is embarrassing, but MY MOM wants to go on campus visits with me. While I love my mom and want her to be part of my decision, I think I will def. let her explore on her own while I do other things. Would it appear juvenile or whatever if she attends the "family" functions? (others in thread mention spouses and children, do moms fit in too?)
  14. As someone who hopes to meet Mr. Right during grad school (*wink wink*), I've thought about this quite a bit. I'm willing to move anywhere, and I want to distance myself from my hometown. My hometown is a place where everyone tries desperately to leave, and I'm no exception. So while I'll move away for grad school, I'm also totally up for moving anywhere after I get my degree. I think this openess will benefit me in the job market by opening up opportunities around the country, but it will also help with coordinating a potential mate's preference/job availability as well. Maybe you'll meet someone who won't mind (or prefers) to move away from their hometown or you guys can comprimise between the two places? Academic couples do have a hard time coordinating locations though..I know many profs whose spouses live and work hours away!
  15. Nice pool! Also, you're so beautiful, you could be a part-time model...But you'd probably have to keep your normal job.
  16. Coming from quite a small town and (hopefully) going to a much larger city, I dream of partaking in Indian food quite frequently once I start grad school. I love Chicken Tikka Masala! I do anticipate being quite poor, so I'll have to limit myself somewhat. Also, is it a crazy dream to think of losing weight in grad school??
  17. I, too, am a crazy tv whore. Here's a list of some shows I like: Flight of the Conchords (I love Bret and his sugar lumps) Big Love HIMYM American Idol House LOST United States of Tara Grey's Anatomy The Office 30 Rock Psych The Real World (a bit ashamed of this one) Celebrity Sober House Reruns of Beverly Hills, 90210 Ruby BBCA's You Are What You Eat
