  1. So in light of this, does choosing Harvard over Wisconsin sound stupid when I have a full ride to both for five years? (so all things basically being equal, would the prestige of wisconsin override Harvard's fit with my sub fields)?
  2. What are your subfields? That question helped me kind of lean a certain way. To everyone: how much do rankings matter? (wisconsin #1 ; harvard #8)... does that make a huge difference?
  3. i am not quite sure what you are asking... and I wasn't the person who posted, but I also won the university fellowship today. They didn't mention anything about summer grants I don't think. And the stipend was about 19k. Is this what you were asking? HBE
  4. I am at a crossroads in terms of subfield. I want to get into migration, so Wisconsin seems like a great fit for that. On the other hand, I want to study inequality, incarceration, and urban sociology: Harvard. I need to figure this out ...
  5. I figured this would be a good time to start a thread having to do with making a decision (as opposed to threads about 1 school). Right now, I'm deciding between Wisconsin and Harvard... but I would love to hear from Michigan so my decision is more complicated ...
  6. slothy - i've heard nothing but silence from princeton, stanford, and chicago. I'm assuming I got rejected at this point. If you look at the results page, they do a wave of rejections in March. I'll probably be in that batch. Unless I hear something today or monday, these schools sound like dead ends.
  7. Not at all... they have a lot more people to invite.
  8. just got accepted!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Hi that was me. I got a personal phone call from the department. They had over 400 applications this year for 10 spots. They gave me a $23,000 stipend + benefits, full tuition remission and fees for 5 years. Good luck everyone!
  10. my boyfriend and I are most likely moving to the Boston/Cambridge area. He applied to Brandeis and I applied to Harvard. Any suggestions on how to make our commute easy for the both of us?
  11. gah! mine is meeting today - 15th. I would me utterly surprised if I even got honorable mention. I keep praying to the sociology gods.
  12. Did anyone get an actual date for visit day? I only got "sometime in March," and I didn't ask further because I was literally shaking and jumping around.
  13. I got in today as well.
  14. Who got in?
  15. I think you should check the results page. And typically people hear and create a thread once they've heard. As far as Michigan goes, the results page shows people hearing as early as Feb 7 (rejection), and as early as Feb 14 (acceptance) so, end of this week/beginning of next week? That would be my guess. Hope that helps! Good luck
  16. Are you joking? Any classical sociological theory course surveys Marx, Weber, and Durkheim, sometimes exclusively. These are the underpinnings of our entire field!! Not to mention, most (if not all) doctoral programs require strong theoretical training in your coursework. You would be remiss to NOT read these three social theorists. To the original poster: I would recommend The Marx Engles Reader (Tucker), From Max Weber (Mills), and Durkheim (Nisbet), that is, if you want to cover classical sociological theory. Contemporary theory is kind of up to you! -- The subfields have their own theoretical bases, but I would highly recommend what was posted by others. Babbie is a great start for methods, but it is really up to you, again.
  17. just got an acceptance letter. woot!
  18. Has anyone received word about funding yet?
  19. They are giving me full funding for the visit day for travel expenses and housing.
  20. I am really holding back not calling/emailing. I really want to know.. oh well!
  21. I have this superstition that if you call you will mos def get a rejection. This is based on me seeing that on the results page. "I called and they said I was rejected." lol..
  22. congrats Applicant X! You must feel really proud.
  23. As far as I know, if you get a stipend, you're looking at 15-20k. But of course I could be completely wrong! That was just my experience.
  24. That is taken right off of the FAQ from Berkeley's Soc Dept website. It includes all applicants. They don't divide up their stats by domestic and int'l
  25. LOL... what is going on!?! Did someone actually get accepted?
