  1. Yale's master is one year so it means you would have to apply this Fall and basically you would not take the most out of your Yale degree with regards to apps (since you would have started only 2 months before apps are due). What I am saying is that with the UW 2 years master, you apply in the Fall of 2013 for an entry in 2014, meaning you will have more than a year of master under your belt when you apply (+ great relationships with LOR writers, etc), which is a great asset. UW is also a great school, so do not worry about it.
  2. Sorry to hear that...Best of luck!
  3. What is it then? Where are you going to be in the fall?
  4. Alright cool I just added you. As for my interests, I like comparative stuff. I worked a lot on Europe before and would like to expand my focus and also look at the US. Main angle of attack is racism and immigrant assimilation. Who are you POIs? I met Swedberg when I visited and I can tell you he is a nice guy! And brilliant as well!
  5. Hey I had trouble doing it on CollegeNet too. I managed in the end to formally accept the offer on the web with my ID and all that. I will get the NetId thing next week (it has been sent to me but I have not received it yet). If Susan did it it should be ok. What are your interests? Have you visited and met with profs there? Edit: I just saw you mention econ soc on your profile. You came to the right place!
  6. And good call for the FB group
  7. You are going? Awesome! And congratulations on getting off the waitlist. I confirmed my offer a few days ago. What are your interests? It is exciting to meet my future fellow students! I wil be the immigration/race and ethnicity guy (unless I am not the only one
  8. I saw on the results page that two persons got accepted off the waitlist. That's be great if they could show up here!
  9. Congratulations!
  10. Yes, strong law schools = strong soc programs, except for the top school: Yale, good program but below what you would expect. To the OP: your file looks original and quite strong. Do not worry about the GPA, maybe adress it in your SOP, but it will be ok
  11. Officially committed to Cornell
  12. Let's hope your cousin does not stumble upon this thread.
  13. With regards to what largo said on Cornell: I got into Cornell with absolutely no extra-curriculars (save for editing the undergraduate sociology journal). In general, grad school commitees do not care about extra curriculars (unless they are extraordinary). Research, fit, and numbers are much, much more important.
  14. But if I remember correctly, you sounded pretty stoked to be at UT-Austin, right? Still happy nevertheless?
  15. Can you elaborate a bit on this path dependency thing? Thanks
  16. Stop posting on gradcafe and relax!
  17. Good one about the time. For me it was so short I submitted 3 apps in a rush (including my absolute no 1 choice) because of finals, and all that. Then the next day I realize I had left typos in my writing sample (which I had also finished the same day). In the end I wasted 300$ and none of these programs accepted me. Still got in somewhere great though, but never underestimate how time consuming that process is. To me, apps + GRE = 1,5 hard course in terms of time
  18. Yes if you go to conference in the summer it makes sense. However, we have seen many applicants here building relationships with potential supervisors (some even saying things like "I am looking forward to seeing you in the fall") fail in the end. I just suggest not to put too much weight on such relationships in the admission process, although it sure can help. And I also suggest to all Fall 2013 applicants not to spend too much time on this forum, it just makes things more stressful. Good luck!
  19. This is too early I would say. Why don't you wait until the application season kicks off in mid/late September?
  20. Ah ok sorry my bad! I thought it was the (legendary) Howard S. Then yes it makes sense! Gonna check out that other Becker!
  21. Great quote. Just a small precision: Becker was surely not a student in the 1920s since he is still alive. 1940s or 1950s seems more plausible.
  22. For comparative historical, UCLA and Harvard top the list hands down.
  23. So who has heard from Cornell recently? Who is really thinking of attending?
  24. Urban sociology is often linked to other subfields of sociology. For example, a classic one is race relations (for example, ethnographies of ghettos, etc). Another classic is culture. In any event, if you like sociology in urban contexts, try to find another subfield to link it to.
  25. Does your interest for food systems and animal agriculture stem from your defense of animal rights or the environment? Or in what priority? Feel free to answer by pm, I am just curious
