Possibly late letter of recommendation after acceptance
frenzydude replied to jdanapa's topic in Computer Science
You are being unnecessarily tensed. I don't think a university can rescind their offer after accepting. You already have the offer letter ? -
You probably should find a good job. Waterloo is among the top 3 in Canada, the best is UToronto i think. Toronto, UBC and Waterloo are all great Canadian universities for CS.

UIUC vs Princeton EE PhD (both funded)...
frenzydude replied to george21's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I'd have gone to Princeton. It is the more difficult school to get into and Ivy ! -
"Harvard"

UC Irvine v/s NCSU v/s IITs - MS in CS
frenzydude replied to Pratik Patel's topic in Computer Science
My 2 cents being from IIT. You have no plans of doing PhD. So I think going abroad would be better for getting a higher paid job and better career options. The placement scenario at IITs for MTechs is good, but not as good as the BTechs, and there are differences depending on which IIT you go to. That being said, i havent heard of NCSU. UCI should be a decent choice, given its location in California and its top-30 ranking. UPenn is probably the best choice if you can manage the funds, followed by UMich (good chance of getting funding here). Wait for these two results. -
I am pretty sure you would go for UMD. You might even skip the visit Btw, I am headed to USC for PhD. That's the only admit I had so I have nothing to decide between. I strongly believe that a top choice should always be the one where you would never get into, so mine would be MIT

If you are looking for theoretical machine learning, as I mentioned a professor from Caltech has recently moved to ETHZ.

St. Louis was the first American city to host the olympics and where 7-Up and the ice cream cone was invented. It's home to the Missouri Botanical Gardens which is among the top three botanical gardens in the world. It's home to Jack Dorsey, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Ozzie Smith, Nelly, Sheryl Crowe, Maya Angelou, Yogi Berra, Kevin Kline, Henry Schvey, Roger Goldman and John Goodman. It also is known for toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, and provel cheese. It’s also home to the best bbq, the largest beer-producing plant in the USA, the tallest monument in the USA (the Arch) and host the largest Mardi Gras celebration outside of New Orleans and hosts the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s home to Washington University which is one of the most prestigious colleges in the USA and Saint Louis University which is the oldest university west of the Mississippi.

I would go to CMU without thinking twice. Its #1 in rankings and you have to spend 5 years doing a PhD at the place.

I'm coming to USC. Accepted their offer. Anyone else coming ? Didn't find many people on the 'Meet and Greet' thread either (probably its too early).

Especially in developing countries, it maybe very difficult for a girl's family to support her decision for higher studies too. I am sure they were just trying to make you comfortable on visit day.

****IVY LEAGUE (M.S.) vs STATE SCHOOL (Ph.D.)****
frenzydude replied to oboeking4314's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Being very optimistic, I would have chosen Cornell without thinking twice and I am happy you did that. I don't think it would much of a problem to continue to PhD there if you are in good standing. -

My rudest rejection letter was from UToronto. It goes : I regret to advise you that we are unable to offer you admission and realize this news will be a disappointment to you. We received a large number of applications and were only able to offer admission to a limited number of the most highly qualified applicants. You will receive official notification by the regular postal service. First of all, it clearly states that I am not good enough and even though they feel 'disappointed' about it, they are enjoying sending me a rejection letter by post for memorabilia!

toss a coin. sometimes that's the best way I have tried it on many decisions.

You maybe right but that's mostly a personal choice. I know a professor who did his PhD at MIT and is now a professor in Germany, as well a professor who did his PhD in CMU and is a professor at Caltech however, is shifting to ETH Zurich. Both of them are German natives.

Admissions for 2011, Are they taking less students???
frenzydude replied to csperson's topic in Computer Science
I totally agree. From my institute, last year people got great offers with fellowships at many places which encouraged me to app higher. However, this year, the situation has been much worse with lesser number of admits and even lesser funding. -
ETH Zurich is ranked higher i think. It depends on whether you are getting funded at some place (and how much) or you have a location preference, or there is a certain research group at one of these where you have to go. If all of these are No's I would go to ETH. I think UBC MSc is fully funded, and ETH also has some scholarship or something.

I could do a paid internship or something, or maybe try for something like the Google Summer of Code, but I think I will just enjoy my couple of months time at home before leaving for grad school in the US.

How much money did you spend on your graduate school applications?
frenzydude replied to chaospaladin's topic in The Lobby
About 2000$ for 11 applications. Will get it back in the first month's graduate stipend.
