let the admission brags begin! dont vote until all applications have been officially replied.

I doubt it, I have not heard ANYTHING at all from them and I know people have been accepted and visited Akron. seems really wacky =/

my grades were quite mediocure (3.45 overall), even my psych gpa wasn't perfect. but I make up for it with quality research experience and a really high GRE. you just have to be what they are looking for. meaning, your experience should tell them if you are fit for college, just be you, you can't lie to them because then you won't like it at all. basically, if getting the credentials necessary for grad school isn't enjoyable for you, then the 4-6 years of grad school will not be enjoyable for you. don't try to get the credentials just to get in a grad school. its a little abstract but hope this make some sense. lets put it this way, none of the things I did as an undergrad (well minus studying for GRE) I wouldn't have done if I wasn't applying for grad school. if you constantly find yourself doing things because "it will make me a competitive applicant", rather than "I really enjoy this", then you might want to rethink grad school. went a little off topic, but bottom line is this. Do the things your curious about, and if in the end, you find yourself thinking, "I'm a pretty good applicant for grad school", then apply.

yea programming is one of the few skill sets that the cog people will say they really like. because it really saves a TON of training they have to do. it could be C++, VB, Python whatever, its just a really nice skillset to have. I know here, a lot of labs use e-prime and its a nice software but people that can write codes and actually program will make much better use of it. I think, if there is one skillset that can actually make you standout as a grad applicant, it would be programming skills.

this is pretty useless as I already made my decision, but I have not heard one thing from Akron, no rejection no nothing. I got the email that they got my application so I don't think there is an error in that. not so important now anyways.

BGSU is having interview this weekend.

Unsolicited advice from the 2010-2011 admissions cohort
honkycat1 replied to HyacinthMacaw's topic in Psychology Forum
Do not attempt to make any predictions about the outcome of the process. Its as random as it gets, you can't go in thinking "here are my safety schools and here are my long shots" because from my experience. I got waitlist/interviewed by 2 of my "long shots" and rejected by some of my best fit programs. -
Saik, though I'm not planning on this, want to thanks for all the info! great stuff for the forum.

I'm going to agree with you and add that, a clinical PhD program are not interested in people that just want to treat everyday people with disorders. I suggest ab2844 to find something more specific that hes interested, it could be anxiety, or depression. I suggest you talk to some clinical professors or PhD students, from the sounds of it, you don't really know what your getting yourself into. Also, a lot of program will not even look at you if all you want to do is treat people. (I'm talking about PhD programs). You have to understand PhD is a Research driven degree that focuses on advancement of knowledge, not treating patients necessarily, at least not major research institutions. Smaller liberal arts schools will have more opportunities like treating patients but you need to do the research. Either way, they are looking for people with more of a focus than just treat every day people that may or may not have serious problems. I don't mean to be harsh but graduate school is very competitive, you need to convey that you know what your getting yourself into and your a good fit.

No email, no interview, what kind of sign is this?

a lot of grad programs don't depend on the specialization... and it depends, if the applications was turned in on the Dec 1st batch, then your probably out. If they are the Jan.1 batch, then you still have a glimps of hope but 80% your at MOST on the waiting list at this point. but don't take my word for it this is just bsaed on the 8 schools I applied to. Basically, if they want to admit you, you would know by now. -
not necessarily psychometrics, there is a lot of work in probabilty modeling done with math psych people. and more and more people are getting into bayesian stuff too... there is an annual conference for math psych, you should check out the website and the journal to see what kind of work is done there. Our lab actually has a grad student and a postdoc that both presented at the math psych and we are a cogntive lab that does no psychometrics... mostly modeling.

just like to say, it becomes exponentially harder to find motivation to apply for a PhD program especially after a few years in the work force.
-
obviously it is... I don't even know why people take this Mr."I only apply to schools because of their name" seriously... whatever, if not for these applicants, I would not get in any schools... and I'm actually offended by your statement that you just want an ivey league school... its snobby, pretentious people like you that give real academics a bad name, and give people that actually go to those schools to do real work a bad name.
-
yes you did clearly say "not so much", and its also false. so before you act like a smartass, get your facts straight. 600+ verbal can get you into the best research PhD programs.
-
hmm is there a waiting list for them to "offer more" and are those people being contacted to be aware of that?
-
while on the topic of rankings... what is the general opinion on rankings? I mean, most ranking systems rank schools on research productivity, but I think other things like job placements are equally important. Also, a program with new and motivated researchers might also be a plus.

Ok decision scientists out there, anyone applied to any MOB programs??? The only one I applied to was Chicago Booth (wait listed), they have excellent researchers in decision stuff and behavioral economics, and most come from psychology.

thanks its I'm sure its around the corner anyone hear/know anything about Akron?????
-

Statistical Programs used in psych research
honkycat1 replied to SarahSocPsy's topic in Psychology Forum
SPSS is pretty common and everyone knows it, even undergraduate research method courses teaches SPSS. In terms of statistical analysis, R is free and a open source software that a lot of people use. It has a lot of cool packages etc. our lab uses matlab for some stuff too, and modeling but some of its function is moving away from the standard "analysis". I don't know how many people uses excel for its macro and VBA functions, I think its pretty cool in terms of making some nice user interfaces with its forms function and a little bit of coding. our lab actually run some studies using some stuff I programed from VBA in excel. -
yes I emailed the person that emailed me the invite.

Basically: BGSU has 4 spots, they gave out 5 initial offers + 4 on the shortlist for interview.
