  1. I'm waiting on UBC too. It's my last school to hear from. The email they sent out in late January said they would notify before April 1st, so I'm guessing we could hear from them any time during the next two weeks or so.
  2. I didn't join Sigma Tau Delta until I was an MA student (as my undergraduate school didn't have it there). If your school has a Sigma Tau Delta, it should be available at both the undergrad and graduate level.
  3. I'm into 19th century American literature as well. I really like the "Legacy" journal put out by the Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW). Of course this journal is for women writers so if you're interested in that, take a look. They also have a website and yearly conferences. http://public.wsu.edu/~campbelld/ssaww/index.html
  4. I applied to Washington last year as well. Yes, they have the strangest rejection letter I`ve ever seen. But at least they don`t reject you twice like some universities. Last year, they sent acceptances and rejections out in batches throughout March so there really is no set time. Here is an article about how they make their decisions: http://arcade.stanford.edu/how-narrow-enough Good luck, everyone.
  5. I just saw an acceptance on the board. Does anyone want to claim it? Congratulations and if you have any information, please share.
  6. I received an email from one of my schools. My heart stopped and I opened it right away only to find that it was a school newsletter from the graduate studies program. Schools shouldn't be allowed to send out newsletters before or during the decision period. It's just too cruel.
  7. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Luckily, I was reading this for fun so I had the option to put it down halfway through and sell it off on Amazon.
  8. This is completely off topic, but can someone please tell me how to get the "warn status" bar off. I've tried everything in settings and I can't figure it out.
  9. You team teach English classes with another Japanese teacher to elementary, junior high, or high school students (depends where they assign you. I got an unusual assignment and teach all grade levels). You need to have completed a BA at least to apply. You have to be 40 years old or under. http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/JET/
  10. I know ... This is my second time applying and I got my first rejection for this round yesterday. I'm afraid that it will be another tidal wave of rejections this year and am trying to stay hopeful. Good luck everyone and congratulations to those who already got in.
  11. You could teach English abroad in a foreign country. Gives you a chance to see a different side of the world but also get paid at the same time. Looks good on your CV too as you will have some teaching experience under your belt.
  12. I'm in the JET program right now and am really enjoying it. If anyone has questions, let me know.
  13. One graduate director I talked to last year (UNR) said that he likes to make calls of acceptances on Saturdays because people are home. Unfortunately, there is no day where you can relax with this process.
  14. Like lolopixie said, it depends on the school. Some universities don't mind if you got your bachelors/MA in another discipline while others specifically state that you have to have an undergraduate or masters degree in English. There are some programs that combine film studies with english, so you may want to check those out as well. One of my mentor professors got her bachelors degree in math and she went to an ivy league school for her English MA/Ph.D. so it is possible. You can use the list of schools on the results board to help you research programs. Good luck!
  15. I had to write a teaching SOP for one of my schools as well: Some quesitons to consider: What did you learn during your time as a TA? Can you describe your teaching methodology? What do you hope for yourself as a future teacher? You can also google search "teaching philosophy" and a lot of examples will come up - that might give you some ideas. Good luck.
