  1. Yeah, I think it's okay to be direct here.
  2. Sounds promising! you should definitely contact them to check your status. Good luck!
  3. I think it depends on your specific field within communication. I'd be interested in hearing what others had to say as well. In the meantime, Here's the link to the NCA Doctoral Reputation Study if you haven't seen it.
  4. I would say it means waitlist or rejection. I noticed on the results page that acceptances and rejections had gone out for one of the schools I applied to. I contacted the department and asked my status. They informed me that my application was still "active" and they were waiting to hear back from other candidates before they decided on my application. It's a waitlist essentially.
  5. I agree with the previous poster. Focus on your fit! Other than that, some questions I've used are: Do faculty generally work in collaborative research projects or is it more individualized with occasional collaboration? Do students have the opportunity to work with faculty on projects/papers? Do you see the department expanding into any new research areas in the next few years? In which concentrations/research areas do the bulk of the energy and research go? Are there any upcoming grant-funding projects?
  6. I did my MA at SIT but in a different program. They focus a lot on building practical, on the ground skills. Alumni are working all over the place in sustainable development.
  7. This happened to me so I emailed the program. That basically told me I was waitlisted. Apparently this particular program goes out with a first string of offers, sends out the rejections, and doesn't contact the other pool of applicants until they know what their first string is doing. I would email the program and ask what your status was.
  8. I sent you a pm. Good luck!
  9. I haven't heard anything since emailing and getting the response from them on Thursday. There was no indication of when I might hear from them again. It said they "were waiting to hear back from other applicants before making a decision" on mine. you might email them to see what your status is. It doesn't seem like they tell you your waitlisted unless you ask. It sounds like they contacted acceptances and rejections but not waitlisters.
  10. Thanks for the info! I'm actually talking to both of them when I visit. I'm looking forward to it. The more I hear about the program, the more intrigued I become!
  11. I've heard that! I'll let you know in a couple weeks. I'm looking forward to learning about the program and city!
  12. I'm currently in a holding pattern with both my top choices. I'm waitlisted at Umass and UW-Seattle. I'm in at U of Denver and I'm going to check it out. It's my third choice at the moment behind the other two. Anyone else out there dealing with the agony of waitlists? I'm guessing that I won't know anything until the dreaded April 15th. I'm trying to stay optimistic but this is stressful!

  14. I got waitlisted at my top choice and I didn't know until I emailed them two weeks after they admitted people. Still waiting....
  15. You should go and network. I'm an introvert who hates networking, but it's the name of the game. Google some advice for networking at conferences and pick up a few tips. Ask lots of questions of people about their experiences. (People generally like talking about their experiences and research). I got invited to the same thing, but unfortunately I live VERY far away!
  16. I did the same and got the same response!
  17. I applied to 6 programs and had to send 6 different transcripts to each program (some programs also required two copies) for a grand total of $323!!! I have so many transcripts because I have my BA, MA, two undegrad study abroad transcripts, a summer class at another school, and an online class at another school. One of my study abroad transcripts was $25 each! Geez! It was a brutal affront to my credit card! Ouch!
  18. Education is a process not simply an end goal. My mother got her BA at 57 and her MA at 60. She did this because she loved to learn and enjoyed being in an academic environment. Age and experience can enrich a department and I do not see it as a detriment. It only adds to the diversity of experience and prospective. Props to you for pursuing your goal despite adversity!
  19. I got my first rejection on the day that I passed my black belt test in karate.
  20. Hey Commtome--I emailed the department today. I'll let you know if I hear anything back!
  21. Yes! I don't think it would hurt to briefly outline how your interests align and that you are still very interested in the program despite your waitlist status.
  22. Just checking to see if anyone else has heard from Umass? I've heard nothing and it seems that they've sent out some acceptances and rejections. Anyone else in limbo?
