  1. abluedude - I'd love to talk to you about the intersection of grad school and mortgages - would you mind PMing or emailing me? You don't seem to have a PM button on your posts. Thanks!
  2. Booksareneat is absolutely right, but it's not the big deal you might think it is: it turns out the earth has already been destroyed by the LHC. http://qntm.org/?board
  3. I'm fairly certain I'll be in Tucson - it's my only funded offer so far. I'm still waiting on one more school, and am waitlisted at another, but I think UA's offer is going to be hard to beat. I live in Seattle right now, so the cost of living looks great in Tucson, but I'm a little worried about the heat. Has anyone had a chance to research neighborhoods yet?
  4. Did anyone get a funded offer from Boulder? MA or PhD? If you're comfortable sharing them, will you please post or PM details? Thanks!
  5. Assuming my last few fall through, I'm with you. Maybe we could move off-forum to an email group, if people are willing - that way some of us (those who are me, at least) might feel a little better about being specific with our information? We can always make up new hotmail accounts for it.
  6. Yes, UT's wait list is done by field, so Guenevere's decision is unlikely to affect my wait list status. I suppose places with ranked wait lists must just arrange people on them with a variety of interests to avoid letting four medievalists in at once? I know it's been said before, but this whole process is crazy.
  7. My approach is similar to Comfect's - I'm really only posting here so I don't lose track of this thread. I'm hampered by not being affiliated with a University at the moment, which means I can't do nearly enough research in my pajamas. Hopefully that will change soon.
  8. Spritely, hush! I'm on the wait list at UT. Please tell all admitted students that it's a terrible place, and potentially haunted by the owner of the amusement park in a sea monster mask.
  9. I'm wondering whether those getting phone calls are getting funding offers - I know they don't fund everyone.
  10. Orin, I also haven't gotten my rejection, although I live quite a bit further from Chicago. In my case, though, I doubt it means I've got an MA offer coming - UChi was probably the worst fit of any of the places I applied. (But then, what do I know? Two of my "perfect fit" schools rejected me...) Gah! Just tell me already!
  11. This is just to say I have guzzled the vodka that was in the freezer and which you were probably saving for lemon drops Forgive me it eased my pain so sharp and so cold (apologies to William Carlos Williams, who did it much better)
  12. It sounds like what you want is a wiki - reasonably easy to set up, but you get all the downsides of user-generated content (as we see daily on the results page). It's a pretty great idea, though, if someone can devote the time to set-up and monitoring.
  13. Oh no ... I was doing so well, being calm and patient, but Minnesota is my top choice - I think I'm going to be sick if this process drags out.
  14. Egregious handkerchief defenestrated ____direct object________
  15. Just because I'm tired of reading "Has anyone heard from..." threads. Post your vaguely identifying details here! What is your focus? Where have you applied? MLA or Chicago (or APA for you interdisciplinary types)? No fair lying, but feel free to give vague or partial answers. PM those in your field for bribery or smack-talk, depending on their/your wait list status. My focus is the long 19th century, transnational. So far I've been wait-listed at UT Austin and rejected from Stanford, UPenn, and Princeton. I'm waiting on the inevitable Berkeley rejection. Five more to go after that. I'm almost afraid to say it, but I think the Chicago Style Guide is far superior to MLA. Unspeakable
  16. Ooh, forum game! Post your best rejection LOL!
  17. Is anyone else still waiting on a decision? I saw a bunch of rejections and acceptances, but my status still says it's being reviewed.
  18. For those of you who have found your decisions on Embark or Apply Yourself-based apps, where did you find it? Does a new section appear once the decision is available? I've been keeping an eye on the message center section in Apply Yourself, but so far there's nothing there. Thanks for any help.
  19. That's exactly what I was told; several people told me not to let on about having a child until after everything was signed. I've also heard that it's different for men - they can afford to be a lot more open about having children. Some days it really seems that we haven't come very far at all, doesn't it?
  20. From Penn: Things do seem to be starting, but I don't think this is The Week by any means.
  21. Heh - mine has started to do that too, but when he stops to tell us to stop talking, he loses track of what he was saying and trails off. It's usually really funny, although the waiting is making me less patient than I normally am.
  22. All Ramones, all the time. I'm not sure it's really calming me down while I wait, though.
