  1. Congrats and welcome to GW. Make sure you check this website (http://gwoffcampus.com/) if you are seeking roommate(s).
  2. I have two accepted papers in two different conferences which happen to be held at the same time. The papers must be presented for them to be published in the proceedings. I'll will attend one conference and I was wondering if I can register for the other one but ask a colleague of mine who is neither an author nor a registrant of the conference to present it. Is this permissible? Did any of you girls/guys try this before?
  3. Hey Sarahmarie, I live in Foggy Bottom but I know couple of friends who live by Virgina Square metro and they love it there. I also heard good reviews about Clarendon and Court House neighborhoods.
  4. My only issue so far is my adviser's age. When I accepted the offer I did not realize that he would be that old. I always think about what would happen to my funding if he gets ill or maybe worse. He is the kindest adviser ever but it just bothers me.
  5. Good question. I'm developing mathematical models. To test my models, I just need some crude data for quick verification. I scan the scientific papers for such data. When I get good primary results, I contact the author for the original data and maybe putting something together for publishing. Don't worry, no frauds here.
  6. I'm using two open-source apps to digitize the data from plots and graphs. The number of digitized points is not as much as I want and it is kinda manual to do the whole process. Does anyone know of a decent software to do the job automatically?
  7. Guys, I'm moving to the US in few days and I find the plans/packages so confusing. I'm not a phone guy, I don't talk much, however, I use my iPhone extensively over the internet. So, ideally, I would prefer a Pay for the go plan for the voice/messages and an unlimited plan for the data, does such configuration exist?
  8. Hey! I've grown up in a developing country where pirated software and media is not a big deal and it naturally became a part of my work. I'm moving in few days to the US and someone advised me to get rid of all of the pirated content on my laptop. Now, I really wanna stop using such things but I need a transitional period, I can't just throw them all away in a moment, I use them on a daily basis. My question is how dangerous/illegal it is to have few movies and couple of pirated software on my work laptop? Did any of you keep at least one software that he couldn't pay for and find it indispensable for his work? Some might find my questions redundant, but believe me it's hard to change what you've been doing your whole life. Cheers,
  9. This is an awesome thread! .. Thank you guys!
  10. My interview was today. It was very smooth and I was told my visa got approved. Now waiting for the DHL shipment!
  11. Did anyone manage to find an apartment/room yet? I find it greatly overwhelming. So many resources and it's hard to decide especially that I won't be able to check the apartment. I'm moving-in mid August. If you know of anyone requesting roommate(s) please let me know!
  12. Hi, I'll be heading to Washington DC next fall for a PhD in GWU. This would be my first time to visit the states, my first time to live alone and my first time to search & browse housing options. Let's say that I searched and looked everywhere and finally decided on a neighborhood that fits my budget and my likings for the surroundings, now what's next? .. What if I find a place/roommate that is appealing to me on Craigslist or else? Is there a deposit? Is it safe to pay it online? .. Can someone advice on this issue please?
  13. I am international too and yes it is going to be difficult but it's inevitable. I have been searching GWU off-campus housing ( http://gradlife.gwu.edu/OffCampusHousing/ ). You should also check the student associations (depending on your nationality, ethnic group, ... ). I found a very helpful association with housing listings and roommates requests.

    McGill Vs GWU

Congrats to you too, hasseye. Thank you! I'll pm you my stats. I'm coming from MS, well I haven't technically finished yet.
  15. You MUST look for off-campus housing. Shared places can be around 600~800$ if far about 6~9 miles of campus.
  16. Cool! No one going for PhD .. Hmmm I haven't started looking for housing yet. Just exploring the area and asking about safe and young-spirited neighborhoods. Anyone of you guys started looking for housing?
  17. I was in the same situation yesterday. I chose the bird in hand although the one in the bush was of more preferable research topic. I couldn't risk it.

    McGill Vs GWU

Nope, I got a tuition award + 18k RA stipend + 1k for health insurance. So after taxes and everything I'll have a net of 15~16k per year to live on. I don't have friends/relatives in DC, but I'm talking with a a student association there that might help. I'm from Egypt and this will be my first visit to USA/Canada.

    McGill Vs GWU

Thank you! They are offering 19k. I think I can manage with this amount. I'll just have to live a bit far from the campus.
  20. I posted this in "Decisions" board, I think it's better posted in this board. Yet another topic asking for your opinion. I'm applying for PhD in Electrical Engineering starting Fall 2011. I have two offers so far: 1) McGill, offered only a stipend from the professor. The stipend roughly covers the tuition fees which means I have to fund my living expenses. 2) GWU offered full funding. Now, McGill is much better in terms of ranking/reputation when it comes to Engineering than GWU. However, the professor assigned to me from GWU is a legendary renowned scientist. What do you think guys? What would you do? I myself am leaning towards GWU, because I won't feel the stresses of self-funding and so. Hmmm

  22. Anyone going to GWU this fall? I received an offer from ECE for a PhD. I'm tending to accept it. I'll be relocating from Egypt.
  23. I have one offer in hand. I was counting on April 15th to hear from 5 universities to decide on the best but I heard nothing. The deadline to accept the one offer I have is April 22. Ugh!
  24. Anyone studying in or been to GWU can give us some info about where is the best place to live?
