  1. Since you are New Genres, and IF you don't get into LB, check out these schools next year for new genres and media: Cali schools: - UCSD (apply again! Why not...) - SDSU (a hidden gem: good prog, great gallery spaces, and I think there is good funding) - SJSU / cadre (I believe there is good funding) - Mills / intermedia (good funding) - UCSB (amazing funding, full ride+) - UC Berkeley (full tuition ride for instate peeps, out of state peeps, pay difference in tuition the first year) - UCLA / d-ma (excellent funding) - UC Davis (decent funding) - SFSU (funding is minimal if at all) Others: - ASU (awesome funding; full ride's avail.) - Univ of Chicago (excellent funding) - RPI / elec arts (I believe this is a full ride) - Northwestern (terrific funding; full ride+) - UTex-Austin (good funding) - SAIC / art & tech and film & media (awful funding) - Alfred (awesome funding; full ride+) - RISD / D+M (crappy funding) - MIT / ACT (mediocre funding) ...even if you don't feel you are an "electronic arts" person, the crossover with new genres is consistently being blurred nowadays, so it's good to apply. Good Luck!!!
  2. I was notified 02/08 via email that I would be interviewed (I chose to do it in person). They did all the interviews for media arts MFA in one day (about 14 of us), yesterday.
  3. Rejection letter from Berkeley. Boo. Really liked that program... But, interview at UCLA (media arts) on Fri was awesome. People there were very very nice and accommodating, and I even got to hang out with the department head and a couple of my media art heroes unofficially. I really like UCLA.
  4. That's too bad man, it's a solid program with epic funding...
  5. Yes, I got into UCSB sans interview, but have ones with two other schools...I think you can expect people to be quick with their questions, but quite courteous and even nice. I think the questions are pretty straight forward: Why did you approach the problem this way? What were you thinking when you used this or that material? Who are some of the artists you feel the greatest affinity with (dropping the correct name of a work or works you like in particular helps as well)? The timing can range to maybe five minutes over "regulation" if the conversation is flowing...generally, it's been a good experience, so don't sweat it! If you get one prof or grad student that pummels you (I have heard of this happening, but have not experienced it...yet), just stick to being calm and answer to the best of your ability...they'll probably be more interested in HOW you respond, rather than looking for a right or wrong answer...good luck!!
  6. For anyone applying to RISD D+M, my good friend has his first-round interview this coming Tuesday
  7. Yes, the insider perspective was (is) excellent, no doubt! And, I, personally, have long been a fan of the program... In the end, this tit-for-tat unfortunately became a bit heated, but the word "dismal" was indeed applied to the applicants' work being submitted...this is plainly clear in the first post. Regardless, it is terrific to hear someone give the love to this program because it certainly does not get enough!
  8. Totally understand! NYC will do you well...did you apply to Columbia too? I really like Thomas Roma's work... EDIT: (you applying for photo?) Yeah, Pope.L is the man...really nice guy as well and, wow, that "crawl" piece he did...amazing. He had some terrific questions that made me look at my work differently. Enjoyed the experience for sure. Best of luck on the interview!
  9. Awesome! That seems like a terrific program, and continuing to live in that city doing more art is an added super bonus....hope you snag it for sure.
  10. Yeah, I have to agree that that post comes across as a bit conceited, but I'm sure JC didn't mean it in that way...but, it would be tough to get all of that in line as flights from the West coast to London aren't cheap. JC - just tell Hunter, if they want to interview you, what your situation is and I'm sure they'd be happy to phone/Skype you in...and, mind your post's wording, as it is an "emotionally charged" atmosphere on this site due to obvious reasons! <3
  11. Rejectamundo from Northwestern! Here's hoping my interview at UCLA kicks butt Best of luck to all this week on acceptances/interviews!
  12. Absolutely agree...I didn't even bother to apply to any school that didn't offer at least 60+%.
  13. Hahaha, it is like something out of HP, right? Indeed, there are a number of venues (like the Ren Soc) that tie into the school, and I really enjoyed talking to their excellent profs (I interviewed with Profs. Sullivan and William Pope.L)...all very nice too. Lol, no, it's not literally part of the Ivy League, but academically it certainly is at the top of the heap (with Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford out west) I think you are quite right that it's awesome for new genres/Interdis. more so than painters, etc. That certainly seemed to be the case for the students I met in the program
  14. Just got back from my interview at Univ of Chicago...though not "ranked" uber high, there are some excellent profs and the new Logan Center for the Arts that is being finished is going to propel this program into big player status over the next decade (i.e., the University's commitment to the arts in general, and the MFA program in particular, esp. with the unbelievable resources that will now be available to the program)...very impressive. http://arts.uchicago.edu/logan/
  15. I have an interview for UCLA media arts MFA, but though it's in the same school of arts, I'll bet the regular MFA has a different schedule...should be coming soon! Good luck No problem, good points!
  16. Really? I've heard of places interviewing as few as 12...I'm sure it depends on the program (and how many slots they have). Was that 25 for Cal Arts or CCA? either way, those are both excellent schools so they'll get at least half of their choices sticking around. Especially after any horse trading on funding that might happen.
  17. I think ANY school would be happy to see somebody apply again if they had been rejected before...but, I highly doubt schools willy-nilly reject people and then expect the person to apply again the next year. I have heard of this kind of thing said elsewhere, and it seems like one of those urban tales: "Oh, we reject people the first time and we know they'll apply again because we know they want to go here so badly". That would be a foolish and easy way to lose good candidates.
