  1. I certainly hope she gets in. But, applying to only four schools (and two are very elite) is taking a chance...regardless, best of luck!
  2. Paintcutter, it looks like you are applying to only four schools (judging from what you list in your Signature), and three of them are quite difficult to get into (actually, two of them are next to "impossible"). You should look around at more "second tier" schools around the nation, and a lot of them are fully funded...I see a lot of people going for mainly the big names and it's too bad...missing chances.
  3. Nope. I showed my Statement to some big-time crit people and they said avoid crit speak like the plague. Just straight-forward and to the point, is what they said they like to see on the Statements when they are reading them.
  4. Merci! Bonne chance à vous dans votre processus de demande ainsi! J'espère que vous entrez dans une école que vous voulez vraiment. Aimez-vous le programme de M.A. à la Sorbonne? (Pardonnez-moi ma mauvaise grammaire française!)
  5. SD's art scene is ok, but nothing liek LA's of course. Many of the peeps that are doing their MFAs show in LA, but of course it's all about making your own connections...the Open Studios for UCSD (Google that for links) has some gallery and museum people come down so there's always some kind of opportunity. The traffic is no problem here...I lived in LA for five years and that makes any other form of traffic seem like a joke
  6. Just got an interview/short list for the Univ of Chicago MFA in Feb...(hint to other schools: let's get this ball rolling!)
  7. I am currently at UCSD and many of my pals are MFAs there...it is an excellent program with great professors such as Anya Gallacio, Lev Manovich, Heim Steinbach, Teddy Cruz and others. Are there any particular questions you have about that school? Let me know.
  8. Good luck on UCSD. I'm there as an UG right now, but , being older, I have a bunch of MFA friends in the program. Hit me up if you'd like to chat offline about the program. It's a terrific dept.
  9. Indeed, UCLA (DMA) is top notch. Also, I am an undergrad at UCSD and I've studied with awesome "new media" people such as Lev Manovich, Benjamin Bratton, and other less well-known, but equally interesting media practitioners such as Brett Stalbaum and Ricardo Dominguez. Also, Teddy Cruz is another big name...anyway, UCSD is an option as well and it's fully funded. Other than that there is, SAIC's Art and Tech program, MIT ACT program, Carn-Mellon, UW, Harvard GSD (MDes), Univ Illinois Chicago (EVL lab, former), UCSB, etc...there's a bunch right up your (and my!) alley
  10. In response to SYMPATICO: "I like Chicago quite a lot but I have no intention of living their long term and I have heard it is quite a faculty mill + more expensive than places like Yale and less selective. No thanks." SAIC is an awesome place and Chicago is an awesome town...as far as provincial-seeming and having a hermetically-sealed like "faculty mill", Yale is easily just as notorious (i.e., esp. the photo peeps). Plus, your chances of getting into a top-flight art school like SAIC are much better than Yale, so why not apply? Such judgement as what you've heard elsewhere seems ill-advised...judging from a purely probabilistic standpoint (admissions), I'd blow off Yale long before SAIC in a heart beat...I mean, SAIC is second only to Yale in certain rankings for painting anyway! It'd be foolish to not apply (if you are looking at highly ranked programs that aren't well funded)... Also, the location is really more important for where you'd like to live for 2-3 years for your program. Professionally, it is a misconception that you'll get stuck in this or that place. There are artists from all schools in all big metro areas working/making art.
  11. 1-2 pages max (300-600 words total). I wouldn't tax your potential readers with anything more than that. Remember, they have hundreds of these things to read, so keep them short and to-the-point.
  12. Got the same email from Victoria at Davis...yes, call her, email her, do whatever. You have 53 minutes
  13. Sweeeeet. Sent off all the apps, now time to wait for the circus to come to town. Good luck to all...
