  3. Hi there. Coming from a background of Ethnic Studies as an undergrad, I too was very concerned about this. From what I can tell, almost all of the top ranked, more established programs are very strong in quantitative research methods. That's not to say, however, that they don't put an emphasis on qualitative research -- they do. It's just that from what I can see, more of the higher ranked programs have older, more statistics based faculty members, whereas more of the mid-to-high tier programs tend take a more progressive approach to sociology. This often times involves faculty who rely more on qualitative or mixed methods research. I had this dilemma when I had to choose between a higher ranked, more quantitative research based program (Indiana) versus and slightly lesser ranked, more diverse program (Minnesota). What I didn't realize at the time of applying was how much the rank of the programs affects your chances of employment after graduating (a considerable amount, btw). In the end, I went with the program I was more comfortable with. It also didn't hurt that they offered me more money.
  4. I will attend the University of Minnesota. Deciding Factors: faculty, location, funding.

Just declined my offer. I hope you're the next off the waiting list!
  6. The Funding package was a little more than $14,000/yr for 4 years. That amount does not include summers. The student fees + health insurance were ~$900 a semester, so ~$1800 for the regular school year. I was also offered a one time fellowship of $1000. Hope that helps.

finally got an email linking to my rejection letter. took them long enough!!
  8. Also, one professor I was talking to asked how much schools were awarding me for stipends. When I gave her the figures she was utterly shocked, saying that she was given the same amount, if not more, when she attended graduate school over 15 years ago.
  9. Am I blind or is University of Minnesota not on that list?
  10. Anyone visit the department yet? If so, how did it go? Anyone plan on visiting soon?
  11. I declined admission today so hopefully it opens up a slot for someone on the wait list. Maybe it'll be you!
  12. I've been to two campus visits so far and nearly all the grad students and faculty members I spoke with asked me this question. I was also asked the question during a phone interview. At first, I was slightly taken aback. I kept thinking, "should I be telling them this? What could they possibly do with this information?" But after being asked so many times, I figured it was just common practice. Now if anyone asks, I just list the schools without any hesitation. Ofcourse, I always tell the person that his/her school is one of my top choices.
  13. So, I just received this e-mail from SUNY Albany on my phone while I was out grocery shopping. I briefly skimmed it and came to the conclusion that I was on a wait list. But after coming home and re-evaluating the e-mail, I'm not so sure anymore. Anyone else receive this e-mail? Can someone interpret this for me? "Dear xxxxxxx, The Graduate Admissions Committee has finished completing our review of applicant files, and we were very impressed with your application. Unfortunately, due to the current budget situation facing the University at Albany, we were forced to dramatically reduce the number of assistantships we can offer this year. We have placed you in the top group of our waiting list for funding. We should have more information after March 27, and we hope to be able to be in touch shortly thereafter with more information about your application status. I am sorry not to be able to provide more definitive information to you. In an ordinary year, we would most certainly have offered you a full tuition scholarship and assistantship with stipend. We are still hopeful that we will be able to do so this year, but in the meantime I think it is only fair that we be fully transparent about our situation and your status."
  14. I have had nothing but trouble with my application for that program. At first, they said I was missing my application fee, which I paid on the day I turned my application in. They sent me 3 letters, all to my permanent address and not my current address, and it took weeks to get it resolved. Then I get a letter a week ago (again to my permanent address) saying that they were missing one of my transcripts, which makes no sense because I personally mailed all transcripts in one large envelope. UGH.
  15. Hey Sparkle. I was the one who posted the UConn acceptance. In my haste, I mistakenly wrote that UConn was offering 5 years of funding. After re-reading the letter, it seems like they are only willing to offer me guaranteed funding for my first year. I am not sure and will have to e-mail them about that. Anyway, it came via e-mail on the the 5th. They mentioned that they had students on a wait list so they'd appreciate a quick response. Hope that helps.

I agree with you synthla; LA is probably overall much more dangerous than any city in Indiana. That said, I lived in LA for most of my life and feel much more at ease there than I do in areas of little to no racial diversity. A lot of that probably has to do with the fact that I am not White. Also, I figure that race-related violence is going to be a given in any major metropolitan area that is as diverse as LA. I think race inspired shootings in LA are of a much different variant than the ones that occur in more rural-White dominated areas. Just my $0.02. Don't mean to beat a dead horse or open up a can of worms.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into visiting. Maybe I can borrow some money from my parents to visit. The family friend is around 40 yrs old, so I figure the event occurred some 10-15 years ago.
  18. I just came back from a recruitment day at UIC. All in all it was a great experience and I learned a lot about the program and graduate school in general. Hopefully I can answer a few of your questions. 1) The dept paired me up with one of the grad students and I stayed at his apt for 2 nights. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but it ended up being fine. I think this really helps because you get a small sense of how the housing situation is like in the area. In retrospect, I wish I would have bought a bottle of wine or a something to give to my host because he was awesome. 2) I brought clothes, laptop, Nintendo DS, phone/mp3 player, some reading material, and a notepad. I ended up only needing the clothes, phone, and reading material. 3) I was at the recruitment day with other students in my potential cohort. 4) Basically, talking is the only thing that happens during the time there. I'm pretty sure I explained my interest to faculty members and grad students at least 15 times. When you're not talking, some one else is. You get told about the city, the program, funding, and pretty much anything else you want to know. It is exhausting. haha 5) The school paid for everything. I ended up spending less than $20 during the 2.5 days I was at Chicago. 6) Have an idea of what your interests are because you'll be explaining them often. Also, have a list of questions that you can ask grad students/faculty. No one dressed to impress. Nearly everyone there was wearing a pair of jeans. I'm not saying you can't dress nicely if you really want to, but you'll likely stand out.

I was informed today that I was admitted! I am very excited because IUB is closest to my girlfriend's school in terms of proximity (OSU) and is also a great program in itself. The only thing I'm slightly worried is the racial prejudice; not in Bloomington, but the areas surrounding the school. I have a family friend who had a female colleague shot and killed by KKK while he was completing his Master's degree there. I know I'm being paranoid, but I can't help but worry. It doesn't help that the female student and I are of the same nationality.
  20. I really think it depends on what you're visiting for. If you're there to impress the faculty and grad students (ie. interview), then it's probably in your best interest to dress somewhat formally. I've been told (from the grad students who I will be staying with) that dressing in jeans and a nice shirt/blouse should be more than enough. After all, they're the ones trying to recruit you, not the other way around.

Could you please tell me how the visit goes? I'd love to visit the campus (if I get in, that is) but funds are a bit tight. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
  22. I was lucky enough to be nominated by a mentor to present at an undergraduate research conference at UCSD. I presented my thesis in roundtable discussion form (a few faculty members + other presenters). Basically, each presenter had 15 minutes to summarize or draw from an excerpt of his/her thesis. I was allowed access to a computer for Powerpoint slides. After my presentation, people at the table would ask me questions about my topic and we discuss finer points. UCSD Faculty members would often give constructive criticism (nothing too negative) and suggest topics for further research. Overall, it was a great, yet nerve-racking experience. Good luck to you!
  23. Also, you may want to take into account the high cost of living in Westwood and its vicinity. A studio apartment can cost well north of $1,000 a month. Also keep in mind that SoCal probably has the highest avg. gas prices in the US along with mediocre public transit (although the Downtown LA public transit is not too bad). $15,000 certainly isn't a small amount of money, but you'll be surprised at how quickly that could disappear, especially in a town like LA. You should definitely try negotiating, especially if you get a better offer from another program.

Same here... as a super senior though. And thanks Tritone! Hope you hear from them soon.
