  1. I am definitely into mixed methods, although I need to gain a lot more expertise in stats (I am working on it). My honors thesis uses quantitative survey data and qualitative interview data.
  2. Have you made your decision about Wisconsin yet Chuck? Also I was wondering about the funding. Does that include TA/RA or will the years with TA/RA give you $$$ on top of the stipend?
  3. Boulder is on the rise for environmental sociology.
  4. Oh I apologize. You paraphrased and summarized a dead white male instead of thinking for yourself, congrats. Guess what? No one is objective, not even in the hard sciences. Come back once you've figured that out.
  5. I find it enlightening you felt the need to quote a dead white male to make a point instead of simply explaining your position.
  6. Also if/when people find out, could you post some info regarding the stipend. Silicon Valley is ridiculously expensive even to me, and I live in Honolulu!!!!
  7. Interestingly enough, in my research I often go out of my way to obtain view points far outside of my own.
  8. Well that's no good. Wisconsin is my top choice for next year too.
  9. Nonsense. The facts speak for themselves, there's no need to look over any of them to prove a point.
  10. Berkeley only wants you to calculate the upper division credits in your cumulative GPA. They explain this clearly on the website.
  11. I think you're freaking out prematurely to say the least. You have only been rejected from one school, everything else is pure speculation and it sounds like it's not helping. Spend 60 bucks and go get a massage or something to relax.
  12. Oh boy, that means you'll have to get interviewed right? Do they cover expenses for those trips?
  13. Yeah. I had 30 credits and 3.2 GPA in community college (Portland). I wasn't going to be able to transfer to Stanford or anything, but I had plenty of options. I chose Hawai'i because I wanted to get away for a while. That said, once I set my sights on a T25 grad school, my adventure was over. I work so damn much I went to the beach maybe twice in the past 3 months. But hey, now I have a 3.94, I'm working as a research assistant, finishing an honors thesis, and applying for research internships. The hard work has paid off so far, but I definitely had to sacrifice my adventure for it.
  14. I transfered to Hawaii to finish my undergrad, that was my adventure. Now I just want to get into a good grad school that will have decent job placement. I am not a rankings snob by any sense of the means, I don't need job placement in some super prestigious school, I just want tenure track. Any school will do, somewhere like Evergreen or Reed would be ideal though.
  15. That's why I chose academia in the first place!
  16. Terminal MA funded or unfunded. If it is at a top ranked program e.g. Columbia or MAPPS, I don't care about funding. If it is a somewhat lower ranked program like Boston College or New School I would hope for at least partial funding.
  17. Well that is depressing. Something tells me that it won't jump back up to 35% by next cycle. haha.
  18. just fyi, a friend of mine got a rejection letter from IU.
  19. Applied sociology has always had a pretty bad rap. That said, it's getting more respected and attitudes about this vary across academia.
  20. I'm gonna cheat a bit. 1) Stanford, Wisconsin 2) Cornell, NYU 3) Michigan, UC-Irvine
  21. Politics of protest is a great book, and David Meyer would be an awesome adviser. I wouldn't think twice if you get an offer to Irvine, take it!
  22. I'd also like to know what other Masters programs provide funding. I know WashU often provides funding to well qualified applicants for example.
  23. I am largely focused on the strategies and tactics adopted by various social movements. My honors thesis (in progress) is exploring this very issue. I am theorizing that tactics are not just an issue of the resources available to particular groups, but that the political ideology of individual actors can influence the choice of tactics.
