  1. UCSD sent me an email with funding info today but the attachement was missing.
  2. Let's just say that it's more than that, plus they offer at least some students some other funding perks on top of the base stipend.
  3. One of the really appealing things about Oregon is their health insurance
  4. I don't think OU has rolling admissions. And yes Simon Fraser applied for a pretty sizable fellowship for me that has zero work requirements + the potential for an RA'ship with my top choice for an adviser. But no visit day makes it really difficult to compare.
  5. Oklahoma. Offered me 21k guaranteed for 2 years or 4 years "should I choose to continue on in the PhD program." Both for an MA program and for cost of living in Oklahoma that is a lot of money IMO.
  6. What to do with lower ranked programs that offer an absolute ton of money? I want to visit and get a feel for the department (I will be in town so they aren't paying for it) but I feel bad sitting on an offer I'm unlikely to accept. It's by far the best funding offer I've gotten so far, but it's an MA program (though they have already offered to guarantee me 4 years if I decided to continue after the MA.
  7. That is huge, congrats. I still have to wait another week to hear from Dev. Soc probably.
  8. The funding from those schools does not even come close, especially Wisconsin, but yes I realize that's nowhere near the only consideration.
  9. wondering what kind of offers the folks planning to turn down Stanford got. In my experience on this board in the last couple years people rarely if ever decline Stanford because their funding packages (and the minimal work requirements that go with them) are basically unheard of.
  10. I WAS ACCEPTED INTO UCSD!!!!!
  11. Not sociology per say, I was admitted to the environmental justice program at the University of Michigan. Wooot.
  12. I think this is more for schools that have not sent out official wait list notifications.
  13. Haha, I like this idea a lot.
  14. Some schools have unofficial wait lists. I know that UCI has said that they "may or may not" have a 2nd and 3rd wave of acceptances. Might be the case with UCLA or they may just be really slow at sending out rejections.
  15. waitlisted at Santa Cruz.

SInce you responded I thought you might want to know and this may be useful for anyone else wondering. So I haven't accepted the offer yet, but I went ahead and applied for housing regardless. There is a $50 application fee, but it seemed worth it to me. You are correct in stating that they have actual homes available for rent, however the wait on those is 12-18 months right now. I am hoping for a 1 bedroom apartment in graduate village and they responded that they expect to have one available by my preferred move in date which is August 1st. From what I understand graduate village has an approximately 6 month wait-list, the family apartments are 6-12 months and then the houses as mentioned are 12-18 months. Graduate village is more than adequate for my needs at the moment, but long term one of those houses would be great.
  17. You should have letters from your MA program but you can supplement the third letter from your UG program.
  18. Ha! Careful, sometimes notifications come on the weekend. UNC notified my partner on a Saturday.
  19. Personally, I think you should be yourself, piercings and all!
  20. You got an interview at MIT and Harvard, you are definitely good enough. That is super exciting, congrats!
  21. That's such a good analogy. I've spent so much time exploring and falling in love with schools that I have no chance in hell of getting into, haha.
  22. I had to email them to get my rejection
  23. Almost failed out of high school but managed to get the bare minimum requirements to graduate on time. At 24 I decided I couldn't stand my full-time retail job and decided to enroll in community college. I did alright in community college but had to work near full-time hours most of the way through and ended up with a 3.3 GPA. I transfered to UH Manoa in 2010 and soon after arriving one of my professors suggested I consider going to graduate school. Once I had done my research, found out how incredibly competitive the process was and how weak the job market was I started to take my academics very seriously. I managed to find a research position in my department and enrolled in the honors program. I managed to graduate in the top 5% of my class and now here I am. 10 years ago, I never imagined I would be applying to PhD programs...crazy.
  24. Simon Fraser is in the process of making me a very substantial offer of funding. I thought I was figuring this out and now I'm not sure again, haha.
  25. UCSD is done with first wave acceptances, however it seems they expect to pull some off the wait-list. I emailed the graduate director to get my status.
