  1. My partner has a BA in anthro and an MPA and was accepted to a top 5 program. So yes, that should work no problem.
  2. Just got invited to the final interview round for Teach for America. I may have to do some serious thinking in the near future.
  3. My partner applied to sociology programs to. When she told this dude at her work with a PhD in marine sciences that she applied to UNC for sociology (a top 5 program), he said why? UVA and various xyz Ivy League schools are better, when she explained when they actually aren't better ranked in sociology specifically, he just brushed it off. Annoying.
  4. I know in Sociology some schools notify and some schools don't. People have not heard anything for a while and then gotten a late acceptance.
  5. Possibly unofficial wait list
  6. Possibly unofficial wait list
  7. So let me preface this by saying I told my dad my plans for grad school 10+ times including sending both my preliminary lists and final list of schools/programs I was applying to. Upon notifying him of my first fully funded acceptance to a PhD program he says: I know he was trying to be nice, but I find that really irritating. Sociology was always the plan, but for a few months 3 years ago, I considered doing a joint program and getting a JD at the same time.
  8. Yes this is quite common, particularly with programs making substantial financial commitments (i.e. 4-5 years funding including stipend, tuition and health insurance)
  9. Well, that's 3 likely rejections or possible wait lists. I really wish schools would send out rejections and wait lists at the same time. On another note, Stanford has been a dream school for me well...forever. But in all honesty, Dev. Soc at Cornell has and continues to be my top choice, not that I'm likely to get in there either but I absolutely love the work they do, and scholars they've produced (i.e. Raj Patel).
  10. Uh oh. I never expected to have a chance in hell of getting in there anyway, but damn!!!
  11. On a more positive note I just received an email from the honors council at my school notifying me that I received high honors in sociology. That is on top of graduating summa cum laude with my 3.95 GPA. Unfortunately, my school is slow as all hell and this was not reflected in any of my applications unfortunately.
  12. Anyone know what's up with the irvine acceptance? That was one of my top choices.
  13. Damn, I applied to Austin. I guess no news isn't bad news, but now I'm a bit worried.
  14. I think it also depends what kind of job placement you're hoping for. If you hope to work at a top 30 school, you should probably go to one.
  15. WOOOOOT My first notification is an acceptance! I take that as a very good sign!!!!
  16. I've done everything I can at this point. My academic record is nearly flawless, and my CV is better than any other undergrads i've seen. My only blip is a slightly lower quant score, and the prestige of my undergraduate institution. I'm holding out hope but this long wait sucks. Kinda wish I had applied to Penn, or Ohio just so that I would know something by now.
  17. I am getting so beyond anxious, I hate it.
  18. Like a BOSS! Haha, this was really cute, thanks for posting.
  19. I totally agree. I never expected, or wanted to be anonymous here. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that someone would use old YouTube comments as ammunition against me though. I rest assured in my belief that people involved in AdComs would not take some pettiness like that and use it to deny an application though. Anyway, thanks for the post FertMigMort, I look forward to reading your insights!
  20. One of my favorite songs ever.
  21. I haven't had a good nights sleep in weeks, to make matters worse, my partner just got accepted to UNC (top 5 in Soc), I am super excited and happy for her, but it just makes me feel the pressure of expectations even more. I hate the pressure of everyone expecting me to get into a great program. Yeah, I was the standout in my department at my lowly state flagship R1, that doesn't mean jack compared to the pool of applicants I'm competing against. Even some of my professors, who do not understand just how competitive it has gotten since they applied, expect me to get accepted into a top 30 program. It's driving me a bit nuts.
  22. Interestingly enough, UNC did not offer my partner anything in the way of funding to reduce the burden of travel costs for the visit. I know they are a public school, but I thought the top programs at least provided something in the way of travel stipend to accepted applicants.

  24. yeah, she's super duper smart! haha. I'm really nervous now. If I get into any of the top 31 PhD programs I applied to I will be really happy, otherwise I'll be pretty bummed, especially now!
