  1. A week would be nice in some cases. Many programs take weeks or a month to send out rejections. But that's ok, it allows me to stay in my unofficial wait list bubble.
  2. This is why I don't call, so I can pretend that I am on some mysterious unofficial wait list.
  3. Having 3 funded offers, one of which is a PhD program, helps my ability to remain patient tremendously. Any other news at this point is just icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.
  4. No. I'm a fan of just waiting it out, haha. If you hear anything though, let me know!
  5. I did too and it's one of my top choices. I was hoping for an acceptance email this morning and instead I got a Wisconsin rejection haha. One concern is that the faculty member I have the greatest fit with is on sabbatical next year.
  6. Madison rejection here, bummed because the fit was perfect but not surprised.
  7. I was accepted the MA program in Sociology at Simon Fraser, still waiting to hear from UVic and Toronto(fingers crossed).
  8. Tuition is usually separate, except in Canada where many programs expect you to pay tuition with your stipend.
  9. It's a 2 year program. Here is the sample timeline: http://www.socanth.sfu.ca/documents/doc/Sample_Timeline_for_MA_Program.pdf My hesitance in accepting an offer from a MA program is exactly the issue you're describing. I would also likely want to strengthen my GRE quant score before my next application cycle, but seeing as it is a two year program, I would have time to do that if need be. I'm not sure what to do, and am still leaning towards the offer from Oregon at this point. However, what I told Simon Fraser was that I would be unable to seriously consider the offer without comprable funding, which is in fact, true. I also still have 8 programs that have yet to send out anything (with the exception of the lone acceptance from UCSD). I will be visiting as many programs as possible in order to make an educated decision. I also need to see if Oregon will up their offer to a .49 FTE which would provide funding comprable to my offer from Oklahoma and Simon Fraser. I also need to think long and hard about the issue of job placement. While Richard York and John Bellamy-Foster are indeed very well known, Oregon's recent placements leave a bit to be desired. Now I know why some people feel this part of the process is the most difficult.
  10. Simon Fraser just offered to match my highest current funding offer. Uh Oh! This is all going to get real confusing and difficult soon! It's an MA program, so that complicates things a bit. But I also feel like MA programs in Canada are a bit different since they separate the MA and PhD. Simon Fraser is a good school, and a good fit, but I'm not sure about the job placement of their PhD's or their PhD placement of their MA students. All questions I'll have to ask I guess. Still leaning heavily towards Oregon at this point, but I'll have to consider all offers fully once I receive them.
  11. Accepted to Simon Fraser. No word on funding yet.
  12. Someone got an acceptance from UCSD??? ;-(
  13. Wooooot, finally got my first official rejection, from Stanford no less. No worries really, my heart isn't in social movements anyway, I only applied there because I love the school and they support their students so well.
  14. Madison??????
  15. And... this is why I am stoked about the idea of going to Oregon. No one is going to care one iota about piercings are tattoos.
  16. Congrats on the Chicago acceptances, sounds like an amazing support package.
  17. Sorry to hear that, hang in there. I'm annoyed that I have yet to be rejected from anywhere even though 4 of the schools I applied to sent out multiple acceptances a week or more ago. You want to believe you might be wait listed or that there will be a second wave of acceptances, but a rejection is the most likely scenario at this point. I just want to know so I can move on.
  18. "See, what were you worried about, I knew you'd get in."
  19. Congrats on the Arizona acceptances everyone!!!
  20. Maybe! I think the graduate teaching fellowships are about the same, but Oregon only offered me a .4 FTE and Oklahoma offered me .5 FTE which works out to about $2,000 more for 9 months. Oregon makes their offers based on whether applicants have an MA or BA coming in, I'm not sure how negotiable that is, but it certainly couldn't hurt to ask. I do find it somewhat amusing that I was offered more $$$ for an MA program than a PhD program.
  21. Accepted to the MA program at U of Oklahoma. They actually offered me more money than Oregon, haha.
  22. My top choice for region is DC. I doubt I'll go that route, my heart is definitely in a sociology PhD program, but I think it's a great opportunity and the promise of actual job security is certainly appealing. It's always good to have options.
  23. So this is something I have been discussing with my partner as I mull over my only acceptance thus far. While I have yet to hear from a few of my other top choices, I have been thinking about whether or not the current offer on the table is one that I want to accept. I actually love the sociology program at Oregon and if I wasn't willing to truly consider attending, I would not have applied there. There are a number of faculty that would be amazing to work with and that are very well known in the field. I also know and love the area and wouldn't mind spending 5-7 years there. However, I am concerned about two things, my chances for TT job placement, and the ability to live off the funding that is currently being offered. With these considerations off the table, Oregon would probably be my #3 choice of programs to attend, without question. My partner made a good point about subfields the other day, and I think it's a worthwhile consideration. While I agree with the posters here that subfield rankings probably matter very little in terms of job placement, they do matter in that I have very few programs to even apply to. I am of the opinion, that rankings wise, things seem to go like this, top 10, top 20, top 30 and then 40-60, most things seem equal. With my subfield being environmental sociology, there are actually very few programs for me to even consider applying to. I personally think it is a growing subfield, and will be a strong specialty area down the line, but the reality remains, even if I were to say, strengthen my quant score and go get an MA somewhere, my chances for better placement would be limited by the fact that my subfield is a speciality at only a handful of schools, all of which could easily reject me the next round just based on the number of applicants vs available spots. Programs I could apply to include: Wisconsin Cornell (Dev Soc) Brown UCSD ( they don't do environmental soc per say, but have folks that focus on agro-food systems and agrarian politics) Washington State NC State Boulder Oregon Santa Cruz There are more, both those programs have folks working in areas I'm interested. Also, as you can see, I applied to most of them already, and the rest were on my list before I had to whittle it down to 15. http://envirosoc.org/gradprograms.php
  24. NotSure....really? Why do people feel the need to come in here and trash the discipline? Come on.
