  1. Hello. Is anyone here aware of any sample Boren Fellowship essays available on the Internet to read? I'm trying to get an idea of how people structure typically these essays; I've seen samples of Fulbright essays before, but have not found any for Boren. Thanks.
  2. Then how do you figure out what a generic statement is? Do you have to cite the names of professors for MA programs? I'm applying to an Area Studies program. Is stating that a program at Blank University will improve your foreign language skills (because you don't have any and have no other way of obtaining them in a specific language) or give you needed background courses that you cannot obtain at any university where you live generic? Isn't jellybean's example sentence generic? I mean, technically anyone could write a sentence like that, right?
  3. What exactly is tailored? How do you determine if you have tailored it enough, or if it sounds generic? How do you write a statement of purpose that is perfect enough for you to be accepted?
  4. If there is no formula for this, then how can someone improve their application for next year? Is there any advice on what someone should do if they intend to apply again? I will be certified to teach English by the end of this summer, although it is too late to tell Fulbright that information for this application season.
  5. Does anyone here know someone who recently went from alternate to accepted for Indonesia ETA? Also, I lost the link to the spreadsheet and want to look at it again. Can someone post it?
  6. Wow. That is amazing! Congrats!! Did he say if the money comes from Malaysia or if it came from the US State Department? I'm still not sure that I understand where they find the additional funding for some countries and not others.
  7. Roland, Did you find anything out yet?
  8. No, I also applied for an ETA for Indonesia. I was named alternate in March and then received an envelope directly from AMINEF in Indonesia in mid-April. The envelope had a piece of paper in it that required alternates to check one of two boxes, either informing Fulbright that they wanted to remain on the alternate list or be removed. I checked 'yes' to remain on the list, scanned it and emailed it to the Fulbright contact person in Indonesia and she responded to let me know that she had received it. So, I have been assuming all this time that AMINEF would contact alternates for Indonesia and not the office in New York, but I don't know that for sure. I'm still so completely confused as to how the application process works.............
  9. Did any of you Norway folks ever get off the waitlist?
  10. Yes, but isn't Fulbright-Hays separate from Fulbright ETA's and Fulbright Full grants for students?
  11. I am an alternate for Indonesia and I am still waiting, so I don't understand how they could offer someone who was rejected a space. Indonesia even mailed me a form that I signed and sent back to their director asking to remain on the waitlist as an alternate. That was in the middle of April and I have not heard anything from Jonathan Akeley or anyone in Indonesia since then. Could someone please explain if this would even be possible? Is it possible for Fulbright to give someone who was rejected a space? And if so, why would they do that instead of giving an alternate a space?
  12. Does anyone know if Indonesia will fund more ETAs? I'm still waiting...........
  13. I'm not referring to CLEA. What I mean is, when will Fulbright know if they have additional funding for alternates who are still on the waitlist for an ETA or Full Grant? The information in the letter sent out to alternates said that they would know in late spring. When exactly is "late spring"?
  14. So, I am guessing that Fulbright still has not determined if there will be more funding available?
  15. Are you still waiting? I don't understand how they could even predict that they will have more money if the budget is going to be cut. Maybe I am confused about how this works though.
  16. Has anyone on here recently been moved from alternate to candidate status? Just wondering, as I am still waiting. Do you all think they find out about more funding towards the end of May? Middle of the month?
  17. Does anyone know how much additional money became available last year? I'm still baffled that they can even say that additional funds will become available when the government is so messed up economically.
  18. How do they know for sure that they will have extra funding?
  19. Does the budget issue mean that there will be no extra funding?
  20. Did the people in the spreadsheet listed as alternate, then accepted, get accepted because someone already dropped out? I received a letter from the Fulbright office of Indonesia telling me that I was an alternate and to let them know if I wanted to stay on the list or not. I don't understand why they sent me this when the Fulbright office in New York already notified me that I am an alternate. When do they find out if they have more money to send other people?
  21. So, Indonesia's information on the website says there are 35 grants, which means 70 people were recommended. Is it likely that a large number like 15 or 20 were alternates? I just cannot imagine that they would think that that many people would decline an award or that they would receive extra money for that many spaces. Is the government even going to give extra money this year? I read some post on here a long ways back about a petition to save Fulbright from being cut.
  22. I was wondering the same thing for the country I applied to about how many people could be alternate versus rejected. I would guess that it makes no sense for all of the extra recommended candidates to be alternate.
  23. Okay, then I'm wondering if you can give some ideas on how someone can improve their application. Would you rewrite essays entirely?
  24. If I went to get another degree, I wouldn't do it unless I received funding. That's what happened the for the graduate degree I already have. It isn't even about the name "Fulbright," but more about the security of being abroad in a program where I can receive language training and have assistance from someone affiliated with a legitimate program if need be. In other words, I'm looking for a program where I'm not dropped in the middle of nowhere without some kind of assistance and no way to communicate with the locals. Going to Europe would be easy because you can almost certainly find someone who speaks your language if you happen to need help (for instance, you get sick and need a doctor). That's the whole point of getting some kind of language training and also knowing someone (in this case, the Fulbright people at the individual countries' Fulbright offices who do the ETA in country orientations). I looked at Peace Corps and decided it isn't as safe sounding to me. That's just my opinion.
