  1. I was wait listed at Rutgers! I am so excited to have gotten an answer other than "NO!" There is hope for this cycle, though told not to expect anything for a few weeks, but to keep an eye out. I tried to get a little more info re: wait list in general and what I can do to improve my chances (there was some talk of securing my own funding, so I'll be getting a metal detector and hitting the beach I guess) and I will let you know if I hear anything else useful. ETA: Rutgers maintains a ranked wait list of 5, which I'm not on. The next batch is unranked, and that is unfortunately where I am, though a POI did tell me they do regularly admit beyond the ranked list. They also only admit students that are fully funded, so there goes my digging for change plan. Hope that helps! You are totally right, and I feel exactly the same way about Yale. UGH! We all got such different responses! I mean, my POI told me she couldn't say anything and they were still deliberating. In my dreams, I guess.
  2. Broke down and emailed a contact on the adcomm at Rutgers. Will report back. ETA: Unrelated, but did anyone's Columbia status page change a little? It seems to have added "Fall 2014" to the Application Management page (in addition and to the right of the blue "2014 Fall") link. Then when you click the "2014 Fall" link, it brings up a little window. That window now has this in "Details": Fall 2014, Anthropology, Ph.D. 2014 2014 Fall I know it sounds crazy, but I swear there weren't that many 2014s earlier today! Anyone else?
  3. I want to be optimistic, but I feel like if the grad school is sending, the only thing they are sending is bad news. My understanding is that the department sends good news. BUT WHO KNOWS? Let's keep the hope alive.
  4. You! You are an angel. Thanks, and we'll miss you -- come back and see us next year!
  5. Second Rutgers result today -- anyone want to claim? CITE?
  6. Thanks for reaching out! I talked to my POI on Tuesday and they said they were in the midst of things and they couldn't disclose one way or another. It made me think that maybe not everything was all set? And nobody claimed those Columbia posts...I remain skeptical.
  7. A friend of mine was admitted yesterday via email from a POI. They were interviewed, as we should assume all admitted students were.
  8. Anyone want to claim Rutgers acceptance? Subfield?
  9. Well, of course it is about fit, but individual departments do express preferences one way or another, and this is not just always a historically-driven assumption. My statement about NYU is fact -- they prefer to train students themselves. I am sure that goes for other departments as well. The MA/BA debate is ongoing. There is a poll over in the Philosophy board that I think could be helpful here too where people are marking outcomes and degree statuses...
  10. It depends on the program. I know, for example, that NYU sociocultural prefers students without MA degrees. Last year only 2/8 of the new cohort had MA degrees.
  11. Got my official NYU rejection, despite hearing from my adviser in person a couple weeks ago. Frankly, offended by the form email. I don't think that's appropriate when dealing with current students or employees. You don't have to believe me, but all NYU offers have gone out anyway.
  12. All NYU offers (and I'm 90% sure wait list too) have gone out. Not everyone got their rejection yesterday, but no clue why not. Probably NYU's crappy overall web system. Sorry!
  13. CONGRATS! The Chicago MA is pretty much a golden ticket in the right hands, so that is wonderful news. Unrelated, but heard back from my POI at Columbia and they politely said the process is ongoing and they couldn't say more than that. In my mind that set off acceptance fantasies, but I'll take what I can get at this point. Hope that helps anyone else waiting on Columbia!
  14. Broke down and emailed my POI at Columbia. Will let you know if I receive howler in return.
  15. Thanks! That is actually very helpful. There were 2 unclaimed acceptances on the results board last week, so now we know they are probably real. oh well.
  16. Well, it would make you a hero, so there's that...
  17. OK, who wants to call Columbia? I'm dying to know, but I don't want to reach out since I already updated them about a scholarship in January. I know you guys want to know also!
  18. You are in good company! Next year we'll know everything, right? Sorry about UCSD
  19. GEEZ. The storms we got in the region must have really slowed them down. They are way behind schedule given what we know about the last few years. No NYU notification for me yet. Is everyone who got one already early in the alphabet? I'm praying I get a personalized message (maybe even with explanation) since I currently work for the department and I already was told I didn't get in. Ugh, I don't want to pray for some pity-wait listing, but can't help but think maybeeeeee...
  20. Hi Emma -- so sorry to hear about Columbia. They are one of my last chances too...do you mind me asking how you heard? ETA: OOPS! Realized you applied to AH&A -- different department. But keep the faith! It does only take one.
  21. YAY! I'm already out of upvotes for the day, so that's a good sign
  22. Not sure. I mean, other disciplines tend to get it more (people apparently post fake philosophy results a lot) but I think sometimes people see anxiety being expressed on the boards and get a kick out of creating more tension regarding a specific school many people are waiting on. On the other hand, maybe it's a common impulse. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it, just out of resentment and general boredom and frustration. Trolling is common on the web, so why not here?
  23. Wishful thinking, but maybe the Columbia responses are fake? I know fraudulent postings happen a lot on the board.
  24. I don't generally tell people that my MA is in communications. I use the media and cultural studies part of our department title. I don't do comm work, really, so it doesn't make sense. I also think that the popular idea of communications degree can be very off the mark in terms of the reality of research-oriented comm scholarship.
