Another user here and I have spoken over PM, and that UPenn rejection looked like them. If you noticed, the results said they were an alum. So it probably came via those channels (POI, former adviser, etc). That's my best guess.

Anyone care to claim the Columbia sociocultural admit? Congrats (but also ughhhhh)!
-
In the past, only students with interviews have been accepted. Yale generally interviews a large group (20-30) and admits from there. I too did not receive an invite, and counting it as an implied rejection.

I hate to keep asking, but I realized there was a Rutgers interview posted on the 18th (another on 14th, but I think I know who that was). Was it one of you guys? CITE? Any info would be appreciated.

Not in a million years. But if you expand an apartment search to include parts of Harlem and the Bronx (I am a big fan of the Bronx, and parts of it are beautiful) I think you could make do with roommates and a tight budget.

Hey Dreams--UPenn is so far silent, but I know they don't have an official medical sub-discipline. I assume you mean cultural?

I have a lot of friends moving to Ditmas Park in Brooklyn and finding places for between $1200-$1600 that are very spacious and near the subway. It's the Church Ave Q stop -- and I'd recommend it for NYU/CUNY students. Pretty easy commute, close to the park.

If it makes anyone feel better, I told my advisers and supervisors (RA, TA) and they are more angry than I am. it feels nice to have a team behind me that is acting so surprised and offended about what is looking like an utter washout (3 rejections, one implied, 3 unknown but not holding my breath) and definitely softens the sting of all the bad luck.

Thanks! Do you know if all interview invites went out yet?

Any news re: Rutgers? There was on interview up. Still no confirmation as to the size of the cohort for CITE. UGH

Is there an analogue of the NSF GRFP for people who already have an MA? I don't think I have a shot at Ford and my work doesn't engage a site appropriate for the Fullbright, but my work is a great fit for the NSF. Any ideas for predoctoral fellowships along the lines of the GRFP? The NDSEG does include "behavioral" sciences, but I haven't seen any anthropology projects get through, so I think they mean it more literally than the NSF. Any help would be appreciated!

NYU is done.

Hi Colorless -- I really feel for you. I'm in my late twenties, and though I have no dependents, I too have struck out of the PhD game. I don't have the option of going for the MA (I have one already), so you have room to grow where I don't. Do I think the Cornell MA will help you next round? Absolutely. But is it worth dragging your whole family here to go into debt without being sure that you'll get in? I'm not sure. I've been doing some serious damage control with some of the faculty closest to me, and trying to get feedback as to improving. The story I'm getting is that the funding crunch has made it more competitive than ever before, and no matter how great you are, chances are someone will always be better. One of my recommenders said, of the 10 students she wrote for this year, only 2 have had positive results, and they both came in with either Ford or NSF funding AND publications. So now I'm going to go for NSF funding before my next round of applications. I personally know a lot of fabulous students having bad seasons in a lot of different disciplines, and I am trying not to take it to heart. I think if you choose to not go for the MA (and honestly, even if you do) the only way to be better is to be the best. Have some publications. I now have work under review at 3 respected graduate student journals (double blind review), and when my thesis is finished, I'm going to find a home for it at a top journal if I can. Present everywhere. Since my rejections started rolling in, I've gotten a paper accepted to one conference and sent abstracts to a bunch of others. Research! Look on the web for jobs related to your AOIs, and apply like crazy. Keep building until it's time to send those CVs out. Another thing I heard was that my topic just wasn't "sexy" enough to grab the adcomms the way I need it to. I admittedly played it safe, but I now know I should have taken a risk. Find out how you can make your proposal "sexier," or more relevant somehow. That's all I can say, I suppose, but just know that an MA won't do the work for you. Mine is from a top department and it did not get me in, though it certainly is giving me the tools to do the work myself. Hope that is helpful. Keep your chin up.

Rejected from CUNY with a form email. Looks like this season is a wash. I don't need official notifications from the rest of my schools to know what's already written on the wall, so to speak. Looks like I'll be here for next cycle too. Anyone?
-
I suspect the weather is delaying most NY schools, but Columbia is usually late and silent.

Anyone preparing for the Fall 2015 Cycle?
NOWAYNOHOW replied to autumn's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
It looks like I will probably need to reapply during the next cycle due to poor luck this time around. I'll be expanding my focus to include a few media studies programs, especially NYU, Stonybrook and Rutgers. I'll have an MA in media studies by then. Since this will be my 4th time applying for grad programs (MFA, MA and then PhD) I have had enough experience to answer as many questions as I can. Feel free to PM me. -
Thoughts on CUNY's incoming cultural cohort size? I am pretty much hinging my whole season on them. Any news out of Rutgers? Can anyone confirm/deny rumors of a potentially tiny (1-2) CITE cohort this year? I've heard this from multiple sources.

I'm afraid high-level jobs in museum curation require the PhD these days. I know a number of people right now with similar goals getting their PhDs in both anthropology and art history that have no interest in university teaching or research.
-
Got an official rejection from Princeton. Was expecting it, but first news of the season being so poor doesn't bode well. TGIF?
-
Yale interview on the results board. Eeeeeep. There goes my day. Anyone want to fess up?

WHOOO?? If I remember correctly, the CUNY cohorts are generally larger and eventually become the backbone of a distributed teaching workforce across the CUNY campuses. I personally have a lot of respect for their system. I know funding has improved this year, but am not sure whether that is changing cohort size. I do think I noticed that sociology had a lot of results already, making me think cohorts might be the same this year. Crossing my fingers!!
