  1. My primary advisor on my committee (and the only person I am sure about so far on the committee), is an off-campus researcher. It's a little different at my university though. There are certain organizations that are affiliated with the university, and the researchers who are at those organizations are often involved in research that is completely different from what people at the university are doing. It's the primary reason I decided to go here, actually.
  2. My referral link: http://db.tt/sP7j5Zy Thanks!
  3. I shaved my head in March of this year, and it has been amazing for the summer months! BUT it is taking forever to grow back out, and right now I am sporting something of a mullet. The worst part is, since I want to go back to long hair, I can't keep cutting the party end off in the hopes that it will style right. I tried...it just keeps coming back. SO I'm just not touching my hair for at least a few more months, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will look cute again soon!
  4. If you look up quinoa salad you will find some good recipes. I have been making it (1 cup quinoa) with 1/4 cup each of cilantro, dried cranberries, and chopped oranges, 2 tbs red wine vinegar, and 1 tbs olive oil. Chill and eat whenever.
  5. I love Calibre! I have actually found the textbooks I need online in PDF format, and put them on my Kindle. But, I am also going to get the actual textbook...the personal library thing seems pretty important now that you guys have mentioned it. Having the text on the Kindle will be nice though, so I can reference something without taking a heavy hardcover text to school everyday and I will be able to use the search function if there is something I needed to find in a hurry. And, ahembree, I definitely have been using the kindle / Calibre to read journal articles I love not having to print out everything / waste paper only to lose half the pages somehow.
  6. I used to be so scared of public speaking I wasn't able to continue talking to even my friends if I saw anybody else looking at me, or in my direction. One of my best friends "made" me get on a stage in front of ~600 people to perform poetry once a month in high school, until I went from a silent 3 minutes of just standing on the stage to actually performing. I never got good at it, and I don't do it anymore, but now when I'm presenting information or just speaking to a group, I can handle it. I don't know if that will help you, since I'm not sure how many venues there are that would allow you to stand on the stage shaking in fear with a really supportive audience. But, I guess I'm trying to say that practice makes perfect. If you can get a bunch of your friends to listen to you talk as the center of attention, and then add more friends & keep practicing until you are really comfortable with it, you might do better when you're in front of an audience you don't know very well.
  7. That's a good point (re: building personal libraries). I do know that I can annotate and highlight within the Kindle, but I'm not very comfortable with it yet. I'll probably stick with physical textbooks, at least until I'm better with the Kindle. Thanks for your input!
  8. Mine is 13 miles away, but I don't have a car and take public transportation. So it takes me an hour to get there. However, two of the research facilities associated with the school are only a couple stops away, so I'm hoping that my research will take me to either of those. The reason I live so far without a car is my boyfriend goes to med school an hour's drive away from my school, so we chose a place exactly halfway. I'm also very good at studying while on public transportation, so I don't really mind. ETA: It's also way nicer than when I lived off the train line, and had to bike an hour to school back in undergrad.
  9. Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had experience using a Kindle or other e-reader for their textbooks. I purchased a Kindle 3, and have been able to get the textbooks that are necessary for my classes in PDF form and the formatting looks okay, but I was wondering if there are any issues I'm not thinking of. Thanks!
  10. For those who are looking to use an iPad to take notes, my boyfriend got one & is using it with a case that includes a bluetooth keyboard to make typing easier. He also uses iAnnotate, which allows him to write equations etc directly on the screen and he can still type in notes. It works really well with slide shows if your professor posts them before class. He uses Evernote to sync the information to his desktop so he can go over the notes later.
  11. Going to Hawaii to visit my family & watch my brother graduate from high school before I can't go home for another long period of time. Reading all the books I bought thinking I'd have time this year. Training for a marathon...I really want to complete one sometime this year if possible. Moving into a new apartment (!!!) and getting everything organized (selling, donating as much stuff as possible). Go hiking as much as possible to train for hiking the Grand Canyon during Thanksgiving break (if we get one). Losing the 15 lbs I gained during undergrad so I can gain it all back over the next 6 years.
  12. I will not miss: Living with a roommate I barely know who makes a mess...Instead, I'm moving in with my bf, which will make things so much easier. Taking courses that have nothing to do with what I want to do with my life, but are necessary for my major (Psych major in Undergrad, but going into Neuroscience). Having to make Lab my last priority due to work obligations and course work. For that matter, I won't miss having to work 30+ hrs a week on top of 20+ hrs of courses on top of 20+ hrs of lab. It'll all just be compiled, which makes it at least make sense. I will miss: Living 5 minutes from campus (I'm going to the same school, but moving half an hour away [at least an hour by public transportation] to accommodate the bf's med school)
  13. I think it's just like exercising at any other point in your life. Having worked over 30 hours a week in undergrad while taking at least 20 hours a semester + being in a lab, I still exercised 5-6 days a week by scheduling exercise in. As long as you are someone who commits to their schedule, you should be fine. I put "jogging" into my schedule for every morning at 7 because that's the only time I'm able to go for a 30-40 minute jog without worrying about getting somewhere on time. I have "go to the gym" scheduled in for 6 days of the week for the moment I get out of every obligation that I have, and if I miss one of those days, I will still have worked out 5 days out of 7. It also really helps to schedule something with a friend. It makes you stay on track because you feel bad if you don't show up.
