  1. @veele Are u from MIT ?/ or a international student completing undergrad from MIT ?? (i heard they have a 5.0 scale CGPA) .
  2. hopefully they will mail us all the scores within next couple of days ......need the scores quickly to decide on a couple of universities to apply or not ......nd I am also hoping to get a score around 75% percentile ....although for international applicants 80% is considered to be a good score .....
  3. Submitted first apps to UND ......3 or 4 to go .......

  4. congrats .......unbelievable ..... admission decision at early december .......
  5. Dear all Any INTERNATIONAL student applying to Boston University this fall ?? As grad student I will be solely dependent upon the annual stipend...so do I need to send the Financial Sponsorship Certification form for International Students ??
  6. applying to Queen's University this Fall (2012) for Ph.D ..... from javi7830's post it seems that it is a really good place to live in ........
  7. thanks all I saw this in GRE webpage ..... Basically I wanted to know , when they will be mailed by ETS .......I guess that might be around 1 week before scores will be available online ......

  9. I did my M.Sc(2yrs ) frm IIT Guwahati ...
  10. Hello all International applicant ( India) here .... Applying to UT-Austin, Carnegie Mellon, Notre Dame and probably Boston Univ too ....... Area of interest is Theoretical Chemistry Stats: GPA 8.87/10.0 , GRE 660/750/3.0 , fair amount of research exp. although no publication ....Sub GRE score yet to receive (exam was on 12Nov) Good luck to all .... anybody else apping in Theo. Chem ??
  11. try european universities ..like in germany they have quite well funded research-based M.Sc degree program ....or if you are in US....you can try for Canandian Universities .....they have a strong M.Sc program with possible transfer to PhD after 2 years...
  12. hii guys.......After graduating this May .......after that starting from August I have joined under a Prof. for voluntary research.....also I have been asked by the Prof. to be part of the university's course content developing group.....so this group makes online study materials for Engineering undergrads ....nd I have been doing the Chemistry part ....it is pretty similar to UC Davis..dynamic textbook project http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/ .... I am basically not sure how to put forward this 'course content developing' experience of mine in my SOP .......I have thought of putting it forward as a favourable factor of being a good Teaching Asst. ....but still unsure about how will I write this exp. in my SOP so that Adcom might this as favourable point in my apps..... Any suggestion regarding this would be welcome ......... Will this anyway add something extra in my apps....othr than research exp and all ???
  13. so whts last resort..is it sumthng below safety ones ??
  14. which college u r frm ?? dont apply without doin sum independent research ....try for 2013.....with research exp and ur gr8 GRE score ur profile ud look much much better....
  15. well for UT Austin it is not required ( but 4 int. apps it is must - unofficially though ) ..and sub GRE is quite imp. to strengthen apps ....
  16. yeah..regarding this sub gre thing .....I have decided to app to confirm 5 [ if possible 6 ....but its difficult] ......following are the 6 universities I have planned to apply : U Texas Austin - 1st Jan , UBC - Feb 1 , Univ of Rochester - 15th Jan , U Missouri + Clemson Univ - march 1 ( lets take dat as Feb 1st) , Colorado state univ - not mentioned ..... so shall i scrap UT Austin ?? ....it seems to be dangerously on the border line ...
  17. good luck ..mate.....me too a computational physical/biophysical chemist from India..... will apply for Ph.D programs in USA/Canada for fall 2012.... r u an international / domestic guy ??
  18. Heyy..guys ,,,,so when is the best time to start the grad apps ...I will be applying for Chemistry grad schools for Fall 2012..and I have my GRE/TOEFL scores..except the Sub GRE [ will be sitting for that exam on Nov 12] .....
  19. ya..man......i have a M.Sc in chemistry ........ here in India we have 3 years B.Sc[Honors - with chemistry as honors subject] + 2yrs M.Sc....so basically we have 5 yrs study before we can apply for Ph.D ....... ne idea how ud it be ...??
  20. Heyy..just wanted to know how selective is UBC compared to middle/upper middle ranked US universities..e.g: Texas A&M , SUNY-Stony Brook, Univ of Notredam ...etc ?? Will apply this fall [fall 2012]...for Ph.D in chemistry....nd was pretty impressed by work by a couple of Theoretical Chem profs in UBC...... I am an international studnt frm India.......PLZZ REPLY GUYS ....
  21. are the grades out of 4 (pardon I am an international student)....??? However I am a physical chemist, theoretician to be specific.....if you wanna join grad school...I would suggest you first join for M.S in chemistry...get excellent grades to compensate your low undergraduate grades....do loads of research in your institution in one or more labs...it will be so good if you do a summer research in any other university.....THEN APPLY FOR Ph.D DOIN LOADS OF RESEARCH IS THE ONLY WAY TO COMPENSATE YOUR GRADES.... I have another thing to say....Pls pardon me if I am rude........ Physical Chemistry Profs never prefer student from physics background, as far as I know....( generally people think physics students fits well in physical chemistry group...but its generally not true) U shud true try material science..which has certain disciplines more related to physics........
  22. Anyone have any idea how competitive is theoretical chemistry in general ??
  23. Plzz suggest how to start a SOP -- with research experience / research interest or any other point ??? How much unconventional can a student of natural science be in application for grad school ??
  24. U can....I am not saying u shud forget.... earlier in this topic sumone has said....apply to one or two out of reach universities by fitting ur research interests in our SOP...I agree with the guy.....who knows a fit in research interest might get u in... and a consistent performer is always preferred....but ultimately a decent CGPA will do for u, if you have loads of research interest...... nd I think if you want to go top universities try for top public universities like Wisconsin, Penn State, UCLA , U Illinois-Urbana Champagne etc....they might not be as prestigious as Ivy Leagues or JHU ( JHU is best in world in bio)...but believe me the quality of research is as good as Ivy League...might even be better..and they are a tad easier to get into w.r.t Ivy Leagues...
  25. Hello Brother.......just like me u r a confused IITian...well I am frm IITG....n about to complete M.Sc in Chemistry...(did my masters frm IITG)....So here's the story...I applied in top US univ. this fall (like U Wisc. , U Maryland etc) got rejected....as expected beforehand......got 1410 in GRE old format ( 3 in Analytical Writting....a blunder)...106 in TOEFL....8.83/10 CGPA....everythng was good.....but sumthng very imp. was missing.....research exp. only abt 3 month during apps.......which was the major deciding factor that rejected my apps.....I will try again next fall with abt 8 months research exp. ..nd possibly a publication in International Journal (abt to send now)....nd will also try to get a above 80% score in GRE Chemistry test.....most importantly apply to middle ranked universities... So..here's the suggestion...(wht I feel shud be your priority at present..nd listed according 2 decreasing priority) 1. Try to take as much research projects as u can over next 1.5 years..just work for sumone..sumthng you r comfi with nd want 2 work in future....VERY IMPORTANT 2. Score 100 in TOEFL..VERY IMPORTANT for international apps..as there u have 2 teach undergrads...nd graduate committee particularly values TOEFL score for int. apps......not GRE 3. Appear for GRE Biochemistry exam..try to score above 70 percentile....( I dont think there is a test for Biotech.)....this will strengthen your apps... 4. In GRE decent score will do...no idea wht is a decent score in new format... 5. Dont apply to very higher ranked universities....coz of ur CGPA....try to increase ur CGPA to 7.5....nd apply to middle ranked US universities......
