Hero!!! I would really like to hear back from them soon. Even though I'm still waiting to hear back from several schools, I have a strong idea where I would like to attend. However, an acceptance to Rochester could possibly sway that decision.
-
I'm still curious about acceptances. I know the board is not at all representative of the number of people actually accepted by a program, but I only ever saw one. Does anyone have any idea?

Final Decisions?

Thanks, Rainy_Day. I was leaning toward this. I just needed outside perspective. My brain capacity has been dwindling for weeks. -
Final Decisions?

I have a question for everyone. I've been accepted to three schools so far. I have already positively ruled out one-- funding reasons, fit, etc. I know how to craft a rejection letter, but I'm not sure when to do it. My conundrum is I have a call with the DGS of the program this weekend, but I already know no matter what I will not be accepting an offer to this school. I don't want to do the call and waste her time when I know it's not the program for me. Should I just go ahead and send the email? I'm thinking so, but I wanted a few opinions first. -
Yeah, sometimes people don't pay attention to the date thing. I didn't receive a call, but I'm not that devastated. I wouldn't have accepted anyway. I'm curious about numbers, though. I think it was last year(?) when they had 102 applicants and accepted 4 because of funding issues. That's so tiny!

Yay, Cquin. Congrats! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it either. It would be trek to get there. Also, I'm leaning toward another program that I plan to visit then.

I had a similar response from one of my POIs. She said she was interested in my research approach and thought my writing sample to be strong. She said she'd thought I'd be a great fit for the program. I agree that the WS is such a essential part of the application. I knew the adcom would read through it, but I had no idea they would pass it to other professors. Also, for this program, in addition to all my others, I did mention specific POIs in my SOP. In my acceptance letter, it specifically stated how two out of three POIs I mentioned were really interested in working with me-- one of whom emailed me later in the day. So this is also a vote for mentioning the POI!

I really have my fingers crossed for you crystalleem. I don't really have any details. The official letter is to follow. But the email said they have a waitlist for admissions and funding. I'll keep you updated if I find out anything else.

I just got accepted to FSU!! I received an email from Janet Atwater inviting me to the open house on March 20th. The official letter with funding offer is to follow. I can't believe this! Good luck to everyone out there!
-
I know. As soon as, I posted my comment, I saw that waitlist.
-
From what I can discern from last year, I believe they notify in waves/whenever more funding becomes available. So, unless you receive a straight out rejection, I would think positively.
-
The past two years it has been March 3-5. So close, but I know these next few days are going to drrraaaaggg.

I will likely take you up on this offer very soon! Thanks!

Thanks, Kikalique! I almost did my MA at UNCG, and I like their program a lot. It's seems laid back and super friendly. I also did my undergrad in NC, so it would be a comfortable location for me. Right now I'm trying to weigh everything evenly, even though it's difficult. I'm contacting both programs and trying to talk with as many people as possible. I also have ten other programs I haven't heard from yet. Have you ever been to Purdue before? Congrats on your acceptance!

Post-Acceptance Stress & Misc. Banter
Jbarks replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes, there are days when I feel the same way. I constantly hear about the abysmal job market and how I will never get a TT job let along any job. Then there's the prospect of living on a humble stipend. But it's what I love. I've worked a corporate job for a little over two years, that pays really well, and I get pretty sweet bonuses and free lunch (which is always a winner), but I'm miserable. I live a comfortable life, and I thought I would be happy, but nope. However, I KNOW I'll be happy when I back in school and doing what I love. Also, the sad part is I haven't even been out of my MA for a year. -
I've seen a few Purdue acceptances on the board. I was accepted yesterday (Literary Studies), and it's definitely a top choice for me. I'm just curious who else has been accepted, so we can share our thoughts on the program or ask questions.
-
Nope, nothing here. I checked my online status and it's the same.
-
They should start to notify at the end of this week maybe? There still is that one random acceptance from last week.... At this point, I just want to know either way, so I can move forward.

translation test examples
Jbarks replied to yank in the M20's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I think it varies. At my program, they required you to translate a three paragraph passage in two hours with the help of a dictionary. The PhD passage was a little more advanced than the MA. My language of choice was Classical or Koine Greek. I almost chose my other language, which isLatin, but I'm glad I didn't. I just had to translate three paragraphs of Revelations. I think I lucked out. I wouldn't worry too much. You typically get to use a dictionary, and they give you plenty of time. -

I received two from BU. Yeah, I get it. You don't need to send me a reminder 10 minutes later. -

I definitely will. It is at the top of my list, and I'm really excited about the program. Thanks! -

I was just accepted to Purdue. Thank you, Jesus! Of course I received the email at work, so now I can't concentrate on anything, and all I want to do is run up and down the hallway, which is probably not professional. I never thought I would get accepted to one program. But two?! Craziness. -
Even far out in those places, $1500 for a 2-3 is going to be a difficult find, unless it's pretty shady. I live in a three bedroom in North Park Slope (Brooklyn), but I share with two roommates. For our apartment it's $2800 a month altogether. I live in a pretty popular area near express trains, etc, so it's true, the farther out you go, the cheaper. I know for $2000 you could find something in a decent area, but I don't know if that would work for your budget. I would avoid Staten Island at all costs. Also, if you commute in from a place like Westchester (which is also not cheap) or Poughkeepsie even, the amount you pay for train tickets, parking, etc. will almost equal NYC apartment costs. My best advice is to try to increase your budget if you can. Or, if that's completely not an option, you could try moving farther out in NJ (suburbs). I work with a few people who commute in everyday, but it's a pain in the ass. Good luck, and if you have any questions about neighborhoods or anything, feel free to PM me.

Congrats, Bdon! Even though they do fund well, I would choose the PhD option too. A great feeling, though.
