How are you coping with waiting?
Jbarks replied to bdon19's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Worst fear...This would be terrible. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/29/vassar-college-applicants-false-acceptance-letters_n_1240345.html -
Same here with my current job. I know I will always have it, but, at the end of the day, I feel so defeated. I work in finance, and all I want to do is study English and read lovely books. I used to take acting classes. Maybe I'll start that again after rejection season. At least, I can become other people for awhile.

And after a shitty day, everything is starting to look rosey. -
I will also be quitting, but not until midway through the summer; I need to make as much money as possible. BUT, if I do get accepted in several weeks, I'm treating myself to another tatoo.

Earlier Better? Any Pattern?
Jbarks replied to 0000000000AAA's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
When I applied last time (three years ago), I checked at least twenty times a day. It was pathetic and unheathly. This time around, once February hits, I'm not ckecking at all. I will still continue to check the forums and post things, but I refuse to check the results board. It sometimes skews your perception. My acceptances to MA programs didn't arrive until late March, and, but that time, I had ruled everything out because I kept seeing all of the acceptances/rejections in late February/early March. Anyway, for the month of February, I bought some Good Luck incense. I plan to burn one a day for the whole month. That's how I'm doing it. No results board...just incense. -
Interviews....

I know! I had the same thought. My stomach did that weird flip flop thing. Congrats to Pickson and good luck! -
DONE. Ugh. Anyone else done?

So very true... -
I know! I applied to CU-Boulder as well. I think funding is always an issue there (or so I've heard). It was either in 2009 or 2010 that they received 102 applicants and only accepted 4. Who knows? Maybe this year things will be different.

GRE Literature in English
Jbarks replied to Folly's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks for sharing this. It alleviates a little anxiety. I scored a 570, as well. After I found out, I had a mini breakdown. But I know that it's not all about the scores. Hopefully, I'll have the same good fortune as you! -
Your top choice program?

I agree with Timshel and Bdon, but Rochester is technically my number one. -

Yes, I received this email, too. Twice. Very lovely...I wish it were an acceptance email. -

Downton Abbey started on Sunday; that should help things. -
Annoying writing habits...
Jbarks replied to todamascus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
These two things drive me crazy, especially the second one. It's ME, just say "me." It will be all right-- saying "Sarah and me" will not make you sound hillbilly. I suppose I feel passionately about these things. -
Predictor of Admit Chances?
Jbarks replied to Grunty DaGnome's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
According to the ever-wise Magic Eight Ball, I will be accepted into the following schools: University of Rochester, Illinois, UCONN, WashU, and "maybe" Maryland. Just to make sure with Rochester, I asked three times; all were "yes" or "definitely." I'll take it. But then maybe I should question the prescience of this thing. -
At the end of the year, I received a generous raise and awesome bonus. It was a great feeling until I realized two things: 1.Everyday I go to work a little piece of me dies inside; 2. I make approximately four times more a year now than I ever will on a PhD stipend. These conflicting thoughts only exacerbate my anxiety.

I will be so elated; I plan to let the entire world know. And I couldn't care less if people thought I was conceited or obnoxious. I worked my ass off for this.

Reading lots of books, working my regular (lame) job, United States of Tara, Top Chef, and Prime Suspect (Helen Mirren version, not the new one). I was relying on American Horror Story until it ended. Alas... -
0% Confidence of Acceptance

Lolopixie-- I submitted everything early December, but my last two recommendations weren't received until the last week of December. I believe you can also login to your application to check the status of your materials. Also, if it helps, the email came from Jill Quirk, the graduate secretary. Good luck! -

I received this email from Purdue this morning. Thank you for your interest in graduate studies at Purdue University. Your application file is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. At first, I became excited because the process has begun, but then I felt nauseas because I'm terrified of what the results might be. -

Amazing book! She's one of my favorite living authors, too. Penelopiad and Alias Grace are my favorities of hers...also, her poem "Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing." -
Who will be looking at my applications?

Thanks this post was pretty helpful. Even though I know the process varies, having some idea of what could occur, alleviates a tiny bit of anxiety.
