I usually hang in the History forum... but I saw this article: http://poetsandquants.com/2012/02/01/ucla-rejects-12-mba-applicants-for-plagiarism/ and thought it'd be interesting as a discussion topic. Apparently, they are now using Turnitin to check those SOPs, and found 52 people had plagiarized their SOPs. Thoughts?

I created a separate account for grad school stuff... my future MIL sends me emails almost daily (usually nagging about wedding stuff.. I love her but ugh). Problem is... the separate account gets NO action.
-
Thanks. I'm freaking out over whether the Grad Admissions office will process papers, say, "hahah, just kidding!" and reject me. But anyway. Hope you get good news soon!
-
Heh the Wisconsin financial aid ones have also been annoying.

No, I got into Davis... Latin America. Didn't apply to Indiana But the e-mail came SUPER early... that application was due on the 15th of Jan., and I submitted it that evening. I got the news last week. That's why it shocked me. I understand you guys weren't talking about anything specific, but I did read some comments about fakes on other parts of GC too... sorry I got a little defensive, I guess it just hit a nerve

I got a ridiculously early email... it shocked the heck out of me. I'm still kind of in shock, to be honest. I'm sure some people probably think it's BS but.. whatever. While some people could be trolling, I don't see why people need to work themselves up to think that they are all fakes.

Bean: I had nowhere near a 4.0... and I got into one school already. A lot of it is based on your SOP and writing sample. My overall GPA was little above a 3.0 (thanks, math/science classes!).

No. Several current students said it's bad form. Tempting, no?
-
Someone said UCLA will be out "soon." No idea about Brown... waiting on that myself.

Let's get distracted and learn, at the same time. Share fun/funny/weird/interesting trivia from any field or time period of history - When Drusilla, the sister/wife of the Roman Emperor Caligula died, he imposed a one-year mourning period during which he banned "any man" from dining with his family, bathing and laughing, upon penalty of death. - The term "idiot" originally referred to a Greek citizen who did not actively/visibly participate in Athenian political life (i.e. did not speak at the Assembly or hold political office).

I tried to fix it for you

I'm in between books for fun... I just finished re-reading Pride & Prejudice, and I started Kafka's Metamorphosis but put it aside when I started with grad school apps.. then finals came and I was holding review sessions for my seniors. My library is full of books I intend to read but never find the time for... like Atonement, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Catch 22. For more serious reading, I'm going through the "Penguin History of Latin America." It's helping fill in gaps of knowledge, especially on Brazil, which I know painfully little about
-
I was being a little facetious I did get the e-mail just now though.
-
Nope. I guess that means I'm not in... lol.
-
Yep, and I'm "pending" too.
-
I think she was telling you that you had a great application but it wasn't completely up to her.. and hinting that if you don't get in, try going for a master's and reapply.
-
I've done the same. There's enough info to make me identifiable if someone really digs through archives... that's why I have not listed the other schools I applied to.
-
I had one of those "middle of the night" responses too. She didn't light into me, but she called me by the wrong name (funny, it's usually students who do this lol). After a couple more emails I decided not to apply to that school... and that first email was one small reason for the decision. :/

Two of my POI are on leave. One said he would not be back until April-May so I doubt he'll have much input; the other one was/is on maternity but was very much part of the committee.

at myself. I knew it was a HP reference, I just thought it was some kind of "code" lol.
-
Dumb question but... which school does "Hogwarts" refer to? Harvard?

Responding to an acceptance when you're not ready to decide

That's what I did. -
I'm recording an hour of The Big Bang Theory every day so that takes about 45 minutes of the day.

My students had finals this week so that has kept me relatively busy. I'm planning a wedding, on top of that. And I STILL can't stop checking. *rolls eyes*

Thanks everyone. I am really shocked because I just submitted the application on the 15th... so the turnaround was incredibly fast. I was hoping to hear from the first couple of schools (the Dec. 1st deadlines). Obviously I need to wait for the others but UCD is a really good fit for me... plus I'd love to stay in California and be relatively close to my family.
