  1. It's so hard to tell yourself that it's NOT your application... but it's true. We are not always rational about this sort of thing. AFB - keep the faith. You have plenty of places that you're still waiting to hear from.
  2. My condolences to the people who've been getting rejections the last couple of days (including my fellow Brown hopefuls). Just keep in mind that it only takes one acceptance!
  3. I think I'm gonna borrow that one.
  4. People called Mary I of England "Bloody Mary" for killing over 260 protestants. Her father, Henry VIII, killed well over 50,000 people.
  5. No kidding. At least I now know I'm not the only one in that mental state.
  6. Yeah... I mean, I know it can happen if say, your GPA is under the minimum, or something else is very weird... I'm not in the first category. I just tend to freak out about these things... I remember the first couple of years at my current school (teaching) I kept worrying about being laid off, even after I was tenured. Every year they talked about pink slips, and every year I started planning for the worst. I sound nuts, don't I
  7. I think Brown sent all of its rejections first.
  8. Yeah, Brown was attractive but I am very happy with Davis and I think it's a great fit for me. At this point there's only one school that I would possibly take over Davis and I'm likely to get rejected there too LOL.
  9. Well, I got rejected from Brown. Not hurt or anything... I know my application at that time wasn't strong.. it got better as time went by. I'm expecting a rejection from Wisconsin too.
  10. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. President Truman used to call the White House "the great white jail."
  12. Congrats to those who got into Wisconsin!
  13. Well, so much for Wisc. posting stuff by 3 PM today lol. It's 1 PM here (West Coast) and no dice.
  14. YAY Goldielocks!!!!!!!!
  15. The SOP was the toughest. I needed to really narrow down what I wanted to study... of course my interests may change but finding an appropriate explanation for a) changing fields of History and choosing what I chose, were by far the biggest challenge. That, and editing my writing sample from 2000, which required me to reconstruct the bibliography from scratch since I couldn't find it anywhere.
  16. I'm soured on the profession as well, for the reasons you mentioned. I'm leaving after 8 years. Of course, the primary reason is that I put off grad school for too long I saw that thread about funny things that students write.. unfortunately it turned into who knows what but.. I did want to share two funny things I've had over the year. 1. Beginning of a research paper: "Martin Luther King was the first African-American to have a dream." 2. On a test on the cold war, I had students write IDs. One answer to "Nikita Khrushchev" was "a black woman."
  17. I was told the same thing when I spoke to a POI back in November. >Edited to add: This was regarding the size of the cohort.
  18. Assuming I get into any other programs...once I get my acceptances and see the funding, I will decline the ones I know for sure I won't be accepting so others get moved up. I'm not likely to hold out for waitlists either, even at my top choice. I will need time to think about the move situation and whether my fiance will be able to find work there... that's a MAJOR consideration.

  20. In Argentina, they say that stepping on dog poo means you'll get money. Maybe she peed good luck!
  21. Oh no! Poor fishie.
  22. Oh, that's good to know. I'm a high school teacher (hopefully, won't be next year ) and students have to do a big research project in one of our GATE-type programs. They have been using Turnitin and this year someone was caught... copied everything pretty much off of websites, word by word. Now the parents are furious because the student got a zero on that paper and will fail the class... and they are accusing the teacher of lying. Incidentally, the teacher in question has a Ph.D. in History.
  23. The "Flanders mare," i.e. Anne of Cleves, was probably the most beautiful of Henry's VIII's wives by today's standards.
