  2. *hugs* I know next year will turn out better for you... it WILL happen for you.
  3. Well, I'm in a different field and I was their top person in my subfield, so I got everything early. Don't judge your timelines by mine.
  4. My fiance was thinking of getting a Ph.D. but realized he's going to need a M.A. first. He told me to pursue my dream and he'd move and adjust to wherever we go. He'll work and start an evening M.A. in a couple of years... we should be done around the same time. Meanwhile, my decision between two programs will depend on his ability to find work as a teacher in each area. Even if I'd gotten into Princeton I would have sacrificed that should he have been unable to find work out there. Our futures are tied, and that is perfectly OK with me. If I didn't have such a supportive fiance, I doubt I would have applied at all... he really pushed me to think positively and pursue what I wanted.
  5. I called and apparently one set of transcripts STILL hasn't made it. It's been sent twice. Someone is messing up with the sorting of mail.
  6. I got a separate email from the department outlining my funding offer as an attachment - I printed and signed it, and mailed it back.
  7. Congratulations!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!
  8. Hi all- If you were accepted into UC Davis by your department, have you gotten the official paperwork from the grad admissions office yet? I've been accepted and offered funding by my department but don't have stuff from admissions, and the website still doesn't show everything. Thanks
  9. I was told that on the first day we will have an informal get-together for my area group first, followed by a larger dinner for the department. Sunday I believe we will be hanging out more with grad students, get a tour, etc..
  10. In emailing POIs at one institution, once I got an offer, the professor not only asked me to call him by his NICKNAME (i.e. Joe instead of Joseph), but signed it that way too. And he referred to the other POI the same (which is how this POI signed all correspondence). Then again, I'm on the West Coast and I think we are a lot more informal out here than in the rest of the country.
  11. Anyone else with more than one offer feel guilty about turning one down? I'm a people-pleaser type and I will have to turn down one, maybe two offers. I feel horrible about it... I developed good relationships with POIs (some I even spoke to on the phone, others I had several email exchanges with) and the idea of having to say no after everything is just killing me. I know they are used to it but I would like to still be able to have some kind of networking connection with them even after I turn down the offer, and don't know how to word it.
  12. If they really want you, they will find extra cash for you. I was admitted very early to Davis and they offered me a great support package. They told me that if there were any other offers that I was considering where money was an issue, I should let them know. At the time I had no other offers yet --Pitt came in on Friday--but after telling them some concerns I had they gave me extra research money for the summer in addition to what I'd been guaranteed, and reduced my workload for one year, with no difference in support. I don't know that you have to divulge the specific schools (unless asked), but mentioning it casually might get you a little extra support... and while it feels a bit mercenary (at least for me) to play them up, truth is, even a $1K difference per year is a lot when you're in a graduate program.
  13. I hate grading too. :/
  14. Congrats, Goldie
  15. Congrats!!!!
  16. I second this.
  17. Thanks all I just want to thank everyone again for their support on here... I honestly didn't think I'd get in anywhere... I'm older than most of you (35 in a couple of weeks), have been out of school for a long time, and I don't have coursework in the field I'm going into. Plus my undergrad GPA is...ehh. You guys gave me the confidence to push forward and try and sell myself despite those "flaws," and focus on the positives.
  18. I got into the MA/Ph.D. - you can't apply directly to Ph.D. I got the email like at 4 PM Pacific time.
  19. Got admitted into Pitt with full funding and a fellowship Not before I got the "official" rejection from Wisconsin in the mail.
  20. Silly question but.. how do you go about withdrawing an application from consideration?
  21. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't guarantee anything. I've gotten four responses so far. My first (and only, so far) acceptance came a week and a half after the application was submitted, from the POI that I had corresponded with. The next three answers were rejections... sent by email/website. I had spoken on the phone to a POI in each school. I doubt that my emails/phone calls were a major factor in my rejections, but I know the emails were one factor in my acceptance. That school hasn't sent most of their acceptances yet. Hope that makes sense.
  22. I felt like a junkie last night too... yikes. We broke GC last night.
  23. I "reached my quota of positives" but I wanted to give crazedandinfused a thumbs and big toes up.
  24. I find Pinterest to be a great source of distraction.
  25. Yeah, I did. Ostrogoths went to Italy. Thanks!
