  1. I understand your pain. I just submitted all my apps and it feels so good. Good luck!!
  2. Ohhh everybody- all my apps are in! Now I just wait to hear. How is everyone doing with apps? Almost done? All done? Tearing your hair out?
  3. Hey guys, It's been awhile since I've been on but I'm back. Anyone get their new GRE scores (those of us that took it during the transition period)? I know they weren't supposed to be put up for a few more days, but some people got theirs (including me).
  4. Oh, Safferz, I understand your pain. I know what I got at the end (not that they let you easily write down that information and take it with you out of the testing room) but I want to know the real score! Ah, I have signed up for a retake on the 4th of Nov (not happy with my math score, though I know it really doesn't matter for History) just to be safe. But I don't think that really matters, either, because the old scores won't come out until the 8th or 9th. I didn't realize that until *after* I had scheduled for the 4th. Meh. I just ranted about this elsewhere and then read this post, so I'm sorry guys if I am double-ranting...but I had to! :0) On a good note, I asked my favorite professor if she would write me an LoR and she said of course. :0) She asked after my GRE scores and I told her (690-790 on verbal/crap on math) and she said I should not worry even though I don't know the exact score on the new scale. Ahhhh stress!
  5. I don't know if anyone has talked/vented about this...and I apologize if they have...but I need to do so. I really want my GRE scores (I took them in Aug) but they won't have them until Nov. 8th. *sigh* I know there is nothing that I can do, but still. And, yes, I know what I got at the end of the test but I want to know the real score, not the 100 point range! /rant
  6. Thank you so much, runonsentence!!
  7. All, I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere (if it has feel free to point me in the right direction and I'll read any archived information there), but I wanted to put this out there as I am starting the application season. I know that I have to (should) contact potential advisers in the programs to which I am applying. Do any of you have any advice/tips/suggestions/warnings on how to begin correspondence? Is email the best? Phone? There are two campuses which are near to where I currently live, but I cannot travel to the other campuses for in-person meetings (at least not until I am accepted...if that would be the case). I already know the contacts, so that is not an issue: it is just starting the whole communication at which I falter. Thanks, so much, for your time and advice in this matter! I am so nervous and I've hardly begun the process!
  8. I have Spanish (which will not help in this focus, I know), Romanian (I've have in-country experience and am good with the language - speaking, reading, writing, and translating- but could always use improvement) and translation-worthy French (i.e. I can read/translate/understand but I cannot speak it...it is the shy one in me). I'll continue to work on both the Romanian and French and, at some point in the next couple of years, add in German and possibly Russian. Not too much to do, I guess. Good luck and I'll keep everyone in mind as I will probably, at some point, feel like the *only* person in the world stuck doing apps.
  9. Hi! I took the new GRE yesterday and I know what my one-hundred point range is but I don't want to hold anything to that until I get the "official" schools in the mail. I did well on the V and crap on the M...so I am contemplating taking it again just to bring up my M scores. I have had issues with math all my life, so this is a little battle I have going with myself. But, anyway, I can sit for it one more time before apps are due (most of mine are due Dec. 1 or 15th). I've started apps and am going to speak with my professors about LORs in a week or two, after they get settled into the term. My area of focus will, hopefully!, be Eastern Europe WWII and the Cold War with Romania being my focus.
  10. Hello all, I have posted a small introduction elsewhere, but I wanted to come in and introduce myself here as well. I am a Modern Europeanist- finishing up my last year of MA work. I will be applying to Doctoral programs this application season. I just took the GRE yesterday and am glad to get that over with! As time goes one, I'll share more details but right now I am not sure what to share (it is the newbie in me) so I'll just wave and let my presence be known! I am excited to go through this process with all of you and to share our experiences! Good luck!
  11. Hi, all. I just wanted to quickly introduce myself. I am a master's student applying for PhD programs for Fall 2012 in history, of course. I am not sure what else to say right now (I'm a bit of a shy one), so feel free to friend me or ask me anything you all wish to know. Good luck to everyone and I'll see you around here!
