  1. Thank You Electric! I was thinking the same thing as petroleum engineering is very specific and most of those departments are unwilling to accept any student who has more than 2 deficient classes. As for geophysics, I did find many departments that fit my interests. I realized hydrology, and structural geology and numerical modeling are areas I fancy. Also, to everyone, what are the main differences between geophysics and geological engineering? And also, what is more broad or preferred by industries? There are a few schools that offer geological engineering and as I've talked to a few graduate schools, they are very much willing to accept other students besides engineering undergraduates. .
  2. Hey RafAkd! That's great! Congrats on the acceptance!!!!! What was your Bachelor's degree?
  3. Thank you very much GeoDude! (Btw, is that after the pokemon?, ahah). I am taking Real Analysis in two weeks, hope it sets the standard in difficulty? Anyways, you're giving me lots of hope on geophysics programs. Will get in touch about more information.
  4. JMU, thanks for reminding me about OU! They're heavily involved in petroleum geophysics as well. Though JMU, and Geodude. I'm graduating with a BA in Math with a possible minor in geology/geography. Do any of you personally know someone with a BA in math who went into geophysics? Looks like I could be in semi-good shape with my minor and maybe extra classes in physics.
  5. Thanks GeoDude, I haven't found many petroleum geophysics programs though. Just Imperial, UCalgary, Texas as I mentioned before. And so you're saying that I can graduate with a geophysics MS degree and still be a reservoir engineer/geophysicist even from a college not specializing in petroleum?
  6. Reservoir Simulation, Geophysical and structural research (mostly for ocean floors or tectonic plates), CO2 sequestration in the subsurfaces, and petroleum production. To say the least.
  7. So I've been rejected to all petroleum engineering MS programs I applied to, consequently, one of those school's graduate advisor told me that math/physics majors 'can not handle' the rigorousity of an engineering program. I was appalled at the fact that he welcomed me to apply last year but now he just simply flicks me off. Anyways, I talked with my geology professor and she suggested I look into Geophysics. Which I actually prefer more than PETE now. I've emailed a few graduate advisors and they consider math undergraduates who have a minor or more in geology. I'd like to ask if there are certain programs (besides Texas AM, UH, Calgary) that have Geophysics MS programs with petroleum concentrations? And of course, suggestions are most welcome.
  8. Got rejected from 4/5 schools: NMT, UW, TU, UAF. second year applying- all rejections again, doubt I'll get into Oklahoma U. Is it impossible for a math major to get an engineering MS????!!! Incredibly depressed right now.
  9. The sleekness is all the same from Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Asus now making ultrabooks/thingbooks. As for product service, I tend to my own pc/mac problems but Apple OS is pretty damn good. I'm giving an alternative suggestion other than MBP or MBA, as Lenovo (formerly IBM) was top notch with quality and most likely is in the PC market.
  10. MBA and MBP wayyyyyyyyyyy over priced for the specs you get. Lenovo gives you the same computer, 300-400 dollars cheaper. In fact, everyone does it cheaper. Only paying that much for the name. Look at Lenovo U and Z series.
  11. Hi All, I haven't received a response from any university for my MS applications in PETE, anyone receive a letter yet?

Ditto on what Enrico said, no or very little outdoorsey stuff here. Just head upstate, Vermont, NH, or Pennsylvania for that. I worked with a few friends who went to Pratt and lived in BK. They sure as heck did not dorm as it was way more expensive. Plus the area around Pratt is generally expensive anyways, so my friends dormed about 20-30 minutes away from it, while staying in BK. To save on money, and how bad is a 20 minute bus/subway ride?
  13. LSE, London School of Economics, pretty prestigious. But nothing beats Harvard. Harvard wins hands down.
  14. Double bump this, I applied to University of Oklahoma and Tulsa. What are the average rent and good neighborhoods to live in? I'm coming from NYC and would expect a major decline in food choices but then again, price decline is a good thing.

    New York, NY

I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm an outdoorsy person myself stuck in NYC. When I go on vacations, I avoid cities and go straight for the wilderness. However, NYC doesn't have what you're looking for, precisely. It does have 'hip' biking culture and only professional bikers commute long distances (excess of 5 miles one way) and bike messengers. I know a lot of Williamsburg folks to bike but that is part of their hipster-dom lifestyle, but biking in general is incredibly impractical in NYC. As for rock-climbing, Chelsea and Brooklyn Boulders is your only bet. Most of us NY'ers go upstate near New Paltz for some woodsy action or natural escapes. My friends and I go as far as Vermont for hiking or Maine. It is easy to get away, via car but biking in the city is hectic but once you're out of it, it's a cinch.
  16. I really, REALLY like your descriptions. Ahhhh, the adventures await, alas, I wait for their acceptance first. Hope I live the Wyoming life for 2 years!
  17. I have not, I applied to U of Wyo though, a former grad student there loved it but he needed to move to bigger cities. I, on the other hand, can't stand cities and want to live with nature and experience the college-town life.

Couldn't have said it better myself as a New Yorker, Salud!

Yes, if you live like a student should, just fulfilling necessities and nothing else. But you just have to know the nitty-gritty of your neighborhood to get the best deals as noted above.
  20. All of them said a minimum of 3 letters.
  21. In my proposed field? I mentioned that I can't take petroleum engineering/engineering courses here in NYC because the school is too far. So I'm majoring in Math, so my recommendations will all come from Math professors except the one about my advisor who was my mentor and French Literature professor. Also, thing is, my professors take days/weeks to reply to my emails. When I call their offices, they don't pick up. So I have to assume they mailed their recommendations on time, or else..
  22. Native New Yorker here, Philly wins by a longshot. As per the Chai_latte said, it's a whole city with history, LI is just a residential ....ahhh....uhhhh..island.
  23. I took Cal 1 in high school, AP cal got a 4/5 score. Cal 2 took my first semester of college and like I mentioned before, it was hell since I didn't have the resources and trouble of not studying at home and domestic issues. I took Cal 3 six years later at another college so they took the credit for Cal 2. LIke I mentioned before in my other posts, I was perfectly fine with math until senior year of high school when my life at home negatively affected everything. I was thinking Number theory was pointless too and just take Probability Theory but the timing for that course is horrible and can't take it with my PDE class.
