Can you bottle poutine? JElliott - what are the bigger named schools you speak of? U of T and where else?

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school

Everyone keeps telling me I'll get in everywhere and they all look confused when I get worried about it.... I don't understand it haha, do they not understand?? -
Waiting it Out on Canadian Universities - 2012
laviola replied to NoMoreABD's topic in Waiting it Out
Just checked my mail.. nothing there. -
Probably not.. I'm very private on facebook, and I hate most people on my facebook anyway. I'll definitely tell everyone I love/like in person though, and post it on twitter or wherever. A classmate of mine just posted hers, and I congratulated her, but I thought it was kind of annoying that she did. I sound like a hater in general haha, but I really don't understand people that use facebook to expose every bit of their lives.

If you weren't doing what you are doing, what would you be doing?
laviola replied to LLajax's topic in Waiting it Out
Realistically? Law. If I don't get into my program, the plan is to apply to law.. which isn't any easier. It's harder. But that's life. Dream life: move to LA, make movies. That's still in my plan, I just expect it to take a long time, and for it to be a result of something else rather than the sole focus of my life. -
Same here, that's my top choice and I'm really anxious about it. I really think we won't hear back til at least mid-late March.
-
Im not obsessing over mine but I do think about it from time to time. Like you, I have a TOP choice and the rest are all just back-ups.. and I'm getting scared that I won't get in, even though it's what I want most. I think there may be a big problem in getting too attached to 1 school, but I think if you applied to at least 3 schools, you have a good chance.. at least you would like to hope. Think positively, and yes, prepare for the worst. Maybe prepare for doing a year of working, a year traveling, or what ever you want - that means maybe applying to stuff now in case you don't get in. Then prepare to apply again. Don't give up, and don't think you won't get in, but be ready for anything. Just don't think about it 24/7!

I'm expecting to wait til mid-late March. Two of my applications were due mid January but the rest were due near the end of the month.. so I don't know. I didn't expect to get anything in Feb, but people's posts in here are freaking me out a little! I also know one person who just got accepted to York, which worries me even more because I always thought I was a really good candidate.

Waiting it Out on Canadian Universities - 2012

^ Wow I applied there too, and haven't heard back yet.. I thought I would have by now. I actually completely forgot that the program starts early too. That sucks. It was actually my last choice, but still... if I don't get in there, where will I get in?! :| By the way you guys, don't our letters come pretty late? Like.. March/April/May (even)-ish? We had to apply by february, which is fairly late, so wouldn't it take longer than a month to hear back? -
Going to grad school in Fall '12, need a job now though
laviola replied to peacebyinches's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I'm in the same position as you, and I felt the same about "bad" jobs, but I think the truth is, we don't have much choice right now. You either work anywhere you can or you don't, and being so close to going to grad school, I guess any job will do. -
I hate some of the GPA requirements.. like at U of T. Screw that school in general. I applied to UWO and UBC among a couple others. Those are the two I mainly want to get into. This is for September 2012 though (May 2012 for one of the UWO ones). No idea when I'll find out from them, but the applications are due early January, so I'm hoping to hear by March or April?

I'll be 22 when/if I get in my program (knock on wood)

Waiting it out 2012... 'I've just submitted my application' thread
laviola replied to fenderpete's topic in Waiting it Out
I submitted 4 apps last week, but I have one or two more to go (depending on if I really want to apply there).. I also have options for applying til June next year, so if I don't get offers til then, I'll have to go through the process again.. definitely freaking out now. I just hope I get in somewhere. -
So, I know of at least 2 profs at my first choice MA program that have fields of interests that line up exactly with mine. They're both in slightly different fields but both encompass what I want to do at the MA and hopefully PhD level. How do I contact them about a potential interest, or is that even ok to do? (My field's political science). I didnt even know you could do this until recently so I have NO idea how to word it!

You were applying to undergrad a year after me and you were still in the process of transitioning? Everything of ours was online by then. Now schools are sometimes more into the online apps and others are more into sending them in, and some give you both options. It's really a preference thing. Online apps are really really convenient though. I wish all unis (at least in your country) could just let you upload all your info in one file and have them all review it, like they had us do for undergrad.

For my BA I applied to 2 schools and got into both, with a scholarship in both. My mistake was turning the one with a higher scholarship down for one with more 'prestige' (which is a load of crap, the other school was better for my interests). For my MA I'm definitely applying to several though.

Anyone here know what types of things (in particular) schools look if you're interested in their IR program? I'm not American and I'm probably not going for any American schools, but the Canadian ones I'm looking at are mostly poli sci programs in general, but there is one or two in particular I'd love to get into. One's at UWO and it's the perfect program for me, but without getting into the 'what are my chances?' stuff, I wonder if there are other ways to increase my chances of getting in? Besides academic experience, I have some other international experience but I'm not some crazy keener. Are there little ways, like maybe even contacting profs (although I dunno if this is more a PHD thing), that I can help myself get in or at least raise awareness to the school of my interest in them?
