"every five or so minutes." That's me. Last Friday night, after a few too many tequila shots, I begged a friend to let me use his computer just so I could check the results and my e-mail. I had a small meltdown because of one of the inevitable Friday evening "Duke Application Status" e-mails. There is a good chance I will not even hear from anyone for another month. That makes the chances of my sanity not lasting through the month exponentially higher. Find a math major. Figure that out.

Timshel, I have confidence in you! Honestly, I really want to see all the regular GC'ers on here get into programs this year...I feel so bonded to y'all!

Why wouldn't they send an e-mail notification!? Now I'm logging onto all my online apps to see if I have rejections waiting for me there...

I thankfully took a professor's advice and ended up not doing an undergrad thesis, choosing to do an independent study instead. Luckily, my school's on a trimester system, so I finished my independent study and writing sample (which developed out of it) before apps were due. Such a relief to be taking blow-off classes right now (to the extent that any classes at my school can be considered blow-offs, which is not much of an extent...)

Branwell is basically my hero. My favorite anecdote about him was when he wrote an angsty letter about being a poet to Wordsworth, who never responded. Also, I have a poster of that painting hanging over my bed, nbd. ...I've told friends that the Brontes watch over me while I sleep. In hindsight, that's a little creepy.

I also could always go for a good ol' gin and tonic. Mmmmmm. And tequila. Lots and lots and lots of tequila. Basically, I'll drink anything except whiskey. And beer.

I'm loving this off-topic topic thread. So, I just got invited to submit a paper for a conference at one of the schools I've applied to (the invitation is totally unrelated to my application). The only problem is, the conference is the same day as another conference I've submitted a paper to. Now, this one would be a better experience in terms of institutional "prestige" and because of the nature of the conference itself. I haven't heard back about the other conference, even though I was supposed to by early Jan. So, how long should I wait before I submit to the second conference? The deadline is coming up in the next few weeks, so I have a little time. I just don't know what I should do...blah.

I had made my predicted notification chart (which is hanging above me on my desk) based solely on last year. Ohhhhhhhh, my gosh. Now I have reason to freak out. Chapel Hill was one of the schools I thought I might have had a decent shot at. Now I'm a bundle of insecure nerves. Going to throw up now. Just kidding. Kind of.
