irvinchiva10 got a reaction from Sigaba in Reading suggestions for graduate students in history programs
For what it's worth, during one of my visits I was told not to read anything pertaining to history, but to instead focus on growing in other respects (e.g. practice a new language. travel abroad, etc.) However, since I was so insistent on wanting to read something, I was told I could do either one of two things: (1) figure out which first-semester course will be the most challenging by speaking to other grad students; obtain the course reading list from the appropriate instructor; beging chipping away at it. OR (2) Read a book that reviews the historiography of your field. For Americanists, American History Now by Lisa McGirr and Eric Foner was recommended.

I had no idea there was a thread for the Ford. I applied to it this year. Good luck to everyone!

Wow, I wasn't aware I was only allowed to respond to Psychology threads. Has anyone else noticed that GradCafe has gotten really confrontational lately?

@psychgurl What experience do you have either in the field of history or as a graduate student when it comes to communicating with established professionals? Are you aware of the role private written correspondence has played in the growth of the profession?

I'm not sure...I mean, if every student who exchanged emails with POIs sent them thank you cards, they would be totally swamped. I only said "thank you for the consideration" if I interviewed with the POI. In fact, I feel like I had good email exchanges with some POIs and then got rejected without even an interview. I definitely wouldn't send those profs thank you cards (they probably don't even remember who I am). I think networking at conferences would be a better way to keep in touch with these profs. Just my opinion, though.

Hmm -- if that is truly the case, one can only hope that you are never in such a position. Our field is one in which collegiality is highly valued. To completely disregard how others might feel is certainly far from being tactful.

To anyone who's asked, the NYU History AdComm is meeting TODAY to finalize decisions. Should hear back by the end of the end of the week at the latest.

I'm not sure I agree with this -- there's no harm in making the correction, assuming it's done tactfully and without the expectation that they'll reconsider. Five courses is significant, at my school four history courses gets you a minor and seven is the major! I don't think it's a coincidence or typo that she said three either, knowing that two of your courses were grad seminars and could have been overlooked as a result.

for me it would be:
step 1: write to all the schools that rejected you
step 2: include picture of your posterior
step 3: ask them to send back picture after they've kissed it

Dear History Grad Cafe-ers,
Okay, I'm officially rejected-across-the-board. I got my Stanford reject just a few minutes ago. Now, I'm going to get off here for awhile and finish my last semester of my MA program (plan b exam in may). To those of you who were accepted: congratulations from the bottom of my heart!! For those of us with no acceptances: I'll see you on here again. I am going to be reapplying in the Fall of 2013. I am going to take next year to write some articles, work on getting published, learn more languages and such.
I will be back.
I will get into a doctoral program.
I have reached my goal of applying before I turned 30. Now, I need to reach my goal and finish up this Master's semester. I think I will pick up German next year-- any other recommendations? I have Romanian, Spanish, and a working knowledge (reading) of French. I think German and Hebrew would be good ones next. Or Hungarian...or Russian...hmmm.
For those of you that have been so gracious to PM me- I WILL be returning your letters. Just give me a bit. I am reading 5 books a week and working on two 25 page papers for May. Also- anyone else want to keep in contact? I would love to know real names and emails and even facebooks (or linked ins). Just PM me for details. So, you all have been amazingly supportive and I look forward to lurking this fall and then getting back into the thick of things in Fall 2013.
Again, congratufuckinglations (in a good way!!) to those who got in! You are all-stars, know that for sure.
Love,
A_Finicky_Bean
PS- If you are in the SF Bay area, let me know...I got the tips on getting to Stanford (and I'm in the east bay) and nice residences. Also, I'm presenting a paper at Berkeley in May if any of you are around (oh, awkward going there when I've got rejected...but so is applying to Indiana's language program this summer and working in the Hoover archives at Stanford).
PPS- I am so happy to have been around such a great group of people and I sincerely hope to become "real life" friends with many/most/all of you.

I'll second Safferz. The relationship between a student and an advisor/POI is a professional one and as such necessitates certain formalities. However, if you are comfortable with a more casual relationship with your POI feel free to address them by their first name. I just prefer to keep it formal and respectful, so as to not blur the lines between an advisor and a acquaintance/friend.

My grandma is the most excited -- she lives in northern Somalia, a brilliant woman with no formal schooling so she doesn't recognize the names of any of the schools I've gotten into. But she was ecstatic to hear Obama went to two of them Warms my heart.

Okay, I've been lurking on and off all day BUT it is Valentine's Day and I have spread rose petals on the bed, candles around the room and just made fresh white and milk chocolate covered strawberries. Ribs and twice-baked potatoes for dinner. Add in a good ale from 2008. Then I'm taking my husband hostage.
Rejections? What rejections?....
Hey, I have to pamper my husband...he's the one that let's me do all this crazy grad school stuff and made me promise to try again if I have to! Yay to extremely supportive sig. others!!

First of all, you are conflating many people's opinions about race and your racial attitudes and ascribing them to me.
I think I've mentioned already that I'm not a minority and working to pay for my degree, for which I have no funding, though, it was clear to me long ago, you are not reading these posts, merely ranting.
That's nice. I have a different opinion of what affirmative action is hoping to accomplish, which you'd know if you read my posts. I suppose the only person entitled to have a different opinion is you.
I am speculating based on your comments on this board, that you are probably not the most awesomely supportive person to work with at the university, which I am led to believe by posts such as this one:

Sorry, but creating new threads just to harass me, and continuing to make this a personal dispute leaves me no option but to give you the time out I promised. I'm not sure what playing video games has to do with being a supportive teacher and colleague, but little you have said in this thread is backed by reason -- it's pure opinion.
I maintain that you have a right to that opinion, but you do not have a right to wage a personal war against me on this website. I cannot follow you around, locking or deleting threads that you create for no other purpose than to jerk me around. It's a waste of my time, and it harms this website.
*Edit: I'm locking this thread entirely, since it seems to be a nexus for racial animosity. Since reason seems to go out the window when discussing these topics, I don't think any good will come of keeping this thread alive.
