I'm pretty sure that this is an average for most graduate programs but it's still utter bs. 100 hours per week means that you work atleast 14 hours a day 7 days a week. Such practices were banned and outlawed in most professions some decades ago..

I think most of us have enough passion for our subjects to put in 14 hours 5 days a week and then an additional package during the weekend (in at 6, out at 8.30 is regular to me as a MA) but to assume that one does not need any rest or disconnect is just horrible.

Even if this is the way it is - it's still not an ok practice nor a good deal for either party.

Additionally - "I love my area of study. Truly, I do--and I love my research. But if it came down to a choice between working on research and sitting on the couch with a glass of wine and a good fiction novel, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat. I'm putting in about 70 hours a week right now and don't think I can go on at this pace."

This attitude means that you should quit and do something else..

Spriteling reacted to Dal PhDer in Are A Lot of Grad Students From Privileged Families?
I would disagree with this on some levels : mostly, I am offended that you think my family- who is lower class- and myself would make poor choices because we are poor, or that I am automatically assumed to be privileged because I am where I am. However, I would agree on some level that external circumstances such as household income, neighbourhood SES, and parental education may influence a child's accessibility to higher education. I think generalizing such a statement can lead to mixed messages and ill formed statements.

Hi *wave*, you've met one now!

To the OP, I don't think you can generalize to say "all" or "most" ...there are so many different cases and situations that can lead someone to choosing to pursue higher education. Yes, if we look at the social determinants, income generally will determine what you have access too. Whether this if through monetary accessibility, or through family perspectives/experiences that make it inaccessible...but you can't generalize.

I come from a single parent low income home. I am the first in all my family to pursue any type of education past highschool. My family has never encouraged me or discouraged me in pursuing a degree...I was always taught that you should, above being self-sufficient, achieve in life what makes you happy. My mother wanted to contributed what she could to my tuition, but I wanted to pay for it myself and did. This does not mean that I haven't also been able to travel to Europe (with her), travel across North America, or sacrifice what I want because of money...if I want my sun-dried stuffed olives, dammit, I am going to have them.

I am not trying to stand on a soap box and lecture or get sympathy...but I personally find it insulting that someone would assume I was handed or helped in some way to get where I've gotten. I have worked everyday since I was 16 to make sure I could afford and still afford to do what I love doing. I also work hard to excel at what I do and be able to have the support of funding. To think that I am where I am because of someone other than me, well...I don't like that. Mind you, I won't disagree that some students are handed everything and get where they are because of their family...but that doesn't mean we're all like that.

That's always the refrain isn't it: can't make your point be accepted as fact, just label the person you disagree with a troll and feign ignorance on how the conversation took a nasty tone. Well done. Round and round she goes.

I'd say "Physician, heal thyself. . ." but that's just too obvious I think -

If you say so. This thread has already derailed enough, no way am I taking this flame bait; least of all your ludicrous chicken sandwich ipso facto argument. . .

Thank goodness there are people who can actually do math in this world who dismiss such outlandish comments without actually doing some research first (population the competition is drawing from, historical proportion of men to women in the field of interest - yanno, the pesky stuff).

If it turns out that this is a significant difference, then yes you can dance a jig at the gender bias (something tells me you haven't done that).

Two people find that comment disgusting (and not simply churlish or immature): you (gee I wonder why) and the tightwad it was directed to. Good game.

Sorry, I was merely addressing personal snark with personal snark. Feel free to continue thread combing for posts to Rep-Bomb. It's a hoot.

I'm sorry but that is a load of bullsh*t. Not your demographics - one need only stumble into a computer lab random times during the day to confirm this - but the incredibly faulty connection that "Hey it's full of all dudes. . .definitely has the undercurrent of sexism in it!" - relative or otherwise. This is still academia; unless the OP is going to school in Iran or something gender/racial biases are pretty non-existent.

Jesus. And you're in Social Psychology too. God help us -

As for "insisting" on the department - I was simply curious if the OP would bite. They didn't. Coupled with the previous info, I'm simply leaning more towards "less insidious than a normal person would think - " in terms of the tenor of the conversation the OP heard.

I love the subtle (not so subtle?) dig at the US here.

And I agree with the previous poster - they most likely know. But again depending on where you are studying and what, this maybe shouldn't come as a surprise.

The University of Houston's economics Phd program made me an offer of admission. AFTER I HAD ALREADY MOVED TO HOUSTON AND JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE CLASSES WERE TO START IN FALL 2009 IT REVOKED THE OFFER OF ADMISSION. I COULD NOT START IN FALL 2009 BECAUSE IT REVOKED THE OFFER OF ADMISSION BUT I HAD ALREADY MOVED TO HOUSTON AND PASSED UP OTHER OFFERS.

THE CLAIM WAS THAT THE DEPARTMENT HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THAT I HAD ATTENDED JOHNS HOPKINS ADVANCED STUDIES M.A. IN APPLIED ECONOMICS AS THE DOCTORAL TRACK ECONOMICS PHD COURSES. THE MISTAKE WAS COMPLETELY THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS SINCE I DID NOT MISREPRESENT MYSELF IN THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS. THEY DIDN'T CARE IF THE MISTAKE WAS THEIRS AND THAT I HAD ALREADY MOVED TO HOUSTON.

    Heyooo...

    I'll bite.

You find yourself in a very fortunate position. Kudos! You're one of a very small minority, of this I'm more than sure. By "constantly promote themselves" I'm not implying that a student walk around giving an elevator speech to every individual they come across, or have a portable placard following them everywhere while illustrating their greatness. You would be amiss, however, if you did not think that the individuals competing for the multiple fellowships out there don't have to find a way to set themselves apart from everyone else. Don't take my word for it, though, just look at any fellowship/graduate school application. Letters of recommendation, Statement of Purpose, Personal Statement. What on Earth are these things for? I feel you all are being too literal about this stuff. People have the ability to NOT be a pompous ass, you know? Let's be rational! The 28 virtual pages of posts within this subsection of the forums attests to individuals that are, by hook or by crook, attempting to figure out how best to promote themselves. Do you disagree? The metamorphosis of the forums didn't go through some magical Kafkaesque switch up. Heck, that's why there's a "The Bank" section in the first place, right? People have, likely, been coming here for ages to figure this stuff out. Most don't even sign up! Heck, there are 2 guests reading this post right now! Hence, after 4/15 (when scholarship/admittance deadlines are passed) traffic here drops almost substantially, as everyone goes back to their cave to scheme up a new approach. If you have somehow managed to scrape by without being forced to take stock of your accomplishments, you are a better human than I.

This is what America is all about! For the most part, we are an ultra competitive society and most everyone wants to be the best at what they do. You have to prove that you've got what it takes, though, because nothing comes easy! We are disagreeing on one of the multitude of ways by which an individual goes about getting their accomplishments noticed. NOT on the philosophy behind self-promotion, however. So let me switch up...

We have discussed the point behind placing a highly relevant, important (at least to the person with the award) fellowship after their name within an email signature. It seems I'm in the minority when I say that placing it there is not a faux pas. I disagree that it's pretentious to do so, and really question the motives behind someone who would think along those lines anyway. I see that someone made the argument that it possibly might seem to be self-conscious. Um...tja.

By the way, are any of you NSF fellows? Or have something equivalent to the NSF? I don't, but the debate would have more teeth if any of you did.

P.S.: You seriously stop. Go to your signature. Delete the fact that you're a TA. And THEN send the email? Are you trying to save virtual forests? What in the world does your including that information to an irrelevant e-mail recipient matter!? I'm not getting it!

P.S.S.: I'm most def not getting the entire create a webpage to list your C.V. over simply placing ONE or TWO at MOST important (both to you and academia) Fellowships or scholarships in your signature. Ya'll are on an entirely different level it seems.

This is kind of off topic, but I thought installing something like Lion on my macbook would at least keep me off gradcafe for a solid amount of hours this weekend. Does anyone have any thoughts about whether it's worth the $30? Specifically, I've read complaints about battery life decreasing precipitously and stuff randomly crashing, etc. I'm clearly not a computer person (I'm in history), so I would love any more informed opinions about this. I got my current Macbook Pro in mid 2010 and it's version 10.6.8 I believe, if that matters.

Thank you sooo much tech-literate people!

Seriously? WTF kind of question is this and how is anyone qualified to answer this for you? Seriously, if you're going to make 20+ new posts in one day, you could at least bother to reply to people's questions and comments, rather than just steamrolling on to the next overly broad question that no one hear can answer.

How should anyone know about the veg*n cost of living somewhere? Why do you care? Why would it cost more for veg*ns to live somewhere than it would carnivores?

InquilineKea, have you even thought about how ridiculous some of your questions are? Why do you waste people's time with these inane questions and ridiculous numbers of posts in a day?

Moderators: Is it possible to put someone on a posting freeze, wherein they can't create new topics for X hours/days? Maybe that's what's needed to stop InquilineKea's binge-purge cycle of posting...

Don't give up! Even if you don't get in this year, there's always next year. You never know for sure why you've been rejected; it might just be bad luck that they had too many super awesome applicants like yourself, and they just had to draw metaphorical straws. Or maybe, someone else just had better fitting research interests. Whatever results you get, you are definitely not a failure! The schools are just silly for not seeing just how good you are.
