  1. Did you get to visit? When visiting I kind of got the feeling that you do get your money's worth. I'm not belittling the cost in any way - it's the daunting reason I've yet to commit anywhere. I'm just wondering how others feel about the quality of the program in contrast to cost.
  2. Hi guys! I just want to chime in because I haven't seen anything positive said about HGSE visits yet. I thought HGSE was AMAZING. I had an opportunity to observe a class while I was there and was completely impressed by the students and the level of discussion they had. The Higher Ed program had an open house specifically for our group, which is probably why I left with a positive impression. I liked that the majority of the current cohort made time to meet admitted students, and that the students are who shared the most information. I also found the program director (Judy) and Larry Bacow (next year's president-in-residence) to be great assets to the program. The two of them really are "icing on the cake". Feel free to PM me if you want to know any more about visits. I visited POLS this past weekend too.
  3. I am SO excited to visit HGSE next week!!! I am attempting to pack for Boston and am already realizing that "California attire" doesn't exactly translate into Massachusetts weather. Hmmm.... Really looking forward to meeting fellow Higher Ed Cohort admits!
  4. Thanks - I'm not sure what's going on, although if the University of Washington system is experiencing anything like the UC system, then it likely received a mid-year budget cut that wasn't anticipated. "Due to the very limited faculty resources we will have available for offering quality advising during the upcoming academic year, we have elected to not admit any new Master of Education students into the Higher Education program for 2012." I'm sorry to anyone who was waiting on this program. I do think it is better for them to not admit students than it is for them to admit students and not have the resources available to make it a quality experience for the students.
  5. They aren't admitting any master's students to EDLPS this this year due to funding restrictions. So it's not a real reject, but it's a reject - at least they'll give me my money back for the app fee. Way to kill my streak UW!
  6. ahh that makes sense - thank you for the update!
  7. still waitin'! I can see on the results survey that PHD students for the program I applied to heard back on 03/15 (Higher Ed, Leadership and Policy, masters). Haven't heard a peep tho!
  8. Hi FutureED12 - I do understand your predicament, especially in that I consider myself pragmatic, and yet pursuing a career in education is not that. I think that you should spend some time crunching the numbers and preparing yourself for what HGSE's offer is likely - and unlikely - to contain. It would be wonderful to be offered one of their few fellowships, but the chances are likely that I will at best receive only a need-based grant. I think you should consider whether you're OK borrowing the amount that you would absolutely HAVE to borrow. If I end up at HGSE, I plan to waive health insurance and get an apartment that's close to a subway line with apartment-mates, and leave my car in my parent's garage. When I do the math, there is only a small budget gap between what I can borrow through federally funded loan programs and my projected expenses. I really don't eat that much and based on craigslist apartment listings, there's no reason I need to accept that I should budget $14,900 for 9 months. I plan to really hunker down on my spending between now and August to save enough to cover that budget gap and avoid taking any private loans. This still means borrowing a substantial amount of money, but I'm fairly comfortable with the amounts. It might also help to add up your total cost of attendance at your other option. Does fully funded just mean your tuition will be covered? If so, you still need to budget your actual cost of attendance there. My fully-funded is a 2-year program in LA, so when I add in transportation (parking, gas, insurance) and 2yrs of living expenses, the difference isn't quite so big. Educate yourself as much as possible about what your cost of attendance would be because 60k is not a hard and fast number. And, besides, having a few apartment-mates in and around Boston is potentially an adventure all its own
  9. I'm in the same boat as you - I have a full tuition offer from another campus but HGSE is most attractive to me at a distance. I've never been to Boston or lived out of California, so I'm hoping the campus visits give me the perspective I need to make a decision. Congratulations though - it's a wonderful predicament to be in
  10. I'm hoping their detailed financial application process means they're fully informed of the fact that I need their help in paying for all of the wonderful things they have to offer. ::Sigh:: my heart is telling me Harvard and my pocketbook is begging me to be practical. Revo - how do Stanford v. Harvard fall in your list of preferences?
  11. Hehe - you and me both I just sent them an email and told them it was on its way
  12. I plan to attend the March 22nd (sitting in on a class and attending the living in LA session) and 23rd events. I'm strongly considering USC's MPA program at this point but I really won't be sure until I visit my top choices. Does anyone here know how heavily the students interact with their advisers? I'm not sure that my adviser and I are academically well-matched, but I don't know how much it will matter. If the adviser serves as a "mentor" to help with course selection and/or internship guidance then I'm perfectly happy with the fit. I know this is off the strand topic, so feel free to PM me if you have any insight. Thanks, and I look forward to meeting a few of you in a few short weeks!
  13. Accepted to Higher Ed!! It doesn't look like there are any events scheduled for the Higher Ed Program??
  14. Right! I think that's why I misunderstood the instructions. I subconsciously didn't "believe" they wanted all of my tax docs up front (hey man, that's personal stuff!). My experience has been that schools verify this information after you are admitted and awarded monies. Ah well, looks like my financial aid app held up the decision emails for the all of us.
  15. I never mailed my signed tax return and associated tax documents. I actually received an email from their finaid office over a week ago and just misinterpreted the message. The message also said they would begin review early March and inform applicants if they were missing pieces. I'm sure it's not the end of the world, but I'm eager to know and hope this doesn't delay the process.
  16. I just realized my finaid app is incomplete. Argh.
  17. My POI called yesterday asking if I had received any more information from the Grad Div at Cal (I have not - i was admitted weeks ago but I still haven't received funding info). He hinted that their process is bureaucratic and therefore somewhat inefficient. He also told me that for the program I applied to, they aim for a Master's cohort of 8. Not sure how big SCS is in comparison, but if they're only admitting a handful, then we just might not see their posts on the survey because those 8-14 people aren't on this forum. I hope I'm not being discouraging, I really can't speak of their SCS program size. On one hand, their communication has not been timely, but on the other, I'm sure those in my program, at least, have been notified of their acceptances at this point. Best of luck to those waiting - I hope they get info out to you really soon (and when they do-hopefully they'll have funding info ready at the same time)!!
  18. Woot woot! Congrats FutureEdStudent12!!
  19. Seriously. Is it April 1st or what?! Not cool Hahvahd, not cool.
  20. I'm dying. The 'ctrl' + 'r' keys on my keypad are starting to wear.
  21. Hi yaeliam, I received a full tuition award for USC.
  22. Heard from Stanford POLS today!!!! It sounds like they're making calls once they make decisions and then the emails will come in a few weeks! Holy smokes. Here we go.
  23. Hi there! Congrats on your acceptance! I received my official letter on Th 2/16, and then received the letter from the program with award information on Saturday 2/18. It included award info, instructions for accepting/declining, and your fac advisor. Hang tight, I'm sure it's on its way
  24. Also meant to say - my decision letter is available on the grad application site - it's not in a different location the way UCLA's is. Apparently any recommendations for fellowships for MA students must be prioritized and approved by the grad school.
