I'm sorry to hear this. I would say that family is one of the most important things that we can keep in our lives, and that if you're currently close to your mother and are in the same city, it's going to be a difficult choice. I would ask the question of, Would she do the same thing for you? I've found that Americans have less of a connection to their parents, and that we're a highly individualistic country. It really comes down to what your priorities and values are as a person. As for stress and anxiety, I would recommend seeking a counselor or someone who can help you think through things.

I've talked to previous Fellows and it's better that you overestimate so that you get the highest amount they offer. I talked to Boren and they also said that underestimating your budget or to have a budget under the limit does not increase your chances of receiving the grant and that it's more difficult to increase it later on.

Ah. It's actually for a program for Boren alums that I signed up for, and so it's completely unrelated to this year's competition. I signed up for it months ago and forgot about it until now.

I opened my email to,"Subject: Congratulations on your acceptance" and I was like already??? Thank God! But then reading it further, it continued, "into the Boren Mentorship Program!"

Same for me. Lots of projects and applications due for other courses and fellowships. Still, I'll definitely be counting down until the 21st.

I'm going to wait until I make moves. I won't be going through a study abroad program and won't be studying abroad until August/September, so there should still be plenty of time after the week of April 17th to get things started. I would say it depends on if you're going through a formal process or are leaving in May and the program requires a lot of visas and time to process, otherwise, another couple weeks won't hurt.

HKS is getting a bad reputation on this forum so far. The Kennedy School actually tries its best to connect prospective students with as many external and internal resources as they can [1] [2], but it is the responsibility of the applicant to apply to them concurrently with their programs. It is not fair to say that HKS gives very little funding to their students because it's simply not true.

That's a good question. From the past years it looks like the Fellows and Scholars got notified on the same day.

I have a Plan B brewing at the moment also (which helps take my mind off of thinking exclusively about going to Thailand), but would still highly, highly prefer Boren and if offered both opportunities I would take Boren in a heartbeat.

If you receive the job would you not take the Boren? And security clearances, in my experience, takes maximum about 8-12 months, with most of them being approved 4-8 months after submission and 1-4 months after the interview. Perhaps you'll get something soon.

And it seems like the Fellowship applicants (from the people on this forum) have very different life circumstances than the Scholars have, and that so much of it depends on what else is going on in their life (especially current family and career situations).

What did ACICIS say when you said that you're waiting for Boren results and that your participation is entirely contingent on you getting it? They must be somewhat understanding if they know you're waiting for a prestigious fellowship for funding.

As the day gets closer, I'm getting more and more nervous. I keep on thinking about how amazing it would be to be in Thailand next year. Anybody have the same experience?

That's cool. I meant that for me the Boren would be enough. I'm aware that people can take both CLS and Boren without having them being in conflict.

I don't think I need to double down, I just need to single down and that'll be enough for me. Haha. I'm also applying to other things (not fellowship related) and going abroad in a couple days, so that should take my mind off of things. Hopefully.

And I was also very confused why I had something that said I didn't upload my transcript correctly and that my recommenders didn't upload all of their letters yet. I called and it was a glitch. I better go check it now to make sure that things are in order.

Yeah, I wouldn't freak out just yet if you're applying for the Scholarship. Since your deadline was later it's understandable that they'll send out your budget email a little after ours.
