  1. Hi there! I would love someone to help look over my essays. I'm really dedicated this year, and I need more help from former scholars. Email: bui23353[at]gmail.com
  2. Sorry if I was unclear. The set date is Sept. 30th, but I'm thinking about moving it to late October.
  3. Basic background: applying for the Fulbright, the JET program, and another fellowship that will take me to D.C. next year. In addition, I'll be applying to public health schools (Harvard, JHs, Emory, UNC). GRE Scores so far on practice exams (both last week): Princeton: V69%, Q74% ETS: V70%, Q92% I want to get into the 90th percentiles for both verbal and quantitative in hopes of teaching for Kaplan (and possibly Manhattan if it gets that high) for some side income for... basically the rest of my life (I know, I'm a long-term planner). I've been studying for a couple months now, more intensely these last couple weeks. I was wondering if I should push back my GRE date (Sept. 30th) to study even more intensely to get a competitive score. Pros: Able to teach for Kaplan, gain a more competitive score for graduate school, increased chances of funding. Cons: Very time consuming, may not even increase that much/trying to reach a goal in vain.
  4. Can you help read over my essays? I'll return the favor Email me at bui23353[at]gmail.com
  5. It's been really tough trying to apply for the Fulbright alongside studying for the GRE. I've been splitting my days to focus on work, GRE, and Fulbright. I applied twice through my school and both times it wasn't fruitful, so I'm just going to apply at-large this time around. I'm still in the process of drafting my essays (eek!) AND trying to get recommendation letters (ahh!). I'm super behind!
  6. I'm attempting to go to Thailand for an ETA again. I'm set on learning Thai and working in Southeast Asia, so this is the next logical step on my career path. I hope that Fulbright will see my perseverance--three years is a lot of dedication to a scholarship! What about yourself? What are you going to change this year to make your application successful?
  7. Haha, thanks. I mean definitely. I just started to force myself to brainstorm and flood ideas onto paper, and it's coming together (somewhat). I'm going for a different approach this year. I want to go for humor in my personal statement, then professional and focused on my statement of purpose. Hey, you know what? I have to take risks. I've been going the "safe" route the last two years and it hasn't brought me much success (other than becoming a finalist my first time). So now, I'm going to write in my voice--hopefully it'll come out somewhat panache instead of unrefined and crude, haha. #herestohoping
  8. I feel you! I was on top of my game the first time I applied. I'm just so busy with a full-time job and studying for the GRE that I've found no time to research and prepare my applications. Though if I want this grant I better get started! My school is of absolute zero to no help, so I'll have to do a little bit of leg work to get some advisors and previous Fulbright scholars to help me with my essays. Please Lord, have mercy on us and our tenacious souls!
  9. :\ Not recommended. I can't tell if I'm fast to accept this, or that I'm too shocked to really grasp what this means.
  10. I'm going to have a heart attack!!! Why don't my FPA or Fulbright just tell me the results?!?!
  11. Oh God, I'm the ONLY one in this forum that doesn't know if he's recommended or not yet. The email I used to sign up for Fulbright got deactivated, so now I have to wait until Monday so that my FPA can tell me the news. Please, please be good news. *violently prays to Jesus*
  12. Yes, but I think they only send it out to the primary email unless notified otherwise. I emailed Johnathan, the Fulbright Regional Manager, about the email change but it's probably not changed in the system yet.
  13. The email for my Fulbright application got deactivated, and it's Friday night so my FPA isn't responding! I don't think I can find out until Monday!
  14. I can't handle this anymore. I have to go to bed.
  15. Yeah, there's also a finalist for Thailand at Smith.
  16. With prepping for the Fulbright for four years their resumes and experiences must be amazing anyways. I'm sure they'll be very successful young women even without a Fulbright.
  17. I had a classmate in Shanghai who went to Smith, and she said they train their students since their first year of university for a Fulbright. I can't believe 30/42 students got into the finals. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right.
  18. "Mental health reasons." Lol, I need one of those calls right about now!
  19. Oh. My. God. It's coming.
  20. Who knows?! In the future at least ONE of us will have to be on the commission's board so we get all the inside scoop!
  21. I really liked how a previous poster described this situation. Applying for the Fulbright and waiting is kind of like buying a lottery ticket. You know your odds of winning are all against you, but you still have this sliver of hope that you'll win.
  22. What does that MEAN?! Is it good??? AHHH!
  23. I'm actually in Taipei right now, and it's 2AM. I just... can't bring myself to go to bed since I'm sure I'll just roll around and think about it anyways. So now I'm just watching old episodes of Glee while trying to keep my blood pressure down.
  24. I called my FPA and she says that even if she DID know, she's required to let Fulbright inform me themselves. :\
  25. I almost DIED! The first email in my inbox had a big "Congratulations!" in the subject, but it just turned out to be a congratulatory email for making the Dean's list last semester. AHHH!
