if it's automated, it'll go by last name. or they could be doing rejections first.
-

i'm a beer snob; right now i like the green flash imperial ipa quite a bit, but the dogfish head burton baton has also been awesome. my favorite go-to beer is the bell's two-hearted. -
i applied to the comp lit program at u of c, and for whatever reason, my fee was waived.

thanks, Origin. from what i've seen on this board, your research also sounds fascinating. i hope we both get acceptances! -
i'm a study grant to germany, and i've got reading mastery of my language, good writing ability, and intermediate speaking/listening ability. although my proposed project requires reading more than anything, i devoted some space in my proposal to talking about how i would go about attaining better speaking abilities before arrival.

i'm actually writing my undergrad thesis on benjamin, adorno, and derrida, and the relationship between joyce's work and the negative dialectical projects of the former. in fact, i began my personal statement to upenn with a quote from benjamin's ursprung des deutschen trauerspieles. in general, with respect to literature, i'm interested in genet and proust, the literariness of french theoretical traditions, french hegelianism, etc. in english modernism, i'm interested primarily in joyce, beckett, and pound, revival of the epic form in early 20th century novel, that sort of thing. i know jean michele rabate teaches a classes on joyce, genet, etc. i'm really interested in his work. thanks for the tip on kenny goldsmith, though i can't possibly imagine what a rewriting of a book of quotations would look like. ah! and now i understand: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/harriet/2011/04/rewriting-walter-benjamins-the-arcades-project/ -
hello quick question about the humanities center: is anyone applying this season, and does anyone know if they conduct interviews? the results board shows that someone had a phone interview in january in '10. i have to say, that makes me pretty nervous, considering that it's the 17th. if anyone has any information or previous experience with an application to the humanities center, please share!

dokkeynot, what's your impression of the comp lit department at upenn? i'm interested in british and french modernisms, critical theory (as in frankfurt), and continental philosophy. one of my favorite bros, paul guyer, the eminent kant scholar, recently left the comp lit/phil depts at upenn for brown. i know the department is generally more theory-oriented than the other ivy comp lit programs, which seem to be more traditionally comparatist, but i'd be curious to hear your impressions of the dept. as for internet culture as an academic topic, i actually am pretty interested in marxian takes on new social media. fascinating stuff, especially in light of the arab spring/new anti-piracy bills. -
hello, i've also applied for a DAAD, a study grant to Goethe-Universität in philosophy. i'm also curious about the competition.

man, don't criticize someone for making passive-aggressive comments and then say "cool story, bro." -

i applied this season to the upenn comp lit program. those accepted were notified last year between mid february and mid march; those rejected were notified starting march 1st to the end of march. i just realized that that schedule is unpleasantly unpredictable :-( -
i'm not trying to attack anyone - i haven't singled anyone out. i just think it would be good for this board to be wholly supportive, which i think it more or less really is.

well, if reading this stuff really makes things easier for some of you, have at it. i just don't think that fueling my own terror about my application by participating in a message board pissing contest is going to help me with my application. i think it can be very constructive to discuss our projects and so on, but obsessing about applications that have been submitted and reviewed doesn't seem to be that healthy. of course i've done all of these things; i'm just sayin'.

Interviews....
vordhosbntwin replied to and...and...and...'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
duke's isn't a one-on-one interview, i don't think; it's like a kind of meet-and-greet for all the shortlisted applicants, so essentially, you are competing with the other candidates in front of the faculty. at least that's what current grad students have told me about the lit. dept. -
man this thread is kind of dangerous. i was hoping to just get information about dates and so forth... not the stats of other strong applicants and descriptions of the components of other strong applications, which will inevitably stress everyone out! it seems to me that the applications have already been reviewed and that it doesn't really matter what kind of affiliation you had at this point. i've certainly been guilty of these kinds of contributions myself, but i can't say that they're very constructive at all - knowing -or at least being led to suspect- that person X has an affiliation/recommendation/statement of purpose that trumps person Y's isn't really going to make this wait any easier, and it certainly isn't going to in some way enhance either application. sorry! i guess it's time for me to use google's stayfocused to block gradcafe for a while!
