ah yeah. well, i know the dude probably gets tons of annoying emails from folks like me. i sent him an apology and a 'thank you' for the swift rejection. it's kind of unbelievable that these programs already know who they're rejecting yet refuse to notify applicants until march. i'm glad i found out this soon, honestly. -

lol yeah, i don't know. i hate to think that i was rejected because i annoyed this guy. i'm currently writing an article and pheng cheah is one of my sources, so it feels a bit strange. oh well fuck it. here's the full note: "As I told you last week, all applicants will receive final notification by early March. I can now add in advance that we had many strong candidates and a very small number of place and we regret that you were not offered admission. I wish you all the best for your plans for graduate studies." -

duke faculty are generally very helpful. i suggest contacting the DGS if you would like concrete information about dates, your status, etc. -

i would email pheng cheah - i emailed him originally, and he told me that march would be when i'd find out. stupidly, a few days later i emailed the head of the department, dr. constable, who forwarded my email to cheah and someone else :-(. having applied to fifteen programs, i frankly forgot that i'd already emailed someone at berkeley. thus cheah responded, was somewhat disgruntled, and promptly rejected me in his reply! -

for what it's worth, i just received a rejection from berkeley's rhetoric program. i think i annoyed the DGS by accidentally sending him the same email twice, after he'd already responded to it the first time. but what can you do? it wasn't a top choice, nor was it in my top 5, but i nevertheless would have been thrilled by an acceptance. best of luck to other UCB rhetoric applicants -

interview chat/despair place

I've spent a bit of time at Duke this past semester, and from what I've gathered from conversations with current grad students, there will be a one-on-one interview at one point in the weekend. However, I'm also under the impression that the weekend isn't too strenuous and therefore shouldn't the cause of too much anxiety. After all, we've already made it through the most difficult part of the application process (for Duke, that is). Let me know what they tell you after you send the email. I'm also very curious how many people they invited this year...I guess we'll see. -

I think this is pretty wrong. Look, for instance, at 2011, when several successful applicants were notified by email and website. In 2010, it would seem that every accepted applicant, at least on grad cafe, was notified via the website. The Brown app was due on Jan. 2nd, and most adcoms do several rounds of application review. It might also be worth something that the first acceptance was an international student, who in general seem to be notified first. This was the case for Duke, at least. I just wouldn't be so defeatist. Also, if you look at past records, the acceptances have in some cases been staggered. Idk, man. Don't think you're despair is necessary. -

from brown: Thank you for your inquiry. Admissions decisions will be sent, by the Graduate School, early next week. With best wishes, Esther Whitfield. -
hi folks, so i've somehow managed to receive two interview invitations, one from duke and the other from johns hopkins humanities center. the former is an interview weekend, and the latter is a skype interview; i'm nervous as hell about both, for johns hopkins and duke are my 1st and 2nd choices, respectively. so i suppose i have two questions: (1) has anyone interviewed with either school in the past, and if so, is there any specific advice you can offer? (2) can someone offer some general advice about these kinds of interviews? for what it's worth, i've applied to duke's literature program, and to the comparative literature track at the humanities center. i'm an undergraduate, in my final semester, working on my thesis, etc. perhaps this can be a place to talk about interview stuff in general; i imagine many us have received interview invitations, or will in the near future.

i think it's doubtful. maybe a march waitlist notification, at best. what a terrible 'at best'.

chicago acceptances are probably done, i would imagine. it doesn't look like they've admitted anyone after february 2nd in a couple years. i'm going to go ahead and call it a loss. -

for what it's worth, in the interview invitation, they wanted interviewees to let them know by wednesday morning whether they'd be coming. acceptances won't be made until around march 1st i don't think, but historically, i think that only those who have gone to interview weekend have been accepted. -
