vordhosbntwin replied to cquin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Emailed the program and just received a response: We have not finalized our list of applicants to invite to campus. We are planning to do so soon and notify students within the next week or so. All the best, Tiwonda good luck to every1 -

yo, duke lit applicants, has anyone heard from the program about interviews yet? if i haven't heard anything by the end of the weekend, i'm likely going to email the department. -
do germany full grants, or for full grants in general, do we need to send more than one copy of each transcript?
-
ah thank you. what a terrible wait. i imagine that i'll have made some other decisions (hopefully, if i have some to make) by that time.
-
i can send you my proposal if you want to read it. just PM me. i have a letter of affiliation with the goethe-universität, and i did outline a specific project and give reasons as to why i need to be at that specific place.

dokkeynot, what did you do during your time off? -
duke's lit program has an interview weekend, but i don't think it's one-on-one. however, i'm not sure that the english literature program has anything.

Any good conferences coming up?
vordhosbntwin replied to Grunty DaGnome's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
i'll be giving papers at "(an) aesthetics of absence" comp. lit conference at the university of toronto and the derrida konferenz at goethe universität in frankfurt, both in march. i'm very excited, j. hillis miller is the keynote for the former, jean-luc nancy for the latter. anyone going to either? if so, let's have some brews -
really? i think that it's pretty obvious that i didn't get the fulbright, and that anyone who spends 5 minutes on this board/has any knowledge of the fulbright process would understand that my saying "got the fulbright" would be a kind of shorthand for making the first round (you yourself used similar language to indicate that you didn't make the first round, although i suppose that really does mean you didn't get the fulbright). also, i know that i can't hold two grants for the same project, or a fulbright and a daad at the same time. i didn't ask you about that, but i guess thanks?
-
does anyone know when we're supposed to hear about DAAD? March?
-
yeah, i watched someone deleting things for a second. someone should put a lock on it

I'm assuming the translation stuff is only for ETA; I've never heard about it for Full Grant. Any ideas on that, anyone?

Critical Theory Reading List
vordhosbntwin replied to karablythe's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
do some history of philosophy (descartes, spinoza, leibniz, berkeley, hume, kant, etc). i hear derrida from literary folks all the time, but only to find that they haven't read most of the things he's writing about. OG seems like a pointless read at best if you haven't spent some time with heidegger, saussure, levi strauss, and rousseau (or at least with one of them; i feel that a good understanding of derrida requires some knowledge of the kind of discourse within which he's attempting to work.) also, there's some far more 'literary' derrida out there that's more interesting than the usual stuff, e.g. Glas or The Truth in Painting. sorry if i seem like i'm attacking the derrida recommendations above - OG is great, just overplayed, and probably overplayed for the wrong reasons. if anything is indicative of the 'reification of deconstruction', it's the preponderance of that book on the shelves of lit folks. -
did get the fulbright, but still hoping i get the DAAD.

can someone give me some info on stats for Germany full grant finalists? any clue what the odds usually are?
-
