  1. i've written a short summary of the event, and i'll message it to each of you. i've PM'd a few; i'd be glad to PM others. i would like to add one thing: i do not do cultural studies, i am not at all a cutting-edge literary theory person; i do work in philosophy, modernism, and other canonical literary traditions. i'm not conservative necessarily, but i don't really give a shit about trendy theory, which doesn't make me the best candidate for duke. there are people at duke whose interests really align with my own, but unfortunately, these people are not easy to work with, to approach, or to really have much interaction with at all. there are good reasons to go to duke. but there are certainly better programs. to illustrate this a bit, let me say that the literature department seemed to be very opposed to comparative literature depts in general. i will likely choose to go to yale complit, which is precisely the kind of program duke seems to despise, so perhaps that's why i'm not a good fit.
  2. just got back from the interview; i left before the final dinner because i was ready to get out of there. the program is definitely not for me, but there were attractive elements, and if any of the international folks who couldn't make the weekend want impressions from someone who visited, feel free to ask me. i think i need a more 'traditional' program, so i'm gonna do yale comp lit.
  3. i received the acceptance with no interview also, from whom did you hear that harvard would announce admissions decisions tomorrow? is that for english, i assume? the dgs for princeton comp lit told me that it would be the first week of march.
  4. in at johns hopkins humanities center. not sure what to do....
  5. is it safe to assume that Cornell will only be sending out rejections from this point forward?
  6. no one's been accepted yet; they're just rejecting the folks who didn't pass last week's interview.
  7. anyone want to claim that hopkins rejection?
  8. haha thank you! but i meant that i was rejected... :-(
  9. that was mine - got it directly from copeland. i should probably add - it said they accepted 4 out of 106. so i'm assuming if you haven't heard, you're out.
  10. i received better offers for my particular interests (yale comp lit and johns hopkins humanities center), and perhaps an offer with better funding (yale's is quite good), though i'm not sure what duke's funding is.
  11. so it seems that duke is accepting 6 this year, out of the 15 invited to the interview. i'm almost certain that i won't be attending duke, so i suppose that now that's 14....
  12. i had my interview at hopkins on thursday - has anyone else had an interview there yet? or heard anything? i look forward to meeting folks at duke this week, but i'm almost positive i won't be attending the school at this point.
  13. i'm not sure if you're saying that i expect the faculty to like theory, or if one in general would expect yale's faculty to like theory. as i said in my original post, it would likely come down to yale versus a more theoretical program. regardless, i'm not very interested in literary theory as such, but i am interested in 19th and 20th century philosophy and its relationship to aesthetics. if the program isn't interested in philosophy either, that would be strange, considering that my application revolved around my interest in it. does your friend just do poetry and american lit? that seems more like english department territory, but perhaps there is more to your friend's interests. i think you deleted your original post - why? the information seemed fine, i was just trying to get further clarification.
  14. thank you very much! i wanted to ask folks on this board what they think of yale's comp. lit. program, what they think of its emphases, etc. i have a feeling that it may be between yale and a more theoretical program (johns hopkins humanities center, for instance) for me, and i'm just not sure what the hell i'll do in that situation.
  15. here's what i received in an email exchange: "Our committee should be meeting during the next week, and we will draw up a list of successful applicants at that point. We will contact successful applicants at that point. yours sincerely, Rita Copeland" that was sent on feb 1st, so idk.......
  16. same; i was at duke this past semester, have lived nearby my whole life for that matter. and i took a class at the u of c - i never felt unsafe.
  17. just like hyde park (chicago), new haven (yale), and many other schools!
  18. i've posted this elsewhere, but i'm too dang excited to keep it in: was admitted to yale's comp lit program this evening! the best moment of my life.
  19. just got into yale! signing off from grad cafe for a while, but the best of luck to everyone on here!
  20. holy fuck, i just got into yale comp lit, this is a dream come true.
  21. just rejected from brown. good luck to everyone else!
