  1. Don't worry about GRE scores. I think I got 160 and got accepted into most of the schools you mentioned. I am also an international student
  2. I got 161 in math (general GRE) but I am still going to MIT. GRE is not important ... just forget about it. Focus on better presenting your research and other related things.
  3. in that case don't apply to CS schools. If you are interested in AI, you can take the neuroscience-AI route and enroll in the appropriate programs. For eg. Caltech's CNS program, MITs BCS program or NYUs CNS program. However, even for these programs, you will need exceptional quantitative and programming skills. However, formal CS courses may not be as much of a hard requirement as in the case of CS schools - research and self-taught skills (in form of projects) could be okay. AS far as top schools are concerned, it's all about research potential and there are numerous ways of showing that.
  4. find some job at an industrial R&D lab. I had a great experience working in one and now heading back to school in sep. My interests evolved as I was working and the process helped me figure out the type of problems that intrigue me the most.
  5. Well, traditional neural nets are not the best performing but it is very much an (re)emerging field. Majority of work is in deep learning and cortical models such as hmax. I would take a deep learning course as an advanced elective if it's offered.
  6. I have to disagree with people advising against industry. I started in a systems team at a big company, moved over to a team that does vision/AI (R&D division) and now going to MIT for a PhD this coming fall. I would say majority of my notable work was in the industry. Moreover, I don't think I would have gotten in without my industry experience. So if I were you, I would also look for good engineering positions within industrial research divisions.
  7. If you know what you want to do, I would highly advise you to contact professors. However, don't send them generic emails. Be specific, read their papers and most importantly ask intelligent questions (try to think of new ideas with regards to those papers).
  8. Unfortunately, a lot of good international students suffer due to lack of LORs from known researchers. My advice would be to apply to a bunch of MS programs as well. Do not look merely at rankings. There are a lot of great profs in lesser known schools.
  9. Different people have different strategies. For all my applications, I was precise on what I wanted to do. Treat the SOP like a mini-research proposal. The most important thing would be your LORs, statement and research exp. Everything else is secondary.
  10. someone is going to get off the waitlist. I just accepted my MIT BCS offer instead. good luck!

    MIT

I was planning to stay in the dorms for 6 months and then off campus. Is this possible?
  12. yes I was interviewed. groups I applied to: info ecology, fluid
  13. just got in! the reply will be via email.
  14. GREs are grossly overrated. I got slightly lower than you in Q (V was same as Q) and got interviews/admits in top 5 engineering/science schools. What counts is research and LORs for PhD. If I were you, I wouldn't care about giving the GRE again. Instead, focus on doing more research in the mean time.
  15. I heard back from a PI yesterday. Will have a phone interview soon.
  16. I saw your general profile stats and i am sure you will do great. As far as research interests and SOP are concerned, my email is - tejasdkulkarni@gmail.com. Lets discuss things offline.
  17. My score range is between 1400-1500. Not as great as yours. LOR - i think all will strongly recommend me. Got 2 from school and 1 from work. As far as SOP goes, what is your strategy? How deep are you going into your past research experience?
  18. If brain/AI is interesting then go for computational neuroscience. I work at a research lab in a big company and a lot of PhDs are hired based on their papers/dissertations. Our group has always been interested in people from CS,Neuroscience, EE. Again, it totally depends on your adviser/research topic.
  19. Thanks habanero. I am only applying to very specific programs (3-4 schools). I am hoping for a positive outcome but if not then I will strengthen my application and reapply. Your list of schools is quite thorough. Good luck with your applications!
  20. Applying to top CS programs (PhD). Here's my online portfolio - www.tejask.com What are my chances?
  21. I checked UC Berkeley's requirements. Only GRE general test is required
